It is the privilege of membera of an association of early pioneers to be, if
they please, aiitolnitgraphic, now and then, in their eoniniunioations with each
othei . In fact, to render complete the record of the large folio llegister of our
Society, in the custody of its secretary, we are all of us bound to be some-
what autobiographic. I df) not scruple therefore at once to explain liow the
collection of vohimes this year displayed on our Log shanty Bor)k-8h(?lf, came
to be formed. 1 was born in T)evi»nshire, and althoiij^h leaving )t at ijuito an
early age, 1 was still old enough to bring away with me very strong impressions
of that county ; old enough to be inspiretl with a curious interest in its customs
and traditions, and a <legree of pride in its great historical renown. Hence
from an early period, began with me the practice of lioarding up such chance
publications us came in my way, having for sul)ject-iuatter Devon its bordering
counties, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset ; and in turiung over the pages of
these works I was wont to lind at leisure moments no small amount of enjoy-
ment. {The Log-shanty Book-shelf of last year also originated in a oomewhat
similar way, but its aim was difl'erent : that was the outcome of a young c*mi-
grant's yearning after mental improvement and self-education under the poorly
pr(»vided literary circumstances of the country at the time.)

A portion of the province of Ontario situated si^mewhere between Stratford
and (joderich, used to l)e known a few years ago as the Devonshire settleuumt,
 from the number of west country English folk who had there taken up land ;
hence the ( ^anadian Exeter now nourishing thereabou<^.s, the (Canadian Tiverton,
and perhaps other villages aiul haudets distinguished by Devonshire names.
However it was not in that (juarter that ray experience as a youthful Canaditan
immigrant was accjuired. My father'.^ "h)cation" was lot number tifteen, iirst
 concession from the Hay, broken front, in the Tpper Canadian Cimnty of York ;
the great thoi-oughfare ,now'kut)wn ius iJroadview Avenue within the limits of

It will be observed that interest wtvs taken not only in matters and persons
connected with modern Devonshire and the sister counties of ('ornwall, .Somer-
set and Dorset iiut also in the anticpiities of the.s.vid counties. It will be seen
likewise that some attention was given lo the dialects of the same region.

Let now the intellig^iut emigrant from other parts of the United Kingdom go
li'd <lo likewise. 'I'here is scarcely a nook or corner of the Fatherlaiod that
i>. <J8 not teem with memories and traditions, or fascinate by sonu' subtle charm
.tf n.aturai beauty. Let illustrati(ms, literary and pictorial, of localities best
known ' ecured from time to time, and let the young [Kopie of the fatnily be
cucour.. • ••' jO make use of them occasionally. Along with a hearty devotion
to the new-found colonial home, will Ite (piietly interwoven love and reverence
for the home of ancestors, and everywhere throughout our bro.ad T)ominion,
additional links of attachnn'iit to the parent state will continually lie forming,
all tending to promote practically the much-desired cunsolidaiion of the Kmpire.
