SiMcoE, twenty-eighth February, 1844. 3262 II 61 Account ov the District or Taibot fbom T, 1843, to 81st Decbmser, 1843. 2, ...... 797 lO Hi f Windham. I84'3 72 l4 3i (Carried forward,) It is curious to witness tho sudden change in the political creed of tho to- ries ; from opposition, from '« war to the knife," to use Mr. Draper's emphatic expression, to the support of responsible government. As is usual in such cases they outstep reasonable bounds, & jump from one extreme to the other. Until within the last three months, it was, in their view, next to high treason for re- formers to advocate Justice or Constitu* tionality, and there was no epithet in their vocabulary too bad or too infamous which the Reformers did not in their o- pinion, justly merit. But now the scene has changed, Sir Charles Metcalfe has said " presto," and lo, we see the whole tory party suddenly exclaiming — Responsible Government, for which Reformers ever contended and at length won, can or will work satisfac- torily in Canada-^and so now say the tories. Whilst therefore we ought rather to rejoico in this addition to our strength, nominal though it be, we must not de- ceive ourselves by ascribing sincerity to these ■-' derations, nor must we suppose for oii6 I .oment that the tories really do mean what they pretend to profess and would wish U3 believe. Depend upon it they are playing a deep game *-"i*h us, and whilst they would lull our suspicions by the apparent advocacy of Responsible government, they will at the same lime wrest it from us. They see that the great mass of the people are determined to enjoy civil and religijus freedom, and icy llicrciuio iviIutt lllal •» ,."«... ., — folly in them to attempt) by an honest party opposition, to pr rmit its full intro- diictron and operation. At the same time one great point has been gained by the Reformers ; for what- ever may be the objects and intentions of the tories, they have now forever pre- cluded themselves from the benefit of openly opposing Responsible Govern- ment. They have bound their party to it by acknowledging its juftice and neces* sity, and the only hope which they now can possess for its overthrow, lies in de. ccption and fraud. I think it scarcely necessary for me to say that in this they will fail. To succeed they would require to have to deal with ignorance or inactivity, but inasmuch as neither of these qualities distinguish the people of Canada, so therefore will their plans and intentions assuredly be frustrated. It might at one time in our history have been a compar- atively easy task for them to have im- posed upon the people, but it will be ex- ceedingly difficult now, in fact impossi- ble. There is too much intelligence and independence and real patriotism spread abroad, to allow of even a hope of such a result. The dread of past evils and sufferings is too vivid in the mind of every inhabitant among us to permit even one man to be led astray from the path of rectitude and honor. The duty which the people owe not only to themselves, but to succeeding genera- tions is so obvious, and is so strongly re- cognised that whoever attempts to wea- ken it, or otherwise render it less bind- ing, cannot fail of meriting overwhelm- ing disgrace. It would take twenty five years Rnd four months to count out in sovereigns the amount of the National Debt of Ej^g- land, counting at the rate of siitjr per minute, or ono every second ! \ i
