THE LuNDv's Lane Historical Society will publish during * the present year, 1896, an important and interesting - historical work, entitled, " The Annals of Niagara," fron. Jie pen of William Kirby, F. R. S. C, the well-known author of "The Chien d'Or," "Canadian Idylls," and other works. Of its literary value we need only say that he is the auihor of it, and its histori- cal value is guaranteed by the author's extensive knowledge of Canadian History, and by his long residence of over fifty years in ' the town who^e annals he records. The book will form an octavo volume of about 250 pages, and will be sold by the Lundy's Lane Historical Society at the price of $1.00 per volume, bound in cloth with gilt lettering on back; or .bound in stilT paper, 75 cents. The old town of iMiagara, situated on the point of land where the River Niagara flows into Lake Ontario, has a record of history beyond that of almost any town in North America. Its beginnings are lost in the mists of antiquity. The rela- tions of the Jesuit Missionaries, written in 1640, tell of the old Indian town of Onghiara, the principal town of the l(,st nation of the Neutrals, who had lived here from time unknown, when they were visited by the missionaries of the Jesuits. Onghiara was the pre- decessor of Niagara, on the site of the present town. Nearly fifty years after its discovery it was visited by the famous explorer La Salle, who built a trading post on the present site of Fort Niagara. This country remained under the government of France until 1759, when Fort Niagara was besieged and taken by General Prideaux, who fell in the siege, and by Sir William Johnston, his second in conmiand. Thai siege was a most memorable event in American history. Its possession by the English until .796 ^"^ the events that occurred there during the war of the Revolution form a distinct period of deep romantic interest. Then came the memorable settle.nent of Niagara by the United Empire Loyalists, who left the old colonies to live under the British flag, by whom the town of Niagara was again founded in 1 783. 'rhe history of that town, which in .792 received the name of Newark from Gov- ernor Simcoe, is of great interest to the whole Province as the seat of Government and Legislation for some years, and the principal place for commerce in Upper Canada. The war of .8. 2 led to its utter destruction. It was burnt down by the enemy on their flight from this frontier in December, 18.3. Us rebuilding after the war, under its restored name of Niagara, and the many subsequent events which have occurred here, are subjects of much interest. That history has never yet been written, but will be found recorded in these Annals. It is indeed " A story worth the telling, and If told In simplK truth, will shine, like burnished gold." I I 1 I In order to assist the Lundy's Lane Historical Society in venturing upon this new publication, will you kindly subscribe for one or more copies ?
