During the three following years (1870—73) I kiught mathematics and physics in the special academy, Pictou, N. S. Vt the end of that period, having obtained my second degree, (M. A.) at Dalhousie Univer- sity, I came to Europe for the purpose of further prosecuting the study of science, especially physics. I accordingly entered the university of Leipzig, in Saxony, in the Autumn of 1873 where I remained three years studying physics etc. and working in Professor Wiedemann's Laboratory. Upon presenting a dissertation to the philosophical faculty of that University containing an account of a series of original investigations upon the „Absorption of gases in saline solutions", and passing an examiuatiou in physics under Prof. Ilankcl, Chemistry under Prof. Wiedemann and botany under Prof. Schenck, I obtained, in 187G, the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Since then 1 have been following up my theoretical studies under Prof- llelmholtz, Kirchhoff etc. in the university of Berlin, and carrying out ori ginal investigations in the physical laboratory under the special direction of Professor Ilclmholtz. A few testiraonials are here appended from Professors in Europe nnder whom I have studied together with two or three of those taken with me- from Canada. I have the honor to be Sir Physical Laboratory, University of Berlin. Your very obedient servant John James Mackenzie. Gcehrter Ilerr College! As a teacher Mr. Mackenzie has given very groat, satisfaction showing not only that his own nnnd is well cultivated, but also that he is skilful lu eommunicatiug to others, as evinced by the progress made by the students under his instruction, reflecting honour both upon himself and upon ' -e uistitution. Inspcrtor of public schooU., Pictou county. N S. This ccrtifi(>H that I have known the bearer John James Mackenzie Esq. M. A. from his earliest years. I gave him hia first Icssous wlicu ho was a little schoolboy, and liave attentively observed his career through the sc.iool, the academy and the university, and also as a teacher in tlH\ public schools of his native country. During life, in all the positions occupied he has invariably main- tained a high reputation for sincerity, integrity and fidelity. During the last three years I have had much official intercourse with him of the most plcising character, while teaching in the mathe- matical and philosophical department of Pictou academy. During the whole of this period he has been very successful and has given the most ample satisfaction. His retiring from the academy in company with his fellow labourer and fellow student (Mr, B.; is with the view of travelling and prosecuting their fuither studies in company on the continent of Europe. Tlough their removal leaves a blank that we all regret we would not present on obstacle to the obtaining of their most laudable aim. Mr. Mackenzie carries with him the esteem and good wishes of all, and it affords nie much pleasure to add my humble testimony to that of others, and I most cordially recommend '.im to tlu- favour of any who may wish the services of a most efficient and successful teacher New-Glasgow, lb.
