The Archaeological Section has had a careful overhauling |-nd the specimens and articles are now secured in more con- venient show cases. The Library has been very fairly arr.iuged by the librarian, |)Iiss Horsraan, who took an intelligent interest in the work. A notable addition to the library ha.-.- been a copy of the |3ible in the Tukudh language, translated by Ven. Archdeacon I'IcDonald, honorary member of the society. There were seven executive meetings during the season, ;t which an average of six members were present. An addition of ten more institutions with which this "Xiety exchanges brings up the total of exchanges to 161. Of newspapers there has been an addition of twelve, :aking a total of 1 1 1 for the year. These papers are placed |.i the lil)rary reading rooms and are free to the public. The society records the death of Sir William Dawson, one ;: its most distinguished honorary members, and of Mr. rseph Fortescue, of the Hudson's Bay Co., whose obituary |:otice.s will be found elsewhere. Two papers were read before the society, one by Mr. G. I*. Fonseca and the other by Rev. W. A. Burman, the resident. These form Nos. This Society desires to express its sorrow at the death of one of the most distinguished of its Honorary Members, Sir William Dawson, C. M. G. Sir William Dawson had reached the ripe age of 79, hav ing been Principal of McGill College for 38 years, retiring i 1893, and passing away Nov. 19th, 1899. Noted in his native Province of Nova Scotia as a co worker of Sir Chas. Lyell, as a practical Geologist and a pro minent Educationist, Sir William on his removal to Mont real maintained his place as a leader in Canadian Science and] became a prolific writer of scientific works. A member of many learned societies. Sir William was! the first President of the Royal Society of Canada, and \va: also President of the British Association and of the America Association for the Advancement of Science. This Society records its sense of the great loss to Canad; and the scientific world of so distinguished a man, but recog nizes that his true value to the country will be still preservei in the work he has done, the books he has written and thi lives he has influenced. JOSEPH FORTESCUE Was born in Dawlish, Devonshire, England, in 18oo. He was the eldest son of an English Judge. Your Library Committee begs to report that its work of :i;iig to the vSociety's Collection of North West and Refer- :e Books and of making these stores more accessible to ;:dents went on during the past year in a satisfactory man- :. The early part of the year was devoted to completing a :;eof work which was begun during 1878. This was the "ccting, classifying, and l)inding of upwards of a hundred '.r.nies of pamphlets and typical Western newspapers. The .■,;;ncs of pamphlets which were bound, have now been [iexed and their contents made as easy of reference as pos- '.e. The purchase of books bearing upon the country west bke Superior has continued to receive attention, especial- ■.hc purchase of scarce and out of print volumes, such as tnot easily obtainable by the private collector. The number of bound volumes thus added to the Library ':c course of 18'.)'.) was 107. The most important sets purchased was Bancroft's History ■he Pacific Coast States (o9 Vols.) and the volumes thus rublished in the new translation of the Jesuit Relations Vols.). REPORT OF THE JOINT LIBRARY COMMIT During the past year the City Library has been conduct^ with considerable success. PORT OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMMITTEE. Winnipeg, Jan. 2r)th, 1900. ■k Ptcsident and Members of the Historical and Scientific Society of Manitoba. I Your Archaeological and Scientific Committee have Hire ill reporting a very satisfactory year in connection [• the departments under its charge. We feel that the |*iiin and collections of the Society are now in a much -atisfactory condition than ever before. ^! 12 Since our last report an entire change in arrangement o^ the show cases has been made. This was rendered necessary by the removal of the C1I5 engineer's department into the rooms in the nortlivvcst cnrnei^ of the building formerly occupied by us. Our acccjiiinioda-l tion being : ow entirely inadequate, the city council kindl consented to close up the unused staircase on the north .sidg and to put in a false floor at its head. The accommodation being still very confined it was found necessary to have new and improved cabinets constructfil, a^ well also to remodel a number of old cases. Those of ikJ further service to us to the number of twelve have been dis^ posed of by your committee to the industrial exhilMtion. In this manner a very satisfactory solution of the (|uestioii of adequate space has been attained, and the specimens of ili^ society are now much more easy of access and more open t(j inspection than had formerly been the ca.se. Your committee still further contemplates the construclii)n of a special cabinet for the reception of the fine collection ol botanical specimens in its possession. The additions throngliJ out the year have not been very numerous, though seviraj very interesting objects have been added, amongst tliiiij being : Rev. A. Sylva White — Relic of the dynamite explo-ioii a\ Whitehall, Eng., in 18S8. Mrs. Livingstone — Old iron lamp. Mr. W. A. Corbett, B. A. — Pottery unearthed in the u Roman village of Uriconium, now Wroxester, Hug. Dr. E. A. Blakeley — Photograph of the members of I'or Garry Lodge L O. G. T. of I.STO-IH'JS. Mr, C. H. Royal, M. A. — Collection of old map.s. Mr. Ba.sil Hamilton — Three steel dies from old Hudson's llaj post at Machipicoton ; life preserver of tin '"••'nerl\ ij use by Hudson's Bay Co.; Indian stone pipe. Mr. Basil Hamilton's collection of coins and of nunit-ro;^ articles of interest still remain with us, and it is now- posed by him to make the same a permanent loan to till society. This it is hoped will be done. in arrangement o^ nioval of the cilj : nortliwest corneil Our accommoda-l ity council kindlj on the north sidej ifined it was found .ets constructed, a^ ses.
