"^% ^MA*' * -* " ^ r .ufNi lawMfiWH^ S3pf \l ORONTO was founded by Governor Simcoe in 1794 and was given the name of York, by which I title it was known until its incorporation as a city in 1834, when it received the Iroquois name it ^ now bears as the capital city of the Province of Ontario. At that date its population numbered less than ten thousand, but the energy and public spirit of her people fostered a phenominal growth, and the present population is estimated at 175,000. Beautifully situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, surrounded with lovely natural scenery, ornamented with charming public parks, with broad shady streets, elegant substantial buildings, im- portant educational institutions, and hundreds of houses of worship, Toronto is more than ordinarily attractive and may duly lay claim to the title of " The Queen City of Canada." The climate, tempered by the breezes of Lake Ontario, is salubrious and delightful, and renders Toronto an excellent resort in summer. The bay is protected by the island from heavy currents and has become a great meeting place for all kinds of acquatic sports. Many steamers and ferryboats ply between the city and the parks and groves in the vicinity, notably Hanlon's Point, the people's resort. Lome Park is about fourteen miles west of the city, a delightful piece of woodland. Steamers make frequent trips to it, as also to Long Branch, Victoria Park, and the Humber River. High Park lies at the western terminus of the Queen Street car line, while Queen's Park, Horticultural Gatdens and other breathing spots are found in the heart of the city. As recently as ten years ago Toronto was far more distinguished as a literary and educational centre than for manufactures. Upon the adoption by tlie Canadian Government of a policy of protection in 1878, an era of industrial activity however set in, which soon made Toronto an important seat of manufacture. Her shrewd merchants and capitalists had before this tapped the more recently settled and growing regions northeast and northwest of the city by narrow -guage railways, which have largely added to the trade and, together with the great trunk lines, have made Toronto one of the great railway centres of the continent. t m i p»i^i*ii < iJaMFi M »' / f n ,^ »i» ii i - tfur nr-»rspfl»;ry(^J^5W •' Toronto and Lake Ontario from Canada Life Assurance Go's.
