Tlio blessing of Almighty God, which has been continued llo this Society during the year that has passed, calls, first jnf Jill, for devout thankfulness. Turning to the accounts lof the Treasurer, closed on the 1 st of May, it will be seen Itliat the payment of the contributions reported at the last Imecting, exceeded by a large amount, any heretofore made, lit will also be observed, that after a somewhat larger ex- Ipeiulituro than usual for the various objects of the Society, Itlic Loan Committee has been enabled to add the sum of |j.'r)00 to the vested funds, including however, the sum of £120 paid in on one of the securities. The Treasurer's accounts have been arranged in the I'loarest and most satisfactory manner that could be devised, bVny one now, at all interested in the welfare of the Society, ean readily investigate its receipts and expenditure. This Knvestigation, both with regard to its finances, and also all ]its objects and operations, is especially iiivited. By this [means, the Society must, ere long, secure the cordial and the constant support of every thoughtful member of the ninirch. It cannot be disputed but that the objects of the Society are such as every Churchman should endeavour Uy rarry out, while by its liberal constitution any one of the Wiembers of the Society has the yearly opportunity of ex- )|»rossing his opinions, acting upon his own judgment, and jf suggesting any improvements or changes that may !)♦ fhought desirable. It will bo seen by the Report from one of the Local Com- |nittees, that the Society has received two legacies during llic past year. The amount indeed is small, but the fact is |)f great interest and importance.* It shows that tho Society Is gradually gaining its true position. 'J^hat its holy pur- poses are beginning to be solemnly considered, at the time ivhen the account of his stewardship, which each must give. Is about to bo called for. This is a matter which sliould Ivoigh deeply on tho mind of every Churchman wlicn about To make a last disposition of that substance with which ho iia.s for a while been entrusted. Street writes that thcgciura, depression in the biisint'ss of this County has slightly ciltctecl the coiitri- but'ons, which arc £20 litn. lie is yet hnppy to report a growing intcraq in the welfare of he Society among his people. With reference to the Church at the Grand Falls, Mr. Street writes a- follows : — •• I wish much to call the attention of the Society to the Church at theGraiK; Falls, which stills remains in an unKnishcd state. This Church has bcei removed, at a considerable expense, to a more convenient situation. It )w> also been well floored and countcr-plaistered, so that ^ve can use it duriiir the summer. But unless there is something further done, we shall be com- pelled to leave it during the winter, which I trust torv not bo the case, a« the holding of divine service in different places. Is not only an inconvc • dience, but a serious drawback to the Church. The members of the Churcii at the Falls are few and unable to do a great deal. 1 earnestly hope there- fore the Society will consider the necessity of the case, and make a gran' to assist us in the work." Batkvbst, &c. — Rev. C. F. Street writes as follows : " The annual i-M tistical return and report of Missionary operations concerning the Ilnthi«>t Mission, which I now send, I trust will show to the Society that the Churc', in which it is so deeply interested, is progressing here as it is elsewhii:, •• Both the Restigouche and Gloucester Missions have received ray min- istrations during the year. I have visited them both so often as my variou- .stations and numerous calls would permit. The Kestigouche Mission b- been visited five times during the year, and these visits required me t^ travel eighty miles above Bathurst, and preach in seven different stations. •' The whole of the Gloucester Alission has been visited four tim.es, nud these visits obliged me to travel eighty or ninety miles below Bathurst, anJ officiate in six stations. •• All thoso to whom my services were acceptable, are so separated, tV. one from the other, or arc so divided into little settlements, that the vi<:t ing them occupies much time and labour. There are two or three famiiits in one place, and three or four in another part, and these few familii- gathered together sometimes constitute ray congregation in remote place> •« The Islands of Miscoc and Shippegan deeply interest me, not on accou).'. of the number residing there, but on account of their exclusion from the religious advantages and privileges which many have on the mainland. I Dnly find eight families who are I'rotestants on these Islands, and tlirv most gladly receive my ministrations, especially as no otheV ministratioi:> are afforded to them, and great exertions are required in order to visit thciii. " I find great advantage in understanding the French language, beiii. able to read it correctly and gradvftilly acquiring fluency in speaking it, a- two or three French families, although Koman Catholics, requested mc ti' other day to hold divine service for them. Although this was but a sniaii beginning, and apparenily an unimportant circumstance, yet we know lu' but by the blessing of God, and by perseverance on the part of the Mission ary, this might finally lead us to great things, so far as the French are con- cerned in this County. "The omount of the contributions to be sent from this Mission, I canno; yet inform you, ns my numerous ministerial duties have delayed me in the collecting for the Diocesan Church Society. I will forward yo\i soon, a li^-' of subscribers, and will send the money to the Treasurer. The Missioi., although very extensive, is yet very poor. I wish much the Society woulil affordB separate grant for books for Shippegan, on mainland, and Shippeusii and Miscoe Islands." He writes as follows ; " Tl\e extreme Ijoisterousness of the weather, during a preat part of the past winter, inter - B'cred with ray duty ; from the drifts and storms, I frequently found it im- possible to reach the place of service until a long time after the appointed time was passed, travelling mostly on foot. The number of t-ervices is therefore not so large as it would otherwise have been." Campobei/lo. — Rev. J. S. Williams reports that at the annual meeting of [the Local Committee the following resolutions were unanimously agreed to. 1. The Committee desires to record, with expressions of regret and sym- j)?.tliy for his bereaved family, the death of an old and constant supporter of ihe Society, whose name will be found ou this year's eubscription list, Tupt. A Day School has been established on the Island of Camjiobello in ^rhich Church principles arc taught, and which is now attended by forty- even scholars. (2). In the contributions forwarded to the Society from this Mission St year, the sum of £10 was appropriated by the Local Committei tt^' )bjcct 3 ; and that a like sum is this year limited to tiie same object, so far y ii is in the power of the Local Committee to do so. The Committee considers that these facts constitute a claim on tlio Sr.ci- Ity for some assistance to the above mentioned School; and oarnustly rc- luests the attentive consideration of the General Committee to a mattt r c( luch grave importance, not only to this particular Mission, but to tho phtirch and Province generally. The contributions amount to £18 Ids. 10.^d. CAUiiniDOE, — Rev. A. Wood reports £3 7s. The contributions amount to £28 9s. 3d. IDouGiiAS. — Kev. C. S. Medley has forwarded the following report froa| Jiis Mission : — "Having had the charge of this Mission for eight months only, it is dit cult to say much with regard to the progress of our Church in it. At 'IV Creek, however, where a neat little Church was consecrated, in Augn-' 1SG0, I observe a rapidly increasing interest in the services of the Churci [ regret that OAving to the great depth of snow during the last winter, I wt jirPTcnted from visiting this part of the Mission for two months. A Sm: (lay-School has been established there, and many of the parents as well 'x their children have shewn much interest in the good work. The books the Society arc fully appreciated by the settlers. i "An uicreasing congregation is regular in attendance at Divine Servict wliich I have held at a small School-House at the Cross Roads, neartfe Mactwaquack Stream, once a month. The people are very anxious to buik a Church, and to have Sunday Services ; and though few in number, thei have contributed liberally towards the building, the foundation of whic: has just been begun. It is respectfully hoped that some support will K granted from the Diocesan Church Society for this object. The number' i.'ommunicants appears to have decreased since the last Report of the lii: Missionary. This, I think, is chiefly caused by the death of some oktel incmbers of the Church, and the removal of others from this Parieh. It ij 110 small satisfaction to know that out of sixty-six, there are only ten wh | arc not regular in presenting themselves at the Lord's Table once in eaci month. I trust that shortly, with God's blessi'ig, this little band will \< increased by some of those who were confirmed by the Bishop iu Aiigu'l^ last. " My adult baptisms have only numbered two, although I fear thertsti too many who have neglected the commandment of Christ. These wc both young persons, who were in the last stage of consumption, btl'orei heard of their sickness. The earnestness of one, a young woman, 1 m particularly impressed with. Although she lived quite in the back- wood' iit the extremity of all settlements, and therefore, I should presume, b: little opportunity of gaining much religious knowledge or instructiou ; ' my first visit to her she firmly confessed (as far as her weakness of \w' would permit) her belief in Christ crucified, risen and ascended ; «■ though desirous of being baptized, wished the time to be postponed, uni I had spoken to her about baptism, and instructed her in the impurtaif duties attending it. I am thankful to say I was enabled to administer tr. holy Sacrament to her a few days before her death, in which ahe njoicrj with heartfelt joy. This I mention only as an instance of that encouris ment which the Missionary receives in the most arduous part of his la' and as a proof of the blessing which God mercifully grants to him as:: servant of Jesus Christ." ^ , _ The contributions amount to £24 Gs. 6d. - Fredebicton. — Rev. He regrets t!j several causes, among which he may mention his late illness, have pif vented the completion of the subscription list before this Annivcr*| Meeting, ir. Uaokiown. — Uev. J. Nealcs has inclosed a subscription list whicli, to- fcether with the collections in Church, amounts to £23 4b. i)d. Glunei.o, Newcastlb, &c. — Uev. J. Hudson reports that the Annual Mtcting of this Uommittce was held on the 27th May, when a resolution hv!is passed expressive of the Committee's good will towards the great ob- |ut of the Diocesan Church Society. Mr. Iludsou adds, that he has not been able to complof^ the collections til his Mission, chiefly owing to ill health, and the destruction of two largi; iriJsc'S, which occurred during the tremendous gale of the 6th of October bll^t, which has rendered the flock of the field of (jlenelg rather difficult of trccss. He now transmits £10, and hopes shortly to send nearly as much bnore, if tlie Church people in his district will be prevailed wpqii to do their duly. Grand Manak. — Rev. G. T. Carey has inclosed £5 as tlie contributions Ifrom this Parish. Hampton. — Rev. W. Walker reports subscriptions and cjllections to the ji.mouut of £24 to the funds of the Society. Harvet, IIopevtell, Alma, &c. — Rev. H. B. Nichols reports the aipcunt [if contributions to be £9 lis. Od. The people of Alma uud New Ireland Mnahle to give only a small sum for the support of their clergyman, are not tailed upon to contribute to the Diocesan Church Society. " I have attended," Mr. Nichols writes, " regularly to my accustomed |(iuties since my last report, with the exception of omitting the service in ifevv Ireland, owing to the excessive snow storms in that quarter last win-., icr. I have held service at Hopewell every Sunday but one during the Rvinter months, when I omitted one Sunday, and held the service that day in a different place in the Parish of Alma, twenty or twenty-five miles dis- put. I have held service also at Alma once a month. New Ireland, distant ten miles, once a month, Harvey, distant seven miles, once a fortnight. I i now hold services at Hillsboro' once a month, distant fifteen miles. >' 1 have enjoyed much satisfaction fron; having a Church at Hopewell. ^'he congregations at Hillsboro', when we have service in the Temperance lall, are quite large. I think there is good ground for encouragement rith regard to this Mission, considering the small number in it who be- long to our branch of the Church of Christ." In a subsequent letter Mr. Nichols writes, that the Bishop had visited Ihe Mission, and consecrated the Church at Hopewell. Five were con- nrmed at the same place, one at New Ireland, and seven at Salmon River, besides one sick person in Hopewell, and one in Harvey, who were both pnptizcd and confirmed. KiNoscLBAB. — Rev. :i-?s.6d. J. Black reports contributions to the amount of Ki.NGSTON.— Rev. W. E. Scovil writes as follows :— '« I regret that I do hut feci well enough to take part in our Society's Meetings this week : the txperience of the past winter warning me that a bad cough, such as I now have, may by a little neglect make a lengthened ces, sation from parochial jiutins unavoidable. The lay delegates, Justus S. Wetmore and Samuel t'ostcr, Esquires, will, I believe, both be in attendance. The contributions I'l the general purposes of the Society which I have forwarded to the Trea- lurrr from Kingston for the past year are $121. I shall have shortly to ^raw the £5 granted for a Catcchist at Long -Island, and if the state of the unds will admit, 1 hope the grant will be continued another year. The ptop' if Wickham, where he is employed, have, as you are aware, no re- lident lergyman, and their Church is therefore seldom or never opened for Bivih., service on the Lord's day. I have endeavoured for two or three rears past to supply as well as may be the deficiency, by officiating there fwe a month on a week day ; and the Rev. Mr. Neales has likewise given In several occasions the benefit of a Mi8.«ionary visit, and by these gratui- jf^us labours helped to keep alive some regard for the Church in thai long 3b ■ 16 neglected parish. The Catcchist has this Inst year assembled every Sundr. at the t'hurch a considerable number of cliild'ren, and nasistcd by some c his neighbours, has taught tho Catechism with other elementary religioii I exercises. Lancasteb.— Rev. W. S. Covert reports that the contributions from tlii. Parish arc not large, but the local expenses this year are greater than usuu! The Society may expect half as much more next year. The amount i- £22 16s. Od. MoNCTON.— Rev. W. N. Boyer reports £7 ISs. IJd, as the contributions from this Mission. New Mautland. — Rev. John Bacon Medley writes as follows :— <• Oi September 30th, 1860, the Bishop went out with the Rev. Charles Medio; and myself to the Maryland Church, and confirmed twenty persons, but 1 1 am sorry to say not one of them has as yet communicated. This is to hi ' Hocounted for, in soipe degree, by many of them being away during thf I lumbering season, and they have not returned home as yet. There I -were one hundred and three persons at the service on that day, in fact too \ many for the Church to hold, and the burial ground was also consecrated : then. " On four Sundays, in January and February, I was prevented by tht vory deep snow from reaching the Church, having on each occasion to turn liack, and on three other Sundays was prevented by illness. On one of those Sundays, February 24th, the Rev. Mr. Rodgers, now Curate of Woodstock, ; undertook the duty for me, but was unable to reach the Church in time on = account of the depth of snow. •< A Collection has been established at Maryland on every Sunday, andi devoted to Church purposes. This has not only paid for a new fence put | round the Church yard last fall, but there is now a considerable balance on s liand. { «.I held a Missionary Lecture in the Church at Maryland after servic; one day in the week last fall, for the purpose of shewing the people the rea sun why the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in England is with- drawing giants to New Brunswick, and the need for every small Parish | OTcrtlug itself, and also to give some account of tho different Christian | Missions throughout the world. Unhappily on account of other 8ervicc^ going on at the time, the attendance was small, but I hope soon to M.il another meeting of the same description, which promises to be much better J attended." Contributions amount to £7 lis. Sd. PniNCB William, Dumpkies, &c. — Rev. Philip Wood Loosemore hn-j inclosed returns showing tho amount of contributions to be £25 Ss. 3d.| lie also writes as follows :— " Wc forward to the Society this year an an^ount equal to that for th past year. The only circumstance which varied tho ordinary work for t!" Church in this Mission during the past twelve months, was the unusua: quantity of snow, which increased the labour at least threefold. " It may be recorded here, that by the use of snow shoes, only two ser- vices of the whole list were omitted, at which times it was impossible !• reach the back settlements, notwithstanding every exertion by this moitci: tiavf lling. On Christmas day eighteen miles were travelled on snow sIkhv, '■iglit more with horses, and three services held. " In September the Bishop confirmed forty-seven candidates in the Miv sion. His Lordship was pleased to express gratification at the number J confirmed, and the orderly behaviour of the candidates, remarking, in t!u [ loursc of a most accepiablo and appropriate address, as'u matter of import- ;uicc and interest, that the majority of the candidates at Magundy consisted! of young men, expressing also great satisfaction at the progress of the Churo'. | in that place." PouTLAND.— Rev. W. Harrison WTites thait in CQusequonce of the d'-s^ contribution's cc of the deal'' I 17 of Henry O. Simouds, Esq., and the absence of Mr. La'nton from the Prov* iiice, the subscriptions to the Diocesan Church Society, he regrets to state, arc much less than they were for 1860. The amount is £34 58. (JOEENsnuRY. — Rev. H. W. Tippett writes as follows : — " I hand you iinnexed, a list of subscriptions and collections, and regret to say that it does not reach to the amount of the last year. The depressed state of the lumber market seems to be the cause ; and indeed much of the amount subscribed from this cause, is as yet but a promise to pay, for tlie fulfilment of which to the Society, I am I know responsible. I have nothing of any special interest to report from this Mission. The past year has had its usual amount of light and shade, encouragement and the reverse. "The great quantity of snow during the winter made tiavelling very tedious and laborious, and obliged me, with much regret, to suspend for a time the public services at one of my stations, but in other respects my ministerial duties were performed as usual. The Sunday School at Station 4, which was very promising last summer, was altogether broken up by the winter. 1 have however begun it again, though with diminished numbers. The Parsonage Sunday School was regularly held during that season, though lately suspended through the absence of my only assistant. •' I have baptized eight, married two, and buried four persons during t'uc year ; and amongst the last, I may add there was one person who through a long and paiAful affliction, bore such a remarkably beautiful testimony to the power of Christian faith, in imparting peace and resignation and pa- tience to the soul, in a long hopeless illness, that I felt it to be a great pri- vilege to minister to him on holy things. •< During the season of Lent, I held weekly services in a School House near the parsonage, but I cannot say tiiat the attendance was very encouru- ;;ing. I put it down however, in a great measure, to the miserable state ot I (lur roads during thnt period. lam endeavouring conscientiously to discharge every duty of my respon- foible calling, but under a continual sense of personal insufficiency. May I < iod in due time give the encouraging increase both spiritually aud I numerically." Contributions amount to £11 6s. 9d. KiCHiBUCTo. — Rev. N. A. Coster has enclosed the sum of £37 9s. as the I contributions from this Parish, and writes as follows :—•• It affords mo pleasure to send a larger contribution than hos ever" gone from this Parish before. I have only lost one subscriber on the former list, but it is amply compensated by additional subscribers and increased amounts from a num- I tier of smaller contributions, which fairly indicates that the Society has sained favour with many of my fiock. Comparing my list with those of I other Parishes, I feel a little pride in the liberality of my people, and yet I shall be pleased if we are surpassed by many others this present year. " I hope yet to receive a little for the Society at Welford, but it cannot I be done in time for the meeting." Sackville and Dobchester. — Rev. G. G. Roberts reports contributions I greatly exceeding those formerly sent ; they amount to £33 Os. lid. Mr. Itoberts has lately been appointed to this Parish, of which he writes as [tuUows:-" " I am much pleased with my new parishioners, and since my arrival ;imong them have had everything to encourage my labours. Thot the Committee being aware of the contemplated withdrawul nf the Parent Society's aid from the Churches in this Diocese, and regard- ing the Church Society as the only legitimate means by which, with thf blessing of God, the Church can for the future be maintained and extended among us, consider it the paramount duty as well as the privilege of iilt Churchmen, by their united efforts, to sustain and promote to the utmost of their ability the good and holy work in which the Society is now cii- gagcd." " That this Committee would again call the attention of the Society to the spiritual destitution prevailing in many of the extensive ond populous settlements throughout the county of Carleton as well as other portions of this Diocese, and would urge upon the Society the importance of providing for the services of travelling missionaries, whose occasional pastoral visits would in sorao degree, supply the existing need, and prepare the way for I resident Clergymen." Mr. Street also writes as follows : — "The work of this extensive Mission is progressing, and I hojK;, with I t4io blessing of God, to the eternaMvoliare of tliose committed to my past*i- ral care. And though the progress is slow, and but little fruit apparent, I yet I fondly trust that the good seed has not been sown in vain, but that I It may, in God's own time, take deeper root and yield an abundant harvest. " Hut while two Missionaries are left to perform the work in this exten- Isive portion of the Lord's vineyard which would give full employment to three ; it cannot but be, that some portions are neglected, and others but I'artially attended to. Indeed, with all the labour that can bo bestowed, it lis grievous to behold how much is still left undone. In the Parish ot lilichmond alone, there is enough, and more than enough, to engage the J whole attention of one Missionary ; and the members of the Church there ■ are naturally anxious that liichmond should be made a separate Mission, land they would, I believe, contribute largely towards the attainment ol' Ithis object. But this, however desirable, cannot be effected until another jclcrgyman can be provided to aid in the work of the other parts of tht jMission, which is now attended to by the Curate. This wc must sadly admit is a falling off compared with last 3'oar. It could however, hardly liave been anticipated that the amount would have reached the usual sum unlcs> by more than usual exertion. Many causes, it is well known, have combined to make this season one of unpre- (;edented difficulty in raising money. It ought neverthe- less to be deeply impressed u])on the mind of every member of the Society that the engagements it has already under- taken in the Missions on its list, require a considerabk' uuiiuul outlay. From the very small stipends which are thub piovided it would lie, beyond measure, wrong to make the l(!.ist reduction. Other objects too, only of secondary im- jtortanbe, ought not to be abandoned. Every subscriber therefore should continue (if possible) his yearly (,'ontri- bution. In few cases would this require more than a litllt self-denial. JBut can any thoughtful Churchman remain satisfied will; our present position ; cither to go back or stand still, or t' make progress so very slowly ? At the last anniversary meeting of the Society, your lordship brought distinctly under our notice that the time had now arrived i'or the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel— not at once to stop its grants on which we so much depended — but to commence the gradual reduction of its an- nual allowance on such a scale as, by all reasonable calculations, would fulfl! to the letter the pledges given to the present missionaries, while it would enable us to come up, without any sudden embarrassment, or any very extraordinary self-sacrilicing efforts, to the discharge of our duties as I Churciimen. Nearly eighty years have now passed since, mainly by the assistance of I that venerable Society, the foundation of the Church was laid in this Pro- vince, as it has been done in the older Colonies. On the severance of those Colonies from the mother country, a large portion of the loyal inha- bitant?, who adhered to their old allegiance, and removed in 1783 to this new wilderness, were members of the Church of England ; and our firs^ I Clergy beoame missionaries of the Society P. G. F. here, as they had al- I ready been in New York, New .lersey and New England. For the exten- I iion ot missions from time to time, as well as the maintenance of those I lirst formed, our principal reliance has been on that Society, and its annual giants to this Diocese, even at this day, amount to about four thousand fif-t n Hi p u ;)ai)u!ar oduoatifln, while a large ])ortion of our Provincial revenui' \v;i. yearly appropriated to «uoh improvements. This state of things could n • ■ilwavii continue; and it should excite no surprise or complaint that, \vh>:. »t the termination of the wars in Kurope, it became necessary to iqinu/ the expenditure with the revenue, and even reduce a little the euornina- 'lurthen ot the national debt, the Parliamentuiy aid to the Society slioui liiive been withdrawn ; but it is a causw for surprise us well as deep sinii,- 1 Hide, tliiit the Society should have made so small a diminutiou in theiniy lionary grants to these Colonies, and should have continued them su lon^j an the ]>reseut scale, considering the various calls on its bounty from ih settlement of new Colonies, and those arising out of the peculiar circum- stances of tho East and West Indies. Your kjrdship has stated the proposal now made by the Society — to cum I mence the withdrawal of its annual grant, amounting to about £400Ii,1jv tlie small instalment of £100 per annum — so us, in fact, to give us toriyl ycira more before the whole shall cease ; and upon our engaging to afsiiniH ^•xifitiii2 liabilities, to puy to us, in a yearly block sum, the amount ot tfc year's contribution, for us to muke u«e of. Now 1 really think if we miii jtelves had been allowed to dictate the terms, we could not in con^c i.ucr| ;\*vf asked for u more convenient, a more generous arrangement; :ii.i though the pledge re(iuired of us miglu be fultilled in its letter by disiliurj giiig the Society's obligation to existing missionaries and their widow- the true spirit of it would induce us to resolve that no mission in the I'n I vinee, which has hitherto received aid from the Society, should hv lesl without support. As population increases, we may well expect that the clergy will dtrivl a lait^er portion of their inuome from iiaiocl'iul sources than ihey now il'f 'lut it must proceed frora voluntary, nut compulsory contribution; aiulil Dider to draw out this, the istublisl.ment of u permanent fund, froiii tliif iiicoiue of which such grants may be made, as the circumstances of ncj uiiiisiou may require, and which shall be civntinuent ou»the Parish duiij Its part, at least so fur as can be eti'toted with due regard to the position the clerjiyman, becomes so desirable. We should not conceal from owl s.lve.s that the burthen to be assumed is u growing one — hardly to be Ivl for t!ie ttrst year or two, and easy to be borne for live or even ten via: but after that, in order to keep up even what tlie S. This makes it so important i| liruvide in time against the consequences whicii may followiu many uti'Jl rural Parishes, if left to their unaided resources. Could wc be sure that our Governors would always be members of the Church of England, disposed U. 'akc the same interest in the weltiateof the Clutrch as has been done by our present (iovernor, and several ot'hU predecessors a change in the laws might not be so earnestly sought for, but Me have no assurance on that head ; and as to the patronage, Ilcr Ma- jesty's Represbntativo will not be likely to complain of the loss of it. He will feel the surrender of it rather a relief than a spoliation. It should be fully xindcrstood that the proposed change iu the prescnti- • tion will in no manner interfere with the exercise of the functions ajid duties of the Bishop. The laity are, I believe, as anxious as the clergy to preserve theae entire, and would in no manner desire to derogate troa them. An additional reason for adopting the Nova Scotia law is aflbrded by the success which has already attended tho effort to raise a clergy endowment Fund in that Diocese. I understand that eighteen thousand pounds* m already subscribed to the Fund, with a fair prospect of its reaching £20 • AOO at least. Wh«l-1s there now lor us to consider? Are not the members of the Church of England in this Province able, by a united and general efl'urt, to raise the contemplated sum, and if they are, how shall wo set about iC The members of other denominations have done probably fully as much, ii )iot more, considering (heir means, and seem none the woiae lor it. U'eJ think the sum may be raised, and that a commencement should be mads] without delay iu the cities of Predericton and St. John, by select Commit- tees of the Church Society, and carried through the Province by suitabit I agent or agents. We invite both donations and annual subscriptions suck j as^ tlie occasion requires, and such us the means of our people will admit. To what I have already said as to the liberality of the mother countiT | towards us, I might add that while other Colonies have had principally ts provide among themselves for the endowment of the Bishopric— that i< { permanently settled in this Province, by far the largest part of our Ep;>- oppal Fund having been contributed in England. Now when we regard | the progress made in this Province in its material prosperity, and corapart its present Mate with that of fifty years ago, at which time our revoniit was hardly the twentieth part of what it now is ; when we had scarcolv I any roads or bridges, the postal comiriunicatious few and far between, and I very costly, no steamboat, no railroad, no gas, no electric telegraph, scared; a piano or other musical instrument, wheic they are now so numerout^at almost to deserve a column in the cmsus ; without a Church or clcrgymaii in the whoie North-tastern part of the Province, from the Nova Scotia to | the Canada^liue. Deeply liupi eased with the retlrction that the future existence of tli' | Church in many parts of the Province may depend much on the succe-s o; our preseiti I'lfort, 1 think this is not an ordiniuy call which may be mit| by a sum mich as can be spared from the year's income, but is fairly enti- tled to 1 c . trioution from the cup.tul of those who have inherited or aO' opeity ; wh le others jio! so fu"ored miiygive of their iucomti I "uiion of tiic:r lnhor to so si od a cause, and all may help.' f ttliT. left aliiiosf, tin.'t < < tin-ly, without the benefit ot rcli- ... •■ , would, I bcli.vv, -la iiy giv«> u few days' produce of hiil •■-.', "0 oi'tain v • ji itu o*' ■ .sr uul i .'uniiHtrHtion of them; nnJi .■jr.i our iut(i:;i-y, li. But, my Lord, may I not urge on all to remember from whom we have received all w ci yvc. and oil our ability to give or offer ? Are not the words of Daviess itrue now as when he uttered them, " Who am I, and wliat is my people, that we should be able to ofler so willingly after this sort ? Do not let us be overmuch apprehensive of being tro liberal on such an occasion. It may be said to us as the prophet said to Am- mtih, when called ou to give up the appointed aid for Israel, he exclaimed, ' What shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army ot Israel ?" " The Lord is able to give thee much more than this." But he that is greater than any prophet has emphatically said, "A man's life lousisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Be- ware of covetousncss." Let us not deloy, then ; Ictus heartily unite, and try 10 influence others by our example as well as our words. ♦' While we have time let us do good unto all men, especially them of the household of laith." Just before the close of the meeting, Judge Parker said it might bo advisable to have a special meeting of the I Society before the next session of the Legislature, and if
