 INTRODUCTION. 
 
 The design of this Catechism is to afford assistance 
 to those who are engaged in teaching infants. It 
 is intended that the children be taught to repeat 
 the answers intelligently y and not merely by rote 
 with the hope that by and bye they will understand 
 them. In accordance with this design is the plan 
 of the Catechism. 
 
 1. All Theological terms have been studiously 
 avoided as tinintelligible. They will be learned 
 afterwards when the pupil is able to read and takes 
 up the Assembly's Shorter Catechism. 
 
 2. It has been as studiously the endeavour of the 
 Author to give expression in child's language to 
 Theological ideas as they present themselves to a 
 child. And it is hoped that the child will find, wheu 
 he comes to the Shorter Catechism, only a fuller and 
 more exact expression of ideas already in his mind 
 in their simple geru^ 
 
 3. Scripture History affords a series of pictures 
 in which truth and duty are presented to us. 
 Children feel an interest in these storieo. Under

 INTEODUCTION. 
 
 each (question will be found such histories, illustra- 
 tive of the points contained in the question. It is 
 intended that the teacher or parent read these pas- 
 sages carefully over and master them, before meet- 
 ing with the children ; then without hook that he 
 tell the story in his own simplest language, and en- 
 force the point in hand. In so doing the talent for 
 speaking to children will be developed, while in 
 God's own pictures the children will see the will of 
 God. 
 
 Should the Catechism be well received in our 
 Sabbath Schools, a second edition will be issued. 
 Suggestions will be thankfully received from 
 any teacher, so as to improve in every possible way 
 this important branch of Sabbath School instruction. 
 
 Meanwhile this little work is sent forth to parents 
 and teachers of Sabbath Schools in the hope and 
 with the prayer that it may be useful or at least 
 prepare the way for something simpler and better.
