 INTRODUCTION

IT is iiitendea by the oxUibitioii oUlie Pictinv
noH- brtbio the Public, to represent the interior of the-
House of Lords, us it appeared at a period when it pro-
bably contained a greater number of the ilhistrious
personages who are members of that House, tlian can
liave been seen hi it on any other occasion, the subiect
of the Picture having been of the most serious and
deli. ate eousequence to tlie welfare of the Nation, as it

;aN no les. than an examination and investigation, by
,he Peers of this Realm, to enable them to dedilo
whether or not, there were sufficient grounds for passing
a Hill of Pains and Penalties, against the Queen Consort

 of their Sovereign.

 INTROmc TION.

To ivprcsiMit a subject of so tlivorse aiul ditlicult a
nature, as the one here to be treated, would iietessarily
demand tiie utmost exertion of anv Artist who \v(ndtl
venture to ex])ose liis work to liis eoteniporaries, or hope
that posterity should sec it; yet it may be noticed thai
it possessetl more disadvantages for a Painter than most
other sui))eets. Among the greatest dillieulties here to
be contended with, were tlie necessity of adhering strictly
to the form of a building, in most respects calculated to
destroy the etlect a painter is desirous o[' obtaining on
the groups with which hi* has to compose his picture ; the
Benches on which the Peers are seated in the Cialleries,
and on either side of the House under them, making ten
parallel lines retiring from the eye, betwci-n which are
live cross benches, forming right angles in the ciMitre of
the Picture : the table at which the Right Honourable the
Lord Chancellor, supreme Judge of the Imperial Parlia-
ment, sits, is sunk into a sort of well, in the floor, and the
woolsacks are so placed, that their Lordshi|)s, ihe
 learned Judges, sitting on them, were scarcely to be seen;
it is true that the formation of tlie Galleries may have
answered perfectly the purpose intended, but sixteen brass
rods, supporting two naked cornices, surmounted by a
fence, constructed to render them secure for those Pe«'rs

INTRODUCTION. V

who c'lioso this more uiry part oftlii' House, maybe easily
imagined to have offered unfavorable inareriais, ujk)!!
whieh the Artist was obliged to eompose his Picture,
instead of si)leiidid architecture, and draperies so arrani^e«i.
as might have induced any man to pauit it : there were
six tlifferent lights also to contend with, entering from
six opposing windows, which rendered it almost impos-
sible for a painter who did not, by partial or political
feeling, determine to sacrifice one or the other side of his
picture to shadow, to produce any strong effect in chiar

 oscuro.

To show therefore, tairly and distinctly, the portraits
of so many Noblemen as it was necessary to introduce,
imder the transition of light from right to left, was a
dilfu'ulty scarcely to be overcome. The monotony of
colour imposed by the furniture of the House, with tlie
blue and black of modern costmne, Avould have apolo-
gized for any want of s|)lendour in the treatment of so
grand an historical subject ; nor were the gowns and grey
wigs of the learned Gentlemen of the Bar, the richest
combination (m point of colour) to be desired for the
foreground of a picture where great depth was an essential
 cpudity.

But the painter humbly hopes that his arduous endca-

the N'obili^' and Genti7 introdneed in the pieture, and
partieularly from the Honourable George Ai,'ar Ellis, l)y
whom lu* was employed to paint it — and whose zeal<Mis
anxiety for its advaneement and sueees^, enabled him to
overcome the almost insurmountable dillieulties of obtain-
ing the favor of sittings, from so many p<^rsons of the
highest rank, will render it a worthy objeet (^f curiosity
 and public interest.

 The picture contains upwards of thiee hundred tigures ;
the total number of persons of the lirst consideration in
this country, who have done Mi*. George Hayt*M- the
honor to sit for their portraits in it, is no less than one
hundred and sixty one ; and there are introduced from
various engravings of ackno\vledged veracity, the por-
traits of twenty eight gentlemen, whose situations in
the composition made it mniecessary to trouble them
to sit ; which amount, altogedier, to one hundred and
eighty nine portraits ; which are believed to be more
than have been introduced into any picture nf acknow-
 ledged celebrity.
