SECRETARY: Ernest Burns, I JO Puwcll St., Van. tourer. STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES ADOPTED AT VANCOUVER OCTOBER 3rd, 1901, 'TpHE Socialist Party of B. C, in con- vention asseiubletl, reafflrms* its ad- herence to the principles of Interna- tional Socialism, and declares itsaitn to bothe organization of the working class, and those in sympathy with it, into a political party, with the object of con- quering the powers of government and using them for the purpose of trans- forming the present system of private ownership of the means of production and distribution into collective owner- ship by the entire people. Formerly the tools of production were simple and owned by the indivi- dual worker. To-day the machine, which is an improved and more devel- oped tool of production, is owned ^ v the capitalists and not by the worke . This ownership enables the capitalists to control the product and keep the wttrkers dependent upon them. Private ownership of the means of production and distribution is respon- sible lor the ever increasing unccrtain- ity of livelihood and poverty and misery of the working class, and it divides so- ciety in two hostile classes— the capital- ists and wage - workers. The once powerful middle class is rapidly disap- pearing in the mill of competition. The struggle is now between the capi- talist class and th« working class. The possession of the means of livelihood gives to the capitaliste the control of the governmf t, the press, the pulpit and schools, and enables them to reduce the workingmen to a state of intellec- tual, physical and social inferiority, po- litical subservience and virtual slavery. The economic interests of the capi- talist class dominate our entire social system; the lives of the working class are recklessly sacrificed for profit, war* (f .# art) fomonU'd between .latlont, indis- orimiimtti 8liiii},'htcr is t>iic<»iiraj;'jil un^ tli»! Hut the sanie rfonomic causes \rliich developed capitalism aie leaciinj,' to fii- cialirtiP, wliich will aholisli both tie eapitalist ela-.s ami the vAin^-, of waire- workers. And the active force in brinyin^' about this new j.nd lil-:her order of society is the vvorkinj; claims. All other classes, de.-pite their ajipar- ent or actual contliiUs, are alike inter- ested in the upholding,'- of the tsystcti! of private ownership of the inslrunients of wealth prtduction. The Libeial, Conservative, the bourjjetjis Public Ownership parties, and all other par- ties which do not stand for the eomi)lete overthrow of the capitalist system of production, are alike oolitical lepre- sentatives of the capital iHt class. The workers can most effectively act as a class in their stru'ri?le against the cuUective power.s of capitalism, by con- 8titutin«> themselves into a political party, distinct fiom and opjtosed to all parties formed by the propertied clasr-es. Wliile we declare that the develop- ment of economic conditions tends to the overthrow of the capitalist system, we recojjnize that the time am; manner of the transition of Socialism also de- pend upon th(! stii;;' of developmont reached by tlio j>i'"I<;.i-ia;.
