BY-LAWS OF THE SOCIETYi
1. The Horticultural Society of Quebec is composed of an unlimited
number of members.
2 It ia gf)verned by a Board, composed of a Piosident, Vice-President
and ten Directors, to be chosen by ballot at the annual general meeting,
in December, the date of which will be publicly announced in the press.
3. The Directors will regulate the duties and salary of the Secretary-
Treasurer, selected by them at their annual general meeting, for the space
of one year ; he, alone, receiving remuneration.
4. Four Directors and a Secretary will constitute a c^uorum for the
meetings of the Society.
5. The Presrdent, or, in his absence, the Vice-President, on the ro-
quisition in writing of three Directors, may call a meeting, at such time
and place and as often as he may think fit.
6. The arranging of a Prize List, Rules and Regulations, will be left
to the Board of Directors.
7. The annual subscription ia $2, and, when paid, will for the ensuing
year entitle any member to vote at the election of u Board of Directors
for that year.
8. The moneys collected will be handed to the President and deposit-
ed, in his official name, in any chartered Bank of the city ; checks to be
drawn by him and countersigned by the Secretary-Treasurer,
Prize List.
EULES AND REGfULATIONS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF PHIZES.
1. All the specimens ^Zaceci Id competition for premiums miist be bona
FIDE GROWN PY THE COMPETITOR OR HiH EMPLOYER, or to hftve been at least
two montiis in the po88essji(jn of Exhibitor, and, if i)roved not to be such,
the competitor to bo di8«iualifiecl from receiving any premium whatever, at
the Exhibition.
2. All plants, flowers and fruits, must bo carefully labelled with their
proper names, as far as practicable.
3. All articles to be exhibited for premiums must be in the tent or
building by ten a. m. , on the day of opening, and competitors must bo ready
to leave the building or tent at noon sharp, when the j udges will go round.
This rule will be strictly adhered to. Show to be opened at 3 p.m.
4. All articles exhibited shall remain in the building or tent until the
close of the Exhibition, when they will be delivered to the contributors,
unless otherwise directed.
5. The Judges selected by the Society at a special meeting shall have
the discretionary power of witholding premiums, if, in their opinion, the
articles exhibited do not merit them.
6. In awarding premiums on plants in pots, special reference will be
had to the beauty of the specimens, profusion of bloom, and evidence of
superior cultivation.
In an-anging the fruits on the tables, exhibitors will be required to
place the varieties, as far as iwssible, in separate groups. When a number
of varieties is specified, there must be neither more nor less.
By a variety of fruit is meant an established variety known as such to
pomologists. New varieties, with only local names, are classed as seedlings.
7. Any new or rare fruit, flowers, plants, or other objects of particular
interest, and for which no special premium has been oflfered, may be
recommended, on the last day of the Exhibition, by tlie Judges to the
Committee for a special prize, provided the President reports to them that
there are funds in store.
Prize Liit.
8. PftrtieB will not be allowed to compete for more than one prize in
the tame secti.tn : — no article which has alroudy been awarded a prize will
be entitled to another.
9. No individual, except the Judges, will be allowed to touch or
handle any fruit, flower, or other article exhibited.
10. The decision of the Judges, as regards the premiums, must be
considered final.
11. The Judges shall not be competitors in that class for which they
are to award premiums.
12. While the Judges are making their awards no person shall be
present, except parties not in any way interested, who must be appointed
by the Committee.
13. Any deviation, more or less, from the exact quantities or numbers
specifled in the schedule, will disqualify a competitor in that section.
14. In order to allot the space required in each section, all entries
must be made in writing, not later than the Saturday before noon previous
to the opening of the Exhibition, after which date no entries will be
received.
16. The Society shall not be responsible for damage done to plants
during or after Exhibition, but all ordinary care will be taken of them.
16. The Secretary will not be obliged to receive any entries not made
in writing, blank forms far which will be furnished on application to the
Secretary. Parties living at a distance may make their entries by mail.
17. Cards corresponding with the entries will be furnished to the
exhibitors, who alone will be responsible for the placing of them, and are
requested to satisfy themselves that the cards correctly describe the objects
exhibited. The Society cannot be responsible for any mistake arising from
the non-observance of this or any other rule.
18. Any exhibitor may effect sales, provided the articles sold are not
removed until the close of the Exhibition.
19. Competitors musi state, as nearly as possible, the amount of space
they will require in each section, on a table 3^ feet wide. Exhibitors will
supply their own boxes for exhibiting cut flowers, tables of design, &c.

For the purposes of this Exhibition, the District of Quebec will
be held to comprise the City and County of Quebec, the coun-
ties of Portneuf, Lotbiniire, Dorchester, Beauce, Levi, Mont-
morency, Bellechasse, Montmagny, LIslet.
