The duties stated iu the foregoing table are in sterling money, collected lu currency Pt £1 4*. Ad. ($4.87) '^ £ sterling. The ad valorem duties under the Iropf r. Act are calculated on the value at the port ol entry, which value is generally ascertained by adding 10 ^ cent, to the invoice price. The ad valorem duties under the Provincial Act 4 & 5 Vict. cap. 14, are calculated en the actual cost of the articles where purchased. BondSy satisfactory to the Collector, will be taken for Provincial duties exceeding £50 cy. at six months; but all such bonds dated on or after the 1st September, becoire due on the Ist April next ensuing. All goods imported into Canada can be bond- ed and warehoused, without the payment of any duty upon the first entry thereof, at the duly constituted warehousing ports. The several rates of ad valorem duties are easily computed,-— -20 ^ cent, being equal to one-tifth,— 15 ^ cent, to one-tenth and one- half of that tenth— 10 ^ cent, to one-tenth,— 7 ^ cent, to one -twentieth and two-fifths of that twentieth,— 5 ^ cent, to one- twentieth,— and 4 ^ cent, to oue.fifth of one-fifty— of the value on which the duty is to be calculated. The values assigcned to the several coins by the Currency Act are not arbitrary, but are proportioned (exc»*pt in the case of British silver) to the quantity of pure i^old or silver iu each. The £ currency was and is eaual to 4 dollars of account ; and a note for 100 dollars either in Upper or Lower Canada, is now, as it has always been, payable by £25 cy., in any coins equivalent by law to that sum.— By the Currency Act the Provincial dollar of account is made equal in value to that of the United States; and the Eagfle coined after 1834 and before 1341. and passing there for 10 dollars, is therefore made to pass for £2 \0s. cy — and the Par is £1 cy. = 4 dollars of account of the United States, the value of any sum being al- ways that of the leatt valuable coins by which iM REMARKS OK CURRENCY. 69 it can bo legaUr paid. (or £i2l|) cy. But 10 silver dollars of proper weight and fineness, are worth more than an Eagle, or 10 dollars of account,— so that the silver dollar is really worth nearly bs. Id. cy., tor which sum it is directed to pass. In the same manner the values of certain other foreign coins are ascer- tained and assigned. But as subsequent coins of the same nations might vary in weight or fineness,— such coins are not to be a legal ten- der unless under a proclamation issued after assay. British silver forms the exception to the rule stated; it is only worth, as silver, 10-11 of the nominal value for which it passes on the faith of the British Government. This nomi- nal value is maintained by the Currency Act, and such coins, wkUe lawfully current in Great Britain^ pa^s for sums proportionate to their nominal value there, at the rate of £l 4* . ^d. cy. for £1 stg. ; but for the reasons above sta- ted, it is provided that they shall not be a legal tender for more than £2 10*. cy. in any one payment. — At the foregoing rates, \d, sterling is = 1,216666, &c. of \d. cy.
