They are so constructed that the ladders can be released at a moment's notice, and when not in use can be thrown up, leaving only the ornamental balconies in view. The balconies can be made any length, and will hold as many as can stand on them. The ladders are always ready for use, affording a safe and easy method of escape from burning buildings. It furnishes the Fire Department convenient access to all parts of the building, and by means of the stand- pipe water can be quickly conveyed to any storey or the roof without the delay of raising ladders and liability of hose breaking. licsides the great protection to property, the combined stand-pipe and balcunies in mobt places rcdure the Insurance ten per cent, thus soon saving their cost in In&urance. On Asylums or Reform Schools where the windows are guarded, the guards are so ar- ranged that they can be unfastened when the ladders are let down, and securely locked when they are up. Electric Bells can be attached, and the releasing entirely under the control of the officials in any part of the building They can be made ornamental as well as useful for private dwellings. ,'ii.ii.'i.'||.'"i.'ii,'it.'ii,i„%,ti,'ii.i,i'(,i'i."(."(.«t,'ti."»i.N.'i.i'i.'>i,''.,'i •i..H,i'i.i't.'>h • TESTIA\0NIALS. Batten has placed upon the Soldiers' Orphans' Home in this city four of his Improved Balcony Fire Escapes, which are decidedly the best and most complete of any I hav.- seen, and 1 desire to recommend the same. J. W. ROSS, Arcliitect. To PnTSBURGH Fire Department. W/iom it May Concern: We take pleasure in testifying to the advantages of the Batten Patent Balcony Fire Escape over everything we have come across in our experience in the fire department. During the Treat lire in the rear of the Seventh Avenue Hotel in this city we were very materially aided by using the above balconies and ladders, which are at all times ready at a moment's notice. They were tested to the utmost by the use the firemen made of them with their hose, &c. ; and we cheerfully recoinmend them on all high buildings. SAMUEL EVANS, Chief Engineer P. F D. JOHN STEEL, Assistant Chief. Am.F, Oi'KKA Housr, K\sroN, Pa. lo Whom it May Conttrn: Thii is to certify that Mr. Battln has just put in place on our Opera House a Bativn Patent Fire Escape. It is perfectly saii^faciury in every respect, being strong, light in appear- ance and perfect in construction. Alter inquiring into the merits of several makes, the contract was given to the above lumed firm, and I have no hesitation in saying the Batten Patent is the best. I cannot too highly recommend it to a!' wanting a faultless fire escape. [Signed,] WM. M. SHULTZ, March i?. 1887. M'gr Able Opera House, Kaston, Pn. Approved by J. J. Smith, Chief Fire l>cj)artment, £i.ston, Pa. They are recommended by the Ch'cf ICngincer of Cleveland and principal architects ; als 1 the Fire Marshal, Chief and Assistant Chief ICngineer A. F. D., architects, &c., of Pittshurgli. Pa., Easton, Pa., and the architects ot New York and Philadelphia. WiLLiAMsi'ORT, Pa., June 14th, 1887. The Batten Patent Fire Escapes two of which have been erected on our Seminary fliiild- ing, were examined and accepted yesterday by the Executive Committee, and examined and approved by the County Commissioners to-day. Both the Committee and the Commissioners expressed entire satisfaction with the work, regarding the device, also as the best that has been presented in this city, meeting all the requirements of the law, and at the same time, providing a safe and easy mode of esca|)e in case of fire. It seems to me that nothing better can be desired. It meets my hearty approval and I think must commend itself when safety and rapid egress are desired. EDVVAKD J.
