The present seems a fitting ojtportunity to prepare a brief resume of the history of this idea of printing the gestures of the Indinns' Si^n Lan^un^e i7h such order that Indians who know the si^ns nii^ht heeome readers of si^ns, and in the hope, if readers, the si>ins eould he utilized as a means of educating the adult elass in any matter that eould be explained in their sign language. Having lired nearly all m'f life in rontaet with Indians, I hare noticed their liahit of gesturing in their coniniunications between themselves, and when talking to whites; but it did not occur to me that their gestures meant any more than tfwse of some ivhitc men u'ho throw their arms about like the sails of a crazy old wind mill n-ithout thought of method, or of conveying any idea whatever. Jiut, when the Smit/isonian Institution asked eolleetorsof Indian matters to take notice of signs and make it a /lart of their work, I began to believe there might be .something in it, and when in 1 880 the Bureau of Eth- nology issued its volnm.inoa^ report on this, and other matters. I became fully interested and determined to ilrop the collertion of Indian uu>rds and devote myself to the investigation of the gestures called Sign Talk. Skipping the years of di/ficuity incipient to many new investigations, I came to the point where f saw I must abandon the rules laid down for guid- ance in representing signs as btin^ needlessly burdensome, and another ftlan occurring to my mind which ]tvomised better results, I adopted the idea generally observed in this work. All Imlian gestures have some essential position, and my effort has been to learn that position and to make a diagram of it, showing mtwement by a dotted line to or from that essential position. 1 also usually represented the position as seen while making the signs with my own hands. The result was a diagram so plain, that the Indian himself could read it as soon as he learned the me of the dotted line sluxving the movement. When J realized that, T redoubled my efforts, believing they could be utilized as a means of enlightenment to all sign talk- ing tribes, especially to .inch as had passed .school age. How well my part of this work has been done, I leave for interested parties to decide. I could fill several pages with interesting matter concerning the .struggle from this point of conceiving of tlie idea and its accomplishment; the years of privation be- fore receiving any assi-stantse front others, but I forbear. ^JS=3^iSBiiiS^^ ^g&=i5t™¥j^tp5J^ » i * ••# >\ '.V V ® ® <^ ® a INDIAN SKIN TALK , If'li V hiiritiJi si iirrs ir/iilr ijil ornoriQ' t/ie Jnfliiiiif. /iriiiliiii^ niiiitiiit ri'/iii s n/' GB^ mfs rm/i trilJi n ptifiir kiiij'r, I irritiiiij tin ir niii'i'iiliiits iiith II jiiii K I smr tliri/ irvrr rutin lij Ino /orQ'i' mill till) fiiHtrlf/ i.vii iili it Id hi n iiii /inn tii nl, nrinrr/itnlilc Thenfnn\ J ili trnniin il to ti i/ to finil /'n'rtnls irhn nmlil fiivnish tlw in i huh It'll He I rimlil tin lirftrr ivnrk. AND SERVE AS A MEDIUM OF COMMU- NICATION BETWEEN MEN OF DIFFERENT PROVINCES AND DIALECTS WHO COULD NOT POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND THE SPOKEN LANGUAGE OF EACH OTHER. FOR INSTANCE. A LAWSUIT IS ALWAYS REPRESEN- TED BY A PICTURE WHICH TO THE CHINESE MIND REPRESENTS TWO DOGS FIGHTING, AND ALL MEN UNDER- STAND THAT WMITTliN OR PRINTED CHARACTER FROM Oi»4E END OF THE CELESTIAL EMPIRE TO THE OTHER. ALTHOUGH EACH MIGHT HAVE A DIFFERENT WORD OR PHRASE TO EXPRESS IT. THE SCRPTURES PRINTED IN THE ORDINARY CHINESE COULD IF CIRCULATED BE READ GENERALLY. ALTHOUGH THE MISSIONARY GOING FROM ONE PROVINCE TO ANOTHER COULD NOT PREACH SO AS TO BE UNDERSTOOD. THIS ILLUSTRATES THE WAY IN WHICH THESE CARDS WILL CONVEY GOSPEL LESSONS TO WIDELY SEPARA- TED TRIBES OF INDIANS WHO ARE .-AMILLIAP WITH THEIR ALMOST UNIVERSAL SIGN LANGUAGE.
