N. B. The whole of the Society's motiey is not at interest and there are some other losses and expenses, all of which ouf^ht to be deducted from the amount of the principal and interest, according to tiic above Table. But on the supposi- tion of this Table being perfectly correct, and that it were pos- sible to obtain interest for sums paid in the manner the contri- butions to the Society are paid, the amount which any Mem- ber, or his family, draws from the Society more than he would be entitled to for the number of years he has been in It according to this Table, is a benevolence of the Society which it is solely enabled to grant, by the generosity of those Members and their families who do not conceive that their cir- cumstances require the relief afforded by the Society. It is upon the conviction that the Society has not the means to grant the high allowances which it does,' if every Member and his family were to demand thei. , that it is provided in the Rules, that some allowances shall b>; made, only "while the income exceeds the expenditure;" the Society wishing to extend its relief to the help- less widows and children of deceased Members, to the utmost oi its means.
