Weldon Library University of Western Ontario (Regional History Room) Tne images appearing here are the best quality possible considering the condition and legibility of the original copy and in keeping with the filming contract specifications. Original copies in printed paper covers are filmed beginning with the front cover and ending on the last page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, or the back cover when appropriate. All other original copies are filmed beginning on the first page with a printed or illustrated impres- sion, and ending on the last page w?th a printed or illustrated impression. The last recorded frame on each microfiche shall contain the symbol —»■( meaning "CON- TINUED"), or the symbol V (meaning "END"), whichever applies. Maps, plates, charts, etc., may be filmed at different reduction ratios. Those too large to be entirely included in one exposure are filmed beginning in the upper left hand corner, left to right and top to bottom, as many frames as required. Winona, April ist, 1893. oireotion8 for carino for and Planting • Nursery • Stock :ON RECEIVINQ IT. » <»» » NDO the bundles and moisten the roots if dry, on receiving the stock, then dig a trench in the most mellow soil convenient and stand the trees or bushes upright in it, throwing moist and mellow soil around the roots as though you were planting the trees permanently. Be sure all interstices are filled up, so as to exclude the air. A great many trees are killed by drying out of the roots in the heeling in ground, which is totally uncalled for. NOW WHEN READY TO PLANT dig holes at least six inches larger than necessary to spread out all roots fully and about a foot deep. Fill in the bottom with mellow surface soil, leaving the hole just deep enough so that when the tree is planted it will stand about as it did when in the Nursery — say six to ten inches deep. Pear trees require deeper holes than other trees, a foot deep is generally not too deep for them. Now trim off all broken or bruised roots with sharp knife and cut back the top about two-thirds, set the tree in the hole and fill in with the best mellow earth, but no manure, pack the earth tight among and around the roots and tramp well until near the top, then finish up with loose earth — not tramped. It is well when the tree is about half planted to pour in a pail of water if the soil is not moist. It is a good plan to cover the ground around the tree as soon as planted with a mulch of manure, rotten wood or even straw, this keeps the sun from drying out the ground, and will admit the rain. If this is not done the ground around the trees should be hoed at intervals during the summer, to keep it mellow and free from weeds. These remarks apply equally to currants, gooseberries, and grapevines, as well as trees — except evergreens, the tops of these of course must be left on as received, unless for hedges. Trusting, that by following these simple directions you may lose none of the plants bought of me this year, and that you may want more another season. I am, yours respectfully, E. D. SMITH.
