 ARTICLE I. 
 
 This Lodge shall be constituted of at least five 
 Members of the Scarlet Degree, including one qnali- 
 fied to preside at its meetings, and shall be hailed 
 and entitled the " Commercial Lodge, No. 5, 1. 0. 
 of 0. F., of the Province of Canada," and shall pos- 
 sess the full powers and privileges of a Subordinate 
 Lodge, holding a legal, unreclaimed and valid Char- 
 ter, duly granted and formally presented by the 
 Grand Lodge of the Province of Canada. 
 
 [Resolved, — Tliat the Grand Lodge of Cnnada hns supreme juris- 
 diction over the Order in all its departments in the Province of Canada ; 
 and that all Subordinate Lodges under this jurisdiction, are bound to

 A Subordinate Lodge ought to receive respectfully all communi- 
 cations which emanate from a Grand Lodge, or from the Grand Master 
 of the particular State or District within which the Subordinate Iiodj;e 
 is located. There is no objection to pennitting respectful debate on 
 such communications. — In G. L, U. S. 1845.] 
 
 ARTICLE 11. 
 
 OF MEMBERSHIP. 
 
 SECTION L— ADMISSIONS. 
 
 Clause 1. — No proposition for the admission of a 
 minor, or person under the age of twenty-one years, 
 shall be entertained ; nor shall any person be received 
 into this Lodge for a less sum than One Pound Five 
 Shillings. 
 
 fNo person shall hold Membership in more than one Grand or Sub- 
 ordinate Lodge or Encampment at the same time. — Bye-Laws, G. L, 
 U. S. Jirt. XF.] 
 
 Clause 2. — ^The name, age, occupation, and place 
 of abode of every applicant for Membership, must 
 be handed in by a Member in writing, and be en- 
 tered on the record, and the subject referred to three 
 brothers for investigation, who shall report thereon 
 at the next regular meeting, when the application 
 shall be determined by ballot, and not otherwise ; 
 and if, on balloting, less than three black balls be 
 found, the Candidate shall be accepted ; if three or 
 more be found, he shall be rejected, and so declared. 
 
 [Resolved, — That each proposition for Membership must be refer- 
 red to a Special Committee, appointed at the time the individual is 
 proposed, and that a Brother shall not be appointed on more than one

 Committee on the same evening, provided a suflicient number of Bro- 
 tliers are present. — Resolution, G. L. of Canada, J^o. 18. 
 
 Resolved, — That it is irrenrular for any Lodpe to allow a propo- 
 sition for Membership to be withdrawn after it has been referred to a 
 Committee, and the Candidate thus proposed shall be balloted for. — 
 Resolution, G. L. of Canada, JVo. 15. 
 
 REsoLVBn, — That it is irregular for any Snbordiiiate Lodge under 
 this jurisdiction to permii a Committee of Investigation of the Character 
 of an applicant for Membership to delay a final Ke|)ort longer than four 
 weeks from the time the proposition is made, or to delay a Rallot on 
 the same beyond the evening on which the Report is made. — Resolu- 
 tion, G. L. of Canada, ^Ivguat, 1845.] 
 
 Clause 3. — When a Candidate has been rejected, 
 notice thereof shall be sent without delay to the 
 Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge, and to all the 
 Lodges in the Province ; and no person so rejected 
 shall be again balloted for in any Lodge for the space 
 of six months. 
 
 [Resolved, — That when a Candidate for Membership has been 
 rejected in a Subordinate Lodge, it shall be the duty of the Secretary 
 of the Lodge where such rejection takes place, to give notice thereof to 
 this Grand Lodge, and to all the Subordinate Lodges under this juris- 
 diction, without note or comment ; and the same action shall be taken 
 in all cases of expulsion or suspension. — Resolution, G. L.of Canada,

 Resolved, — That in the opinion of this Grand Lodge, it is highly 
 irregular for a Subordinate Lodge to pass a Resolution, expressing an 
 opinion as to the reason of the rejection of a Candidate for Member- 
 ship. — Resolution, G. L. of Canada, J^To. 25.] 
 
 Clause 4. — A Brother of the Order wishing to be- 
 come a Member, shall present his card from the 
 Lodge of which he was formerly a Member, which 
 shall be referred to a Committee of three, and in 
 other respects disposed of as provided by Clause 2 
 for other applicants, and, on being admitted, shall 
 pay a sum of not less than fifteen shillings. 
 
 [Resolved, — That it is irregular for any Lodge to admit any Brother 
 as an Honorary Member thereof. — Resolution, G.L. of Canada, ^Vo. 17.]

 Clause 5. — An Ancient Odd Fellow, whose card 
 is out of date, or which may have been lost, can be 
 admitted by referring his application to a Committee, 
 and disposing of it in other respects as is provided 
 for other applicants in the foregoing Clauses, and on 
 his paying into the Lodge funds a sum of not less 
 than One P ^und Five Shillings. 
 
 [Rrsolved, — That an " Ancient Odd Fellow " is a person, who hav- 
 ing been regularly initiated into a legal Lodge of the Independent 
 Order of Odd Fellows, has honorably withdrawn by card from the 
 Lodge of which he was last a Member, and, retaining his card, the 
 same is out of date, by reason of more than twelve months having 
 transpired since it was granted ; or, having lost his card, good and 
 satisfactory evidence is presented of his honorable withdrawal from the 
 Lodge of which he was last in Membership. — Resolution, G. L. of 
 Canada, J^To. 1.] 
 
 Clause 6. — This Lodge shall not admit to Mem- 
 bership, either by initiation or otherwise, any person 
 who has been rejected by any other Lodge, until at 
 least six months after the date of said rejection ; nor 
 shall this Lodge receive in Membership any person 
 who has previously been a Member of this Order, by 
 new initiation or otherwise — unless it is satisfactorily 
 shown, by his card or otherwise, of his having hon- 
 orably withdrawn from the Lodge of which he was 
 last a Member, and that he is not an expelled or sus- 
 pended Member — without the consent of the Grand 
 Lodge. 
 
 SECTION II.— CONTRIBUTIONS AND BENEFITS. 
 
 Clause 1. — The regular contributions to the Lodge 
 fund shall not be at a less rate than Five Shillings 
 per quarter, to be determined by the Bye-Laws. One- 
 third of whatever be the quarterly contributions shall 
 go to the Widows and Orphans' Fund ; and the

 Clause 2. — Every hondfide Member, who shall be 
 qualified as required by the Bye-Laws, shall, in case 
 of sickness or disability, be entitled to and receive 
 such weekly benefit as may be fixed by Law, from 
 the funds of the Lod:re. 
 
 Clause 3. — In case of the death of a Brother, who 
 is qualified as provided in Clause 2, there shall be 
 allowed from the Lodge a sum not less than Seven 
 Pounds Ten Shillings, to defray the expenses of 
 burial ; which shall be paid over, without delay, to 
 the deceased Brother's nearest of kin. The N. G., 
 in the absence of competent relations, shall take 
 charge of the funeral, and receive account of the 
 disbursements. 
 
 Clause 4. — On the demise of the Wife of a 
 Brother, qualified by Clause 2, he shall be entitled 
 to a sum of not less than Three Pound? Fifteen Shil- 
 lings, for the purpose of assisting to iljfray the fune- 
 ral expenses. 
 
 [Resolved, — That it shall not be lawful to use publicly the name 
 of the Order, for invitations to funerals, unless it be for the death of a 
 Brother. — Resolution, G, L. of Canada, JVb. 22,] 
 
 SECTION III.— PENALTIES AND TRIAL. 
 
 Clause 1. — Any Member who shall violate any 
 of the principles of the Order, or offend against 
 these Articles or Bye-Laws, shall be subject to be

 fined, reprimanded, suspended, or expelled, as the 
 Bye-Laws may direct, ancient usage require, or the 
 Lodge determine. 
 
 Clause 2. — Every Member shall be entitled to a 
 fair trial for any offence involving reprimand, sus- 
 pension, or expulsion ; but no Member shall be put 
 on trial, unless charges duly specifying his offence 
 be submitted to the Lodge in writing, by Brothers of 
 the Order, except when made liable by non-pay- 
 ment to the Lodge. 
 
 [Resolved, — That ony Brother of the Order, in preferring charges 
 against another Brother, must do so in the Lodge to which the Brother 
 belongs. — Resolution, O. L, of Canada, JVo. 13.] 
 
 Clause 3. — When charges have been preferred 
 against a Brother in a proper manner, or any matter 
 of grievance between Brothers be brought before the 
 Lodge, they shall be referred to a Special Committee 
 of five Members ; and they shall, with as little delay 
 as the case will admit, summon the parties, and ex- 
 amine and determine the matter in question ; and if 
 not involving the expulsion or suspension of a Mem- 
 ber, or no appeal be taken from their decision to the 
 Lodge, it shall be final, without other action from 
 the Lodge. Should the Committee be convinced of 
 the necessity of suspending or expelling a Member, 
 they shall submit a motion for the purpose to the 
 Lodge for action. 
 
 Clause 4. — When a motion for the expulsion or 
 suspension of a Member shall have been submitted 
 in due form, it shall be announced at two regular 
 meetings previous to action being taken ; and the

 termined to consider the question ; at which time, 
 whether the implicated Brother be present or not, the 
 Lodge may proceed to consider and determine it. 
 Two-thirds of all the qualified Members present vot- 
 ing in favour of the motion, it shall be carried; and 
 the Lodge shall be fully competent, while such mo- 
 tion is under consideration, to vary the penalty from 
 the original motion. 
 
 Clause 5. — When the decision of a Committee, 
 appointed under Clause 3, shall not be satisfactory 
 to all parties, either of those interested shall have an 
 appeal to the Lodge ; and at the time appointed for 
 trying^ the appeal, the Committee shall present to the 
 Lodge in writing the grounds on which their decision 
 was founded ; and the parties shall have the privi- 
 lege of being heard before the Lodge ; and the Lodge 
 shall determine the correctness of the decision of the 
 Committee, by a majority of the votes < iven. 
 
 Clause 6. — Any Brother feeling aggrieved by the 
 decision of the Lodge against him, is entitled to an 
 appeal to the Grand Lodge for a new trial, if infor- 
 mality or want of fairness be shown on the former 
 trial ; and, on the command of the Grand Lodge, the 
 Brother may be tried anew for the same offence. 
 
 [Resolved, — ^That it is the opinion of this Grand Lodge, that when 
 a Brother of a Subordinate Lodge has been suspended or expelled, and 
 appeals from the decision of his Subordinate Lodge, to a State Grand 
 Lodge, on the ground of " informality or want of fairness," said Grand 
 Lodge has not the power to grant a new trial, unless informality or 
 want of fairness be shown on the former trial, or new testimony be dis-

 ARTICLE III. 
 
 OF OFFICE RS. 
 
 SECTION I.— ELECTIVE AND APPOINTED OFFICERS. 
 
 Clause 1. — The elective Officers of the Lodge 
 shall consist of N.G., V.G., Secretary, and Trea- 
 surer, who shall serve a regular term each. How- 
 ever, when deemed necessaryj the Lodge may elect 
 a Permanent Secretary in addition, to serve at least 
 six months. 
 
 Clause 2. — The appointed Officers shall consist 
 of a W., C, O.G., LG., R.S.N.G., L.S.N.G., 
 R.S.V.G., L.S.V.G., and R. and L. S.S., who shall 
 serve a regular term each, and the Lodge may ap- 
 point at its option a Chaplain for a similar term. 
 
 [Resolved. — That it is irregular for any Lodge to create Officers 
 others than those enumerated in the Constitution for Subordinates. —

 SECTION II.— DUTIES OF OFFICERS. 
 
 Clause 1. — The duties of the various Officers 
 shall be as laid down in the charges of their office, 
 and as specified by these Articles, and by the Bye- 
 Laws of the Lodge. 
 
 Clause 2. — A Permanent Secretary, when one 
 has been chosen by the Lodge, shall take charge of 
 the accounts between the Lodge and its Members ; 
 but the Secretary shall record the proceedings, and 
 perform all the other duties of the office. 
 
 SECTION m.— ELECTIONS, &c. 
 
 Clause 1. — No Brother shall be eligible to the 
 chaii' of the N.G., unless he has served a regular term

 as V.G. ; nor shall any Brother be eligible as V.G., 
 unless he has served at least one term in some elec- 
 tive or appointed office. 
 
 Clause 2. — All elective Officers, and the W. and 
 O.G., shall have attained to the Scarlet Degree pre- 
 vious to installation. 
 
 Clause 3. — Nominations for the elective Officers 
 shall be made only on the two meetings immediately 
 preceding that of the elections, except when the 
 nominees for an office all decline. 
 
 Clause 4. — No Past Officer shall be qualified to 
 be a candidate for the office past, when other nomi- 
 nations are before the Lodge, unless he has been 
 two full terms out of such office, except the Trea- 
 siirer and Permanent Secretary. 
 
 Clause 5. — Officers shall be elected at the last 
 regular meeting in each term ; and shall be installed 
 at the first meeting in the succeeding one. 
 
 [The installations of Officers in Subordinate Lodges shall be con- 
 ducted only in manner and form, as provided by the Installation 
 Books.— Bye-Laws, O. L. U. S., Art. XXVII. 
 
 Resolved, — That when the M.W.G.M., D.G.M., or Deputies duly 
 authorized by the Grand Master, shall attend to install the Officers of a 
 Subordinate Lodge, it would be highly improper for such Subordinate 
 Lodge to install themselves ; and that in cases where the G.M.. 
 D.G.M., or any P.G., duly deputed by the G.M., shall not attend in due 
 and proper time to install such Officers, that in such coses the P.G.'s of 
 such Lodge may install their own Officers. They shall immediately 
 report to the G.M. their proceedings, and the G.M. sliiiU then proceed, 
 with all reasonable despatch, to give the N.G. of such Lodge, so in-

 Clause 6. — Any Officer absenting himself for more 
 than four successive meetings, his seat may be 
 declared vacant by a vote of the Lodge ; and all

 Regular quarterly terms shall commence on the 
 first meetings in July, October, January, and April ; 
 and regular semi-annual terms shall commence on 
 the first regular meetings in July and January only ; 
 and all terms shall end on the day on which the 
 succeeding ones commence. 
 
 SECTION II.-RETURNS. 
 
 Clause 1. — It shall be the duty of the last Past 
 Officers to prepare and forward to the Grand Lodge, 
 immediately, a regular report of the work of the term, 
 including the names of those initiated, admitted by 
 card, rejected, withdrawn by card, suspended or 
 expelled, and the cause thereof, reinstated, and de- 
 ceased ; together with the number of certificates for 
 Degrees granted, the whole number in Membership, 
 the amount of receipts, and the result of the election 
 of Officers, accompanied by whatever amount may 
 be due to the Grand Lodge. 
 
 Clause 2. — It shall be the duty of the Lodge also 
 to forward to the Grand Lodge, in like manner, up to 
 the first day of July annually, a full return of the

 SECTION III.— FORFEITURE OF CHARTER. 
 
 Should this Lodge fail to make its returns, as re- 
 quired by the 2nd Section of this Article, for four 
 successive terms, it shall thereby forfeit its Charter, 
 and become extinct ; and it shall become the duty 
 of the last installed Officers, to transmit or surrender, 
 within three months, to the Grand Secretary, (or such 
 other Brother as may be appointed by the Grand 
 Lodge to receive them,) the Charter, books, papers, 
 furniture, and funds of the Lodge. 
 
 ARTICLE V. 
 
 DbGREES. 
 
 SECTION I.— ELIGIBILITY FOR DEGREES. 
 
 Brothers who have been in Membership one month 
 shall be eligible for Degrees ; and not more than three 
 Degrees shall be conferred on a Brother on the same 
 meeting, unless the most urgent necessity be proved.

 withwut the consent of the Lodge to which the Member belongs, given

 Lodge, shall be allowed to be jiresent in Lodge, un- 
 less in full Regalia appertaining to his Degree or 
 rank in the Order. 
 
 Clause 3. — Every Brother shall supply himself 
 with Regalia suitable to the highest Degree he may 
 have attained, within two months from the time of 
 his admission to such Degree. 
 
 [The Regalia of the Order shall be as follows, to wit : Aprons and 
 Collars of Subordinate Lodges .shall be white, trimmed with the em- 
 blematic colour of the Degree intended to be rejjresented, i.e., first de-

 Clause 2. — Any Brother to be nominated for the

 in the fifth month of his term of service, a Past P.S.,

 Clause 3. — No nomination shall be received, un- 
 less the Brother nominated signify his consent there- 
 to ; nor shall any nomination be held to be of force 
 at the time of proceeding to election, unless such 
 Brother be then present in Lodge, or have sent the 
 Lodge a sufficient excuse in writing. 
 
 Clause 4. — Before proceeding to open the poll for 
 an election of Officers, the N.G. shall appoint two 
 Brothers of the Lodge in good standing, and who 
 have attained the Scarlet Degree, to be Tellers ; and 
 it shall be their duty to guard the ballot-box, to 
 count the votes given, and to make return thereof to 
 the N.G. and to the Lodge. 
 
 Clause 5. — It shall be the duty of such Tellers to 
 allow no Brother to vote, until after his name shall 
 have been called by the P.S. from his roll of the 
 Brothers entitled by law to vote. 
 
 Clause 6. — The Tellers shall in no case count as 
 a part of the poll any blank vote, or vote given for 
 any person not a Member of the Lodge in good 
 standing, or not at the time in regular nomination 
 for tlio office for which such vote may be given. 
 
 Clause 7. — As soon as each balloting shall be 
 completed, the N.G. shall close the poll ; and no

 Clause 1. — It shall be the duty of the N.G. to 
 preside in the Lodge, and enforce a due observance 
 of the Constitution and Laws, and a proper respect 
 for the Grand Lodge of the Province of Canada; to 
 see that all the Oificers of the Lodge and Members 
 of Committees perform their respective duties, as en- 
 joined by the Charges and Laws ; to take care that 
 all tines, not requiring the vote of the Lodge for their 
 imposition, be punctually charged on the books of 
 the P.S. ; to exercise a vigilant supervision in re- 
 gard to all irregularities subjecting Brothers to fine 
 or other penalty at the vote of the Lodge, and to 
 bring the same officially, whenever known to him, 
 under the consideration of the Lodge, without fear 
 or favour ; to take charge of the Charter of the 
 Lodge, and to have it always in the Lodge while in 
 session ; to summon special meetings whenever he 
 may consider it necessary, or when requested to do 
 so by any five Brothers of the Lodge in good stand- 
 ing ; to appoint all Officers and Committees not 
 otherwise provided for ; to name to fill all vacancies

 Bye-Laws of the Loilge, or by any vote of the Lodge

 SECTION X.— DUTY OF THE WARDEN. 
 
 It shall be the duty of the Warden to see that the 
 Keeper place out the Regalia for the use of the 
 Brothers, before the opening of the Lodge, and, at its 
 close, collect and put away the same in a careful 
 manner ; to act as Chairman of thd Property Com- 
 mittee ; and to perform such other duties as are 
 prescribed in the Charge of his c ffice.

 Fellow, may be suspended, or dismissed from office, 
 by a vote of two-thirds of the Brothers of the Lodge 
 present and voting on any motion to that eii'ect : Pro- 
 vided always, that no such motion be put to the vote 
 at any meeting, whether regular or special, unless 
 formal notice have been giventhereof by two Brothers 
 of the Lodge in good standing, at the regular meeting 
 next preceding, and written or printed notices of 
 such motion have been sent in consequence, (as it is 
 hereby required that in such case they shall be,) at 
 least eight hours previous to such meeting, to every 
 Brother of the Lodge resident in town. 
 
 Clause 2. — For absence during more than four 
 successive meetings, any Officer may be dismissed,

 the Committee personally to visit the sick Brother ; 
 and, should attendance be required, instead of call- 
 ing upon Brothers, as above provided, the Committee 
 shall employ a nurse, to be paid from the funds of 
 the Lod<2;e. 
 
 SECTION III.— FINANCE COMMITTEE. 
 
 Clause 1. — The Finance Committee shall consist 
 of three Members. 
 
 Clause 2. — It shall be the duty of this Committee 
 to superintend the financial affairs of the Lodge ; 
 to in.spect and report upon all accounts referred to 
 them by the Lodge, at the regidar meeting next 
 following the reference of such accounts ; and to 
 audit quarterly tiie accounts of the P. S. and Trea- 
 surer for the previous quarter, and of all other 
 Orticers or Committees charged with the receipt t>r 
 expenditure of monies of the Lodge. 
 
 SECTION IV.— PROPERTY COMMITTEE. 
 
 Clause 1. — Tlie Property Committee shall con- 
 sist of three Members, including the Warden, who 
 shall be Chairman thereof, ex officio. 
 
 Clause 2.— It shall be the duty of this Committee 
 to take charge of all Regalia and other effects of the 
 Lodge, not specially entrusted to particular Officers,

 or to other Committees ; to procure for the Lodge 
 such articles as may be necessary, or as the Lodge 
 may direct ; to cause to be made all such repairs to 
 the Regalia or other properties of the Lodge, as to 
 them may seem requisite, or as the Lodge may 
 direct ; and to make a full report of their proceedings 
 at the last meeting in each quarterly term. 
 
 Clause 3. — This Committee shall not in any case 
 expend a greater sum ihan Five Pounds during any 
 one quarterly term, without the previous consent of 
 the Lodge, signified in regular form. 
 
 Clause 4. — This Committee shall have power to 
 employ a Brother of the Order, of the Scarlet Degree, 
 at a rate of remuneration not to exceed Two Pounds 
 Ten Shillings per quarterly term, as Keeper of the 
 Regalia and other properties in their charge ; subject 
 always, however, to the approval of the Lodge. 
 
 SECTION v.— COMMITTEES ON CHARACTER. 
 
 It shall be the duty of all Committees on Charac- 
 ter, appointed under Article IL Section L Clause 2 
 of the Constitution, and in the manner laid down in 
 Article IIL Sections V. and VL of these Bye-Laws, 
 to ascertain carefully the age, state of health, pro- 
 fession, habits, and character of the Candidate 
 referred to them ; and to make special report thereon 
 to the Lodge, at the next regular meeting, unless 
 otherwise instructed by the Lodge. 
 
 SECTION VI.-DISCIIARGE FOR NEGLECT OF DUTY. 
 
 Clause 1. — Any Committee, or Member or Mem- 
 bers of a Committee, failing to discharge their duty

 Clause 2. — Every Committee, or Member or

 point, all books, papers, monies and other properties 
 of the Lodge, which may be in his or their hands. 
 
 ARTICLE V. 
 
 OF DUES AND FUNDS. 
 
 
 SECTION I.— ADMISSION FEES. 
 
 Clause 1.- -Every person admitted a Member of 
 this Lodge, either by initiation or as an Ancient 
 Odd Fellow, shall, previous to his admission, pay 
 into its funds an Admission Fee, to be established 
 according to the rule following, that is to say : — 
 
 If on his then last birth-day the Candidate was 
 not more than thirty years of age, the amount of the 
 said Fee shall be Three Pounds. 
 
 If on such last birth-day the Candidate was more 
 than thirty years of age, the said Fee shall be 
 augmented by the addition of a further sum of Five 
 Shillings for every year beyond that age. 
 
 Clause 2. — Every Brother admitted as a Member 
 of this Lodge by deposit of a Card from any other 
 Lodge, shall, previous to his admission, pay into its 
 funds an Admission Fee, to be established according 
 to the rule following, that is to say : —

 SECTION II.— QUARTERLY DUES. 
 
 Clause 1. — The regular Quarterly Contribution, 
 to be paid by every Brother of the Lodge 1" its funds, 
 shall be at the rate of Seven Shillings and Sixpence 
 per quarter ; and no Brother shall, on any account, 
 be excused from payment thereof. 
 
 Clause 2. — Such payment shall be considered 
 due at the close of each quarterly terra, except in 
 the cases following, that is to say : — 
 
 Firstly — Whenever any benefit shall accrue to the 
 account of a Brother, payment shall be required 
 therefrom of such proportion of his Quarterly Dnes as 
 may be chargeable at the close of the then current 
 week. 
 
 Secondly — Whenever any Brother shall take out a 
 Visiting Card, he shall be required to make pay- 
 ment, in advance, of all Quarterly Dues to become 
 chargeable to the close of the week in which the 
 term, for which such Card may have been granted, 
 shall end. 
 
 Thirdly — Whenever any Brother shall take out his 
 Card of Clearance at any time other than the com- 
 mencement of a quarter, he shall be required to

 SECTION III.— CHARGES FOR DEGREES. 
 
 Clause 1. — The Charges for Degrees in this Lodge, 
 on account of the Funds of the Lodge, shall be as 
 follows : — for the first, second, third, and fourth De- 
 grees, Five Shillings each, and for the fifth Degree, 
 Fifteen Shillings. 
 
 Clause 2. — The amount of such Charges, tnrrether 
 with the fees payable to the Degree Lodge, must be 
 deposited in the hands of the P.S. before any Brother 
 can be balloted for to obtain a Certificit^ entitling 
 him to receive ,such Degrees ; but shaii be returned 
 by the P.S.. should such Certificate be refused. 
 
 SECTION IV.— OTHER CHARGES. 
 
 Clause 1. — For every notice sent to a Brotlier in 
 arrears, under Article IIL Section VIILof these Bye- 
 Laws, the P.S. shall enter on his books, and add to 
 the amount to be stated by such notice as in arrear,

 Clause 3. — For every Visiting Card ami Card of

 Clause 4. — Such Charge must in all cases be de-

 under Article I. Sections V. and VI., and under Sec- 
 tion II. of this Article,) in the hands of the P. S., 
 before any motion can be made in Lodixe for the 
 granting of such Card ; but shall be returned by the

 SECTION v.— WIDOWS AND ORPHANS' FUND AND

 Clause 1. — There shall be two Funds of this 
 Lodge, — the Widows and Orphans' Fund, and the

 Clause 2. — There shall be carried to the account

 passing of these Bye-Laws, may be at the o -dit

 Secondly — One-fifth part of all Admission Fees 
 thereafter to be received.

 Fourthly — All Interest accruing from the invest- 
 ment of monies of the Lodge, all Fines collected,

 five Pounds to remain to the account of the said 
 Fund after such payment, then as nearly as may be 
 the whole amount of such benefit or benefits shall 
 forthwith be raised in aid thereof, and in like 
 manner. 
 
 Clause 2. — Whenever any benefit or benelits, to 
 an amount exceeding Twenty-five Pounds, may 
 have become due and payable from the General 
 Fund in the course of any one quarter, if the books 
 of the Lodge do not show a balance of as much as 
 Five Hundred Pounds to remain to the account of

 Clause 4. — Should the books of the Lodge, at the 
 close of any quarter, show the balance to the account 
 of the Widows and Orphans^ Fund to be less than 
 Two Hundred and Fifty Pounds, or that to the ac- 
 count of thfc: General Fund to be less than Five 
 Hundred Pounds, the Lodge may levy an equal As- 
 sessment on all the Brothers, in aid of either Fund, 
 or both, as the case may require : Provided always, 
 that due notice of motion to that effect have been 
 given at the regular meeting next preceding that at 
 which such motion shall be put to vote ; and also, 
 that such assessment do not exceed the amount of 
 Two Shillings and Sixpence for the former, and Five 
 Shillings for the latter, of the said Funds.

 SECTION VIL—INVESTMENT OF FUNDS. 
 
 Clause 1. — All investment of any monies of the 
 Lodge, which the Lodge may not deem it necessary 
 to keep in the immediate charge of the Treasurer to 
 meet its ordinary disbursements, shall be made 
 either in the Stock of .';o:ne Chartered Bank or Panks 
 of this City, or in some Public Stock of the Province, 
 or other Stock fully guaranteed by Act of the Parlia- 
 ment thereof. 
 
 Clausk 2. — All such investments, and all trans- 
 fers and sales thereof, or of any part thereof, sliall 
 be made in the name of the Lodge, from time to 
 time, as the Lodge may direct, by the N. G., V. G. 
 and Secretary for the time being, and under the Seal 
 of the Lodge ; all evidences or certificates thereof 
 shall be placed and kept by them on deposit in such 
 Chartered Bank of the City as they may select and 
 arrange with to that eifect, subject only to their joint 
 order, given under the Seal of the Lodge ; and all 
 dividends or other income accruing therefrom shall 
 be by them duly demanded and received, and the 
 amount forthwith paid over to the P. S. for delivery 
 to the Treasurer. 
 
 Clause 3. — All Monies of the Lodge, not invested 
 as aforesaid, shall be placed by the Treasurer, forth-

 with be issued by the Secretary, whenever he may 
 be called upon in writing so to do, by the N. G., V. G. 
 or Treasurer, or by any other thiee Brothers of the

 SECTION II.— BENEFIT IN CASE OF SICKNESS. 
 
 Clause I. — Every bond fide Member, not disquali- 
 fied under Article VII. of these Bye-Laws, ifrendered 
 incapable of follovvinij his usual occupation by sick- 
 ness or other disability, not proceedin*^ from im- 
 moral conduct on his part, shall receive a benelit 
 from the funds of the Lod:L;e, during such sickness or 
 disability, commencing not more than one week an- 
 terior to the dale at which the same shall have been 
 reported to the Lodge, unless otherwise ordered by 
 the Lodge, and at the rate following, that is to say : 
 
 If of the Scarlet Degree, One Pound Five Shil- 
 lings per Week. 
 
 If not of the Scarlet Degree, One Pound per 
 Week. 
 
 Clause 2. — If such Brother be resident, or if 
 his sickness or disability as aforesaid occur, at a 
 distance from Montreal, it shall be necessary that a 
 statement or statements of his case, setting forth the 
 nature of his sickness or disability, the time of its 
 commencement and its duration, be transmitted to 
 the N.G. of this Lodge, certified by the N.G. of the 
 Lodge nearest to the place where he may be for the 
 time resident or detained, and under the seal of such 
 Lodge ; or, if he be not near to any Lodge, by a Jus- 
 tice of the Peace, or Clergyman, or respectable Phy- 
 sician ; and such Brother shall thereupon receive the 
 benefit provided by the preceding Clause.

 shall rest with the Lodgy by vote to decide whether 
 or not the circumstances of the case are such as to 
 require the continuance of such benelit, during his 
 absence from Montreal. 
 
 SECTION III.— FUNERAL BENEFITS. 
 
 Clause 1. — On the decease of any bond fide Mem- 
 ber, not disqualified under yVrticle VII. of these 
 Bye-Laws, the sum of Twelve Pounds Ten Sliiliings 
 shall be allowed as a Funeral Benefit, to be disposed 
 of as provided by Article II. Section II. Clause 3 
 of the Constitution. 
 
 Clause 2. — On the decease of the Wife of any 
 Brother, (qualified as aforesaid, he shall receive from 
 the funds of the Lodge the sum of Six Pounds Five 
 Shillings, to assist in defraying the expenses of her 
 funeral. 
 
 SECTION IV.— BENEFITS TO WIDOWS AND ORPHANS. 
 
 Clause 1. — The Widow of every deceased bond 
 fide Member of this Lodge, not disqualified under 
 Article VII. of these Bye-Laws at the lime of his 
 decease, shall receive from the funds of the Lodge 
 the sum of Twelve Pounds Ten Shillings per An- 
 num, payable quarterly, during her widowhood. 
 
 Clause 2. — Should such deceased Brother leave 
 no Widow, or should his Widow afterwards die, the 
 said yearly sum of Twelve Pounds Ten Shillings 
 shall be paid in like manner for the benefit of his

 Orphan Child or Children, if any there be, under 
 the age of fifteen years; the interest of each such 
 child in such benefit ceasing as ho or she shall at-

 Clause 3. — Should circumstances require it, the 
 Lotlge may withdraw from the Widow of a deceaseil 
 Brother the benefit set forth inClause 1 of this Section, 
 to grant the same to his Orphan Child or Children, 
 under the provisos above set forth. 
 
 Clause 4. — Should the Widow of such deceased 
 Brother marry again, while any Child or Children 
 of such Brother shall still be under the age of fifteen 
 years, it shall be optional with the Lodge to grant 
 such benefit, or any part thereof, to such Child or 
 Children. 
 
 Clause 5. — Should the family of such deceased 
 Brother be in need of a protector or guardian, the 
 Lodge shall, to the best of its power, protect and as- 
 sist them, and endeavour to place them in such a 
 position as may enable them to be useful to them- 
 selves and to society. 
 
 SECTION v.— RELIEF IN SPECIAL CASES. 
 
 Clause ^. — Whenever it may become known to 
 the Lodge that atiy Brother of this Lodge has been 
 reduced to a «t«ie of pecuniary distress, by any sud- 
 den and UFilooked-f<ir dispensation, his case shall be 
 referred to a Special Committee of three Brothers,

 Clause 2. — Should a Brother from a distant Lodge 
 apply for relief, his case shall, on presentation of his 
 card, be referred to a Committoo of throe or more 
 P.G.'s, whose duty it sliull bo to examine into tho 
 same, and report to the Lodge whether any, and 
 what sum, in their opinion, should be granted for 
 his relief from tho funds of the Lodge ; and it shall 
 b(5 competent for the Lodge, by a voto of not less 
 than two-thirds of tho Brothers present, to grant him 
 any sum not exceeding such amount as may bo thus 
 recommended. 
 
 Clause 3. — Should the case of any such Brother 
 from a distant Lodge appear to tlie N.G. to be too 
 urgent to admit vil ih delay which a formal applica- 
 tion to the Lodge would occasion, it shall be compe-

 ARTICLE VII. 
 
 OF DISABILITIES, FINES AND PENALTIES. 
 
 SECTION I.-WHEN BROTHERS ARE NOT TO SPEAK OR 
 
 VOTE. 
 
 Clause 1. — No Brother shall be permitted to 
 speak or vote in Lodge on the night of his initiation. 
 
 Clause 2. — No Brother shall be permitted to 
 speak or vote in Lodge, if not in full Regalia apper- 
 taining to his rank. 
 
 Clause 3. — No Brother, while under Charires 
 duly preferred against him, shall be permitted to 
 speak in Lodge on any subject other than such 
 Charges ; nor to vote on any question whatever. 
 
 Clause 4. — No Brother, who may be more than 
 one calendar month in arrear for any Lodge Dues, 
 shall be permitted to speak or vote in Lodge until 
 such arrears be paid in full. 
 
 SECTION II.— WHEN BROTHERS ARE NOT ENTITLED TO 
 
 BENEFITS. 
 
 Clause 1. — No Brother shall be entitled to any 
 benefit during the first six calendar months after hia 
 admission, unless under special vote of the Lodge 
 to that effect. 
 
 Clause 2. — No Brother, while under Charges 
 duly preferred against him, shall be held entitled to 
 any benefit, unless under special vote of the Lodge 
 to that effect ; but if afterwards acquitted in due 
 course, such Brother shall be then forthwith entitled 
 to any benefit or benefits which, but for such

 Charges, might have become payable to him while 
 the same were pending. 
 
 Clause 3. — No Brother being two calendar 
 months in arrear for any Lodge Dues, shall become 
 entitled to any benefit, until six weeks after such 
 arrear shall have been paid in full, unless under 
 special vote of the Lodge to that effect. 
 
 Clause 4. — No Brother who may have been sus- 
 pended or expelled shall on any account become 
 entitled to any benefit, within the term of three ca- 
 lendar months after he shall have been re-instated. 
 
 SECTION III.— FINES. 
 
 Clause 1. — Every Brother offending against the 
 Rules of the Order, or of this Lodge, in respect of any 
 of the particulars hereinafter enumerated, shall be 
 fined as follows : — 
 
 For appearing in Lodge otherwise than in the JRe- 
 galia appertaining to his rank, One Shilling and 
 Threepence. 
 
 For failure to procure such Regalia within the 
 time prescribed by Article IL Section III. Clause 3 
 of these Bye-Laws, as often as the fact of such fail- 
 ure may come under the consideration of the Lodge, 
 One Shilling and Threepence. 
 
 For any improper language, offensive personality, 
 or other language such as is prohibited by the Rules 
 of the Order, or disrespect to any of the Officers of 
 the Lodge, while in Lodge, or disobedience to the 
 N.G. when called to order, not less than Two Shil- 
 lings and Sixpence, nor more than Ten Shillings, at

 the discretion of the N.G., or (if the Lodge see fit to 
 exercise it) of the Lodge. 
 
 For any failure to report the sickness of a Brother 
 of the Lodge, to the N.G. or to the Lodge, within 
 twenty- four hours, or as soon as may be practicable, 
 One Shilling and Threepence. 
 
 For any failure to watch with a sick Brother, 
 when regularly summoned so to do. Five Shillings. 
 
 For failure to report in writing to the Secretary 
 any change of residence, within two weeks. One 
 Shilling and Threepence ; and a further fine of Six- 
 pence for every week thereafter, during which such 
 failure may continue. 
 
 Clause 2. — Members of Committees, failing to 
 discharge any duties incumbent on them as such, 
 shall be fined as follows : — 
 
 If of the Visiting Committee, for every such failure. 
 Five Shillings. 
 
 If of a Committee on Character, One Shilling and 
 Threepence. 
 
 If of any other Committee, not less than One Shil- 
 ling and Threepence, nor more than Five Shillings, 
 for every such failure, at the discretion of the N.G., 
 or (if the Lodge see fit to exercise it) of the 
 Lodge. 
 
 Clause 3. — Any Ofiicer of the Lodge failing to 
 discharge his duties, shall be fined as follows : — 
 
 For absence from his proper station in the Lodge 
 at the time of opening, whether at a regular or spe- 
 cial meeting, if an elective Officer or the Junior

 P.G. of the term, Two Shillings and Sixpence ; if 
 holding any appointed Office, other than that of 
 Chaplain, One Shilling and Threepence. 
 
 If charged with any book or hooks of the Lodge, 
 and failing to have the same in Lodge at any meet- 
 ing, regular or special, a further fine of Two Shil- 
 lings and Sixpence. 
 
 If charged with any key or keys of the Lodge, the 
 want of which may deprive the Lodge of any books, 
 papers. Regalia, o)' other property, and failing to have 
 the same in Lodge at any meeting, regular or special, 
 a further fine of Five Shillings. 
 
 Clause 4. — All Fines incurred shall be forthwith 
 charged by the P.S. to the account of the Brother 
 'ncurring them ; and, unless remitted by vote of the 
 
 idge, on account of any circumstances which may 
 appear to the Lodge to warrant such remission, 
 shall become due and payable in all respects as 
 though they formed part of the regular Quarterly 
 Dues for the quarter during which they may have 
 been incurred. 
 
 SECTION IV. — PENALTIES — SUSPENSION AND EXPUL- 
 SION. 
 
 Clause 1. — Any Brother, being twelve calendar 
 months in arrear on the books of the P.S., shall 
 forthwith, upon due report thereof to the Lodge, be 
 declared by the N.G. to be suspended from Mem- 
 bership ; unless, on account of any special circum- 
 stances, the Lodge see fit by vote to grant a further 
 term for payment ; but such further term shall on 
 no account exceed three calendar months.

 Clause 2. — Any Brother, being eighteen calendar

 Clause 3. — Any Brother, guihy of language or 
 conduct in Lodge, meriting, in the opinion of the 
 Lodge, a severer penalty than the Fine above im- 
 posed or autliorised ; or who shall bring charges 
 against a Brother on evidence which the Lodge .shall 
 r;ot regard as suflicieni, to warrant him in so doing; 
 cr who shall knowingly misrepresent the qualifica- 
 tions of any candidate for admission ; or who shall 
 abuse, or attempt to abuse in any way, the benevo- 
 lent intentions of the Order ; or who shall be guilty 
 of fraud in any business transactions, or of other dis- 
 honourable conduct, or of habitual drunkeimess or 
 immorality, or of infraction of the laws of the land ; 
 shall be suspended from Membership, or expelled, 
 as the Lodge may by vote determine. 
 
 Clause 4. — No Brother shall be permitted to ap- 
 pear in Lodge while suspended from Membership ; 
 nor shall any sentence of Suspension be considered 
 to expire, or be reversed, unless by special vote of 
 the Lodge to that effect ; and no motion to that end 
 shall be put to vote more than once, in the case of 
 any individual, in any one quarterly term ; nor un- 
 less at a regular meeting, and after formal notice

 water, shall at any time be allowed in the Lodge 
 Room, or in any other apartment thereto belonging. 
 
 SECTION II.— FRATERNAL COURTESY. 
 
 It is particularly enjoined on all Brothers of the 
 Lodge, that they treat each other at all times with 
 due delicacy and respect ; and in particular, that all 
 their discussions in Lodge be conducted in a spirit 
 of candour, moderation, and generosity, and that all 
 personalities and sarcastic language be carefully 
 avoided 
 
 ARTICLE IX. 
 
 OF AMENDMENTS. 
 
 No motion to repeal, suspend, or amend these 
 Bye -Laws, or any part or parts thereof, shall be put 
 to vote, until the same shall have been read in Lodge

RULES OF ORDER. 
 
 Rule 1. — As soon as the Presiding Officer shall 
 have taken "^e Chair, Officers and Brothers shall 
 take their respective stations, and the Lodge shall 
 proceed to open in ancient form ; and after this, the 
 Order of procedure shall be as follow^s : 
 
 1. The Calling oi the Roil of Officers. 
 
 2. The consideration of any excuses which may 
 be offered by Absentees from previous Meetings. 
 
 3. The reading by the Secretary of the Minutes 
 of the last Lodge night ; the consideration of any ob- 
 jections which may be' made to any part thereof; 
 and their approval, with or without amendment, as 
 the case may require- 
 
 4. The receiving and consideration of any Re- 
 ports frorji the Visiting Committee ; or from other 
 Brothers who may have to report the fact of any 
 Brother being sick or in distress. 
 
 5. The Election of Officers, on the evenings de- 
 signated for such Election. 
 
 6. The receiving and consideration of Reports of 
 . Committees on Character, and balloting thereon. 
 
 7. The Initiation of Candidates for Membership. 
 
 8. The receiving of Propositions for Membership, 
 and their reference to Committees on Character. 
 
 9. The receiving and consideration of any Report 
 from the Junior P.G. as Guardiau of any Widows 
 and Orphans under the care of the Lodge.

 afterwards of any Special Committees, in the order

 12. The reading and consideration of Accounts 
 and other Communications in the hands of the Se- 
 cretary. 
 
 13. Good and Welfare : being, Jird, Unfmishod 
 Business, in order of priority on former Lodge nights j 
 and, secondly, New Business. 
 
 Rule IL — No motion shall be offered in Lodge 
 otherwise than in writing. 
 
 Rule IIL — No Question shall be put to the Lodge 
 by the N.G., unless regularly moved and seconded ; 
 nor be open for consideration until so put : and when 
 put, no other motion shall be receivable, unless it be 
 the motion 
 
 1. To adjourn, 
 
 2. To lay on the table, 
 
 3. To pui the previous question, 
 
 4. To postpone, 
 
 5. To refer, or 
 
 6. To amend ; 
 
 and these several motions, if made, shall have pre- 
 cedence in the order above stated; and the first, 
 second, and third thereof shall be decided without 
 debate.

 Rule IV. — The Motion for the Previous Question 
 shall only be put by the N.G. when made by nine 
 Brothers, and shall always be stated by him in 
 these words, " Shall the Main Question be now put ?" 
 and such Question shall forthwith be decided by the 
 vote of the majority of the Brothers present and vot- 
 ing; and, if carried in the affirmative, shall cut off 
 all amendments to the Main Motion, and all further 
 debate. 
 
 Rule V. — Any Brother may require the division 
 of a Question, when the sense will admit of it. 
 
 Rule VI. — When a blank is to be filled, the ques- 
 tion shall first be taken on the highest sum or num- 
 ber, or longest time, proposed. 
 
 Rule VII. — The Yeas and Nays shall be taken 
 and recorded, on the call of any Brother, duly se- 
 conded. 
 
 Rule VIII. — After any Question, except that of 
 indefinite postponement, may have been decided, 
 any two Brothers, having voted in the majority, may, 
 at the same or next meeting, move for a re-consider- 
 ation thereof; but no discussion of the Main Ques- 
 tion shall be allowed upon such motion. 
 
 Rule IX. — Every Brother of the Lodge shall have 
 the privilege of speaking twice on any question ; but 
 not oftener, unless by permission of the N.G. 
 
 Rule X. — Any Brother intending to speak on a 
 question, shall rise in his place and respectfully ad- 
 dress the N.G., confining himself to the question, and

 avoiding personalities ; and should more than one 
 Brother rise to speak at the same time, the N.G. 
 shall determine which is entitled to the floor. 
 
 Rule XL — The N.G., or .any Brother, may call a 
 Brother to Order while speaking; rid in such case 
 the debate shall forthwith be suspended, and the 
 Brother so called to Order shall not proceed, until the 
 tjoint of Order thus raised bo determined, nor speak 
 upon such point of Order, unless it be to make ne- 
 cessary explanation, or appeal from the decision of 
 the Chair. 
 
 Rule XII. — In all cases where a Brother may ap- 
 peal from any decision of the Chair, he shall use the 
 words following and none other, unless it be for ne- 
 cessary explanation, " M.N., I respectfully appeal from 
 the decisionofthe Chair to the Lodge " ; and the Lodge 
 sliall thereupon proceed forthwith to consider and 
 vote upon the question, " Will the Lodge sustain the 
 decision of the Chair ?" 
 
 Rule XIII. — Any Brother, who may have been 
 called to Order for manifestation of temper or im- 
 proper feeling, must apologise to the Lodge or to any 
 aggrieved party, if required so to do by the N.G. ; and 
 shall not speak again on the pending question, ex- 
 cept to explain or apologise, unless specially permit- 
 ted so to do by the N.G. 
 
 Rule XlV. — The N.G,, or the Lodge, may at any 
 time require all Brothers present to vote upon any 
 pending question ; or may excuse any Brother or 
 Brothers from so doing.

 Rule XV. — No Brothnr shall retire, during a 
 meeting of the Lodge, without the permission of the 
 N.G. 
 
 Rule XVI. — No motion for the repeal or amend- 
 ment of these Rules of Order, or any of them, shall 
 be put to vote, unless after observance of the forma- 
 lities required by Article IX. of the Bye-Laws, for 
 the repeal or amendment of a Bye-Law ; nor be de- 
 clared carried by a vote of less than two-thirds of the 
 Brothers present and voting thereon. 
 
 Rule XVII. — A motion to suspend any of these 
 Rules of Order for the remainder of a meeting, may 
 at any time be carrif^l by a unanimous vote, or, if 
 as many as twelve IJrothers call upon the Lodge to 
 sustain it, by a vote of not less than two-thirds of the 
 Brothers present and voting thereon ; but no motion 
 to suspend any Rule of Order for a longer term, shall 
 at any time be put to vote.

 Section VI. — The Representatives of Suboi .linate Lodges 
 shall be chosen from among the Past Grands, who are in 
 Membership thereof, by ballot, to serve for the *.crm of one 
 year, commencing on the day appointed for nolding ilie 
 Annual Communication, and ending on the day preceding 
 the next Annual Communication. A Past Grand, under 
 a charge or suspension in his Subordinate Lodge, lUii 1 
 not be eligible, nor entitled to a seat in the Grand L./dgo, 
 until such time as the charge or suspension is determined. 
 — The election of Representatives to take place annually, 
 at the last meeting in .Tune, and to consist of such number 
 as the Lodge may determine. Subordinate Lodges may 
 at any time elect from among their Past Grands additional 
 Representatives to serve until the next Annual Election, 
 who shall be admissible to this Grand Lodge at its next 
 Quarterly Meeting, if approved. 
 
 Section VIL — The Representatives oC a': -5 Lodge which 
 has reported fifty or more contributing Members, shall be 
 entitled to two votes, and one vote for every additional 
 twenty-five Members ; each Lodge which has reported a 
 less number, one vote — when ^ut^stions are determined by

 VII. Resolved, — That no public celebration of any kind 
 shall be permitted to be holden in this Province by Lodges 
 under the jurisdiction of this Grand Lodge, without permis- 
 sion having been first obtained from the R.W. Grand Lodge. 
 
 VIII. Resolved, — That no ball or public amusement 
 shall be got up in the name of the Order in this Province, 
 without the consent of the Grand Lodge. 
 
 X. Resolved, — That the Officers and Members of the 
 Subordinate Lodges working under this jurisdiction be, 
 and are hereby, directed to enter into no controversy, 
 through the public prints, or publish any matter in the form 
 of orations and addresses connected with the Order, with- 
 out the permission of this Grand Lodge. 
 
 XL Resolved, — That no motion or application for hav- 
 ing processions be entertained by this Grand Lodge, unless 
 ' presented from a majority of Lodges in the vicinity where 
 the said procession is to be holden. 
 
 XX. Resolved, — That a Lodge has not authority to 
 withdraw its Representative or Representatives as Mem- 
 bers of the Grand Lodge. 
 
 XXIII. Resolved, — That no petition for a Charter for 
 a Subordinate Lodge shall be entertained in this Grand 
 Lodge, unless accompanied by the Cards of the Petitioners, 
 or the Certificate of the D. D. G. M. of the District in
