The Falls are level or still water, at about three and a halfhours on Xhtjlood, and about two and 8 half on the c&6, so thai they are pnssa- able four times in twenty-Tour hours, about ten or fifteen minutes each time.— No other rule can be given, as much depends on the floods in the River Saint .lohn, and the time of high water or full sea, which i!^ often hastened by high winds, and in proportion to the height of them. 3 LIGHT HOUSES. ,;.Vi ',]i. , Commistioners for tight Howen tn the Buy <{f.F\in4y—h hi? Cape Sable Seal Island Light. — The first Light in approaching the Bay of Fundy^ is on the South Point of the Seal Island. This is a plain white Light— elevated about 80 feet above 'h\^h water mark, and may be seen in approachinig the Island fronir'any point of the compass-. A very dangerous rock, under water, but upon which the sea always breaks, called Blonde liock, lies about two miles S. S. W. by com* pass, from t^e Light House. Between this rock and the Island, there are some dangers— the ground is rocky throughout, and large vessels, therefore ought not to attempt passing between them. Cajje Forchu Light.— TUt Light t^ouse on Cape Forcho, on th» West side of the entrance to Yarmouth, (Nova-Scotia,) in lat. 43 39, Norib ; Ion. 66 8, West, was put in operation on the 15th January, 1840, and exhibits a plain revolving light— visible one minute and a auartcr, and invisible half a minute. The building is painted white, and is ele- vated 135 feet above the level of the sea. -In advancing up the Bay , the next Light is E. from the N. W. Brier Island Li^ht. ... ..v.,»..v^...s »,, ...^. situated on Brier Island, about half a mile point thereof.— A plain white Light, Digby Gut Light.— The next Light on the Coa^t of Nova- Scotia is placed on the West side of Di^by Gut— from l^rier Island North Eastward. The Coast is very bold and not indented ; the Light is therefore chiefly intended as a guide into Digby Basin. The Lamps and Lanterns were renewed in the Spring of 1335, and Reflectors fur- nished, so that the Light is in high order.— A white Light. Gannet Roek Light.— This Light bears from the Light on Brier Island, N. W. i W. 21 miles. It is intended to warn vessels of their approach to a very dangerous range of shoals and ledj^es, which extend from the Old Proprietor to the Seal Islands ofl* Macbias, a distance of .about twenty miles. This mvjf be avoided by keeping three remarkable headlands near the S. W. end of Grand Manan, open.— The red glass having been removed from the Lantern, there is now a flash light— wHiTB—tweniy seconds dark and , fortjr liftbt in each minute; The Light House is painted in stripes, Teftical, black and white. Macluas Seal blanda tAghta.—^hexe are two fixed whitb Lights upon the Machias Seal Islands, .idvated about forty-five feet above high water, and bear from each other £1. S. EI. and W. t^. W. distant about 200 feet, by which circumstance of two Light Houses at the <«anie station, they will be immediately distinguished from all other Lights upon the Coast, (British or American)— the following are the bearings from them, viz. : . To the Southernmost Murr Ledge, (St. Mary's,) E. S. E. easterly. Gannet Rock Light, E. by S. 4 S. 13 miles. 4( (I Southern Head of Grand Manan, E. by N. i N. Northern Head of Grand Manan.N. E^ i E. N. E. Rock, distant 2 miles, N. E. by N. " Little River Head, N. by W. " Libby Island Light House, (American,) N. W. by W. Vessels standing in to the Northward, between these Lights and the Gannet Rock, should tack or haul ofl* the moment they bring these Liehts in one, as they will then not be more than three fonrtna of a mile from the Murr Ledges, if more than five miles to the East of the Lirhts. l^ead Harbour Lig-ht.—'Next in order afler passing Grand Manan and the plain wliiie Light (American) on West Quoddy Point, is Head Harbour Light. This is placed on the North East extremity of Campo Bello, and is a guide to vessels entering the main Channel to Wesi Isles, Moose Island, and the inner Bay of Passamac[uoddy ; it enables vessels also at all times to enter Head Harbour— it is a fixed WHiTC Light. Point Le Preau Lig-hts.—Vj^n this projecting head land iffo Lights are placed, one above the other in the same House, and dit rrA twenty- eight feet.— Both Lights can be seen from every point of ttif^ ".ompass, where they may be useful— both are fixed and white. In consequence of orders tram the Home Government, this Light House was, in IS40, painted red and whit6,in stripes of five feet broad each, horizontally, in order that it may be seen more distinctly at a distance. Partridge Island Liff/U.— This Light nt the entrance of the River find Harbour of Saint John, having been established upwards of forty years, requires no particular nutice, further than it is a fixed white Lij;ht, and that the Light House is red and white in vertical stripes. Beacon Lirht.—W iihia Partridge Island, and upon a Spit or Bir, which extends about half a mile S. S. E. off Sand Point, and which dries at two-thirds ebb, stands the Beacon Tower. Upon this Tower a light is established, which is eminently useful to the coasting trade of ^aint John, and to alt other vessels having pilots on board, as it enables them to enter the harbour at all hours of the night. A fixed WHITE Light. The House is white and l>lack, in stripes, vertically. Qnaco JJg-ht.—A revolving whi iB Light is placed on a small rock off Quaco Head, showing twice full and twice dark in a minute. This liight can be seen from any quarter where a vessel can approach. — The Light House is painted white and red, in horizontal stripes. . Cape Enrafe lAghi.—k nev Light Houso has been lighted ort Cape Enrage m WestmoFtand, nearljr opposite Apple Rirer Harbour. The House is painted white.— A plain white light. N. B.— As the order for painting the Light Houses of New-Bruns-* wick and Nova-Scotia of various colours, arrived late in the Fall, it may so happen that Head Harbour and the Machias Seal Island Light Hou'jes may remain of plain white till next year. *J^ The half of the expense of the Cape Sable and Brier Island liignts is paid by New-Brunswick, as they are so highly' useful to vessels trading with this Province. LIGHT HOUSES IN NOVA SCOTIA. [In addition to the Light Houses in Nova Scotia, before noticedt there are the following.] (Samdro—Sambro Island, mouth of Halifax harbour— a fixed light. /?ojctray— M'Ntttt's Island, mouth of Shelburne Harbour— two lights, one above the other. JTo/^/aar— Meagher's Beach, Halifax— one light. i*icfou— Entrance to Piclou Harborr— one fixed light. Loio Poini— Entrance to Sydney Harbour— one fixed light. Cross Island lAgki is situate at the entrance of Lunenburg Har- bour, in lat. 44 22, North ; long. 64 6, West. The Light House is situated on the South East end of the Island,— and displays two lights —one Bijlash light, thirty feet above the ordinary fixed light. In clear weather these lights can be veen so soon as a vessel loses sight of Sambfo Lij^bt, and, under favourable circumstances, it is visible at the distance ofnve leagues, and distinguishable at three leagues. Scatarie Light House. — This building is placed near the North Eastern end of the Island, is painted white, and elevated about nine- ty feet above the level of the sea, exhibiting a revolving light, visible one minute, and invisible half a minute. The light can lie seen from a southward or seaward position, and without interruption from any hich- iand, until the compass bearing becomes to the eastward of N. E. hyri. when it will be speedily obscured, and a vessel so placed on that side of the Islaad, is in danger either of the rocks of Scatarie or the southern shores olTJape Bretoa Island.— From any positi(5h to tho Northward or in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the light can he seen while the distance admits, but when it bears to the Eastward of S. E. a ship is m dan- gtr on the N. E. shores of Cape Breton, therefore as a present rule^, whereby due warning may be obtained, the light house should never lie brought to bear Eastward of N. N. E. or S. E. by S. by compass, nor, yet approach nearer than one and a half or two miles. Saint Paul's Light Houses.— Two Light Houses have been erect- ed on the North and South extremes of the Island of Saint Paul's.— The one on the North East end of the Island is a very brilliant fixed light, and is elevated about 130 feet above the level of the sea. The one on the South West end of the Island is a Flash Light. One of the light houses will be always open until a ship is on the rocks near the centre. The Northern light can be seen to the southward, on any bearing except between N. by E. and E. by N. when it is obscured by the hills to the southward of it. The southern Light can be seen from the northward on anv bearing except between S. S. E. and W. when that is obscured by toe hills i\j the northward of it. m ? ) 1st Month. IVany a farm, when fresh, has l)een rendered sterile and xinproduc- liie in a few years, Ity skimming tlie surface. Dorp ploughing j)rings up latent animal and vegetable panicles favourahle to the growth cf plants, renders the soil loose nnd frialile, and above all, prevents t'lc ground from washing. Hilly land should always be ploughed in a cir- cular direction, nnd if at the same time it is broken deep, it is rarely the case that hills will not retain all tie rain that fulls upon them. — Agriculturist. Rohan Potatobs. — We have beau favoarcd by Mr. Gregory with the following: memoranda, having reference to the Rohan Potatoes ; which have these advantages: that a small quantity of seed is requir- ed-there is a great saving of labour, particularly in digging— and they will he found niore useful in remote Bettleivionis. where there is 110 market. At the same time it is considered that trie season is too short, to bring this potatoe to perfection, althoush it will doubtless improve when acclimated. Mr. G. mokes the subjoined remarks ; '' I question the propriety of recommending tlicm for immediate nnd general introduction. The result of the experiments repoued is very satisfactory; but it is very doubtful wli^ilier several of the varieties now in gencal cultivation would not yiefd bolter with the same pains, nllowing, however a larger quantity of scoa. The produce was 70 pounds of poialoos, me»5:uring nearly 4 peeks;, and may be estimalecl at the rate of 53 J bushels 'o the aero, with 8 pecks or seed. PoTATOBS.— It is ft&td that late potatoes, ol such as are not tipe,. make the best seed, aud that planting such restores a degenerated V9« rieiy. UoiD to obtain new varieties qf Fotatoet.—^ake the apples of potS' toes, or potato halls before the frost has hurt them, hang them up by the foot stalks in a dry closet, where they will not freeze. Let tnen» hang till March or A pril. Then inash the apples, wash the seeds from the pulp, and dry them in a sunny window. Sow the seeds in a beit about the first of May. When the plants are lour or five inches high,, transplant them into ground well prepared, one or two in a hill. They will produce full grown anples, and some of the roots will be as large as hens' eggs. English farmers hold it absolutely secessary to renew their potatoes from the top seed once iu fourteen or fifteen years. Saving Seeds.— Every farmer should endeavour to save such seed^ as bo may want, selecting from the Lest aud most productive plants. There is scarcely an article cultivated by the farmer or the gardener, that may not be improved by selection and care. Plants, the varieties of which are liable to intermix, when intended for seed, should be planted at such distances from each other, that the pollen of thefr flowers cannot intermix. Beets, cabbages, turnips, squashes, and even corn, should be planted at a distance from other varieties of the same plant, if pure seed would be had. Seeds keep well, by simply cutting them when sufficiently ripe, hanging them up in i dry place, until tnoroualJy dried or until wanted. Herbs, too, shoul J be saved, as more or less of them arc wanted in every family for culinary or medicinal purposes. There are manv who might, were it not for tbeir negligence, secure an abundant supply of gooaseeds, and pot or sweet herbs, that when such things are wanted are obliged to rely on the greater forethought and charity of their neighbours. CvcvMOEn. Seed.— Some people do not know t. >w to cleanse the cucumber seeds which they save ftoir their own gardens. They cut the cucumbers open, dry them and dig out the seed with the dry mu> cilage adhering to the seeds. A better way is— when the cucumbers arc ripe, cut them open and scrape out the seed, with alt the mucilage, into an iron or tin vessel large enough to contain them. Put water into Uie vessel, and set it in a place moderately warm. In a few hoi;rH fermentation will take place, that will collect alt the mucilage together on the top of the water, leaving the sound and heavy seeds tu sink clear tu tnc bottom. Puurof the water with the thick stuff'on the top, and there you have the seeds clean. Put them where they will dry and then by them away till the next spring.— A/atnc Cultivator. Herbs, if dried in the sun, turn yellow, lose their fragrance and much nf their real virtue. They should be spread out tbm, say upon the iloor of II sarret or open chamber and luA to dry in the shade, being occasionally turned. Whcu sufficiently dried, they may be lied in bunches and hung up. — lb. Preservation or Caouagbs.— The Albany Cultivator recommends lilt! following method of preserving cabbages for winter use, as the re* suit of experience :— " The cabbages should bo gathered before injury is doie them by the severe fall frus.st < the heavy outside leaves should remain on the stalk. Fix a string or cord round tho stump near the roots, suspend- ed from the sleepers with the heads duwuward in a cool cellar^ and 4 J II 'i ! I h I 78 they are ready and fit for use at ah timee. Cabbages kept in thi« manner retain all their peculiar flavour and sweetness; the whole vir- tue of the stump and leaves is concentrated in the part which is used, ■are handy of access,' oceupv but little room which would be occupied for other purposes, and seldom, if ever, rot; the outside leaves wilt and contract, and in time become quite dry, which form a sort of coating that serves to exclude the air Irom the inside of the head. *< Another method, highlv recommended, is to cut the head from the stump, pack close in asacir, taking care to fill up the vacancies with dry cnon, thereby excluding the air, and keep in a dry cellar. '^ AsHB» FOR TuBKiPs. — A great object is gained by bringing tur- nips forward as rapidly as possible alter they come up, as the princi- pal danger of destruction or failure is before the rough leaf is put forth. In England, bone dust is usually drilled in with the seed, to hasten the eany growth ; here bone dus't is comparatively rare, but a mixture of soot and ashes, or ashes alone, is found to be a very good application, particularly for the common turnip, and may be sown up- on them broad cast, or scattered over the rows by hand. It will hasten their growth, prove a partial protection against the insects, and improve the size and goodness of the roots.— [Cu//tra/or. For Scoutts on Dvsentehv ik Horser.— One-fourth of an ounce of gum gamboga, half an ounce of aloes ; half an ounce of sulphur ; — reduce all to a tine powder ; add flour and water tilt it makes it thick dough or paste. Divide it into fouv pills ; give one pill every night and morning. Give the horse half an ounce of ipccacuana, dissolved in about two quarts of hot water, by adding half a pint of th^ solution into a pail of water for him to drink every four hours. When the fe- ver has abited, take a quart of oak liark, pour two quarts of hot water upon it, and lot it stand till cool. Give the horse a pint of this bark tea in a pail of water, and let the horse drink of it freely. Another.— Take a table-spoonful of saleratus, reduce It to >i powder, and give it to the horse in a pint of new milk. Repeat the dose if ne- cessary. This remedy has proved efifectual in some severe cases.
