Ulex, Esq., of Hamburg, to whom I am indebted for the following information respecting it : ** Hearing that a Canadian coin of 1 670 was to be sold, I wrote to asctrtain what proofs existed as to its genuineness, and received the following reply : ' The coin referred to is based on the work of Leblanc, living at the time the coin was made. In his work ' Traits historique des monnayes de Frar.ce, 169-2,' he says, page 304, ' To facilitate commerce in Canada, the King (Louis XI V.J caused to be prepared 190,000 pounds of 15. 5 and 2 sols, (the latter of pure copper.) This money was to be of the same weight, as that of France. On the silver l.i and 5 sols, instead of ' Sit nomen Domioi Benedictum,' there was ' Gloriam regni tui Dicent,' and on the 2 sols ' Doubles de I'Amerique Francaise.' Combrouse in his Catalogue of the N.itional Money of France, (Paris 1839;, under Local Moneys, says: 201 — Canada — 'ihere was made of silver coins 100,000 llvres in 165S. — Lablanc.
