MEMORANDUM ON lOMAflOlS All llBOWMll SUBMITTED BY THE FACULTY OF ARTS OF McGILL COLLEGE, TO THE CORPORATION AND BOARD OF GOVERNORS. To complete the efficiency of McGill ('ollege, in its present state of organization, witiiout any extension cf the professoriate, funds are necessary for — I. AIDS TO STUDENTS, IL ADDITIONS TO THE LIHRARY. III. ADDITIONS TO THE GENERAL FUNDS OF THE COLLEGE FOR MISCELLANEOUS PURPOSES. The special objects named in L and TI. demand the largest sums at the present moment. The money required under heading III, however, is not much less than under I. The following are some of the forms under which donations may be made : — I.— AIDS TO STUDENTS. 1. Exhibitions and Scholarships (to be named after the founders, or after those whose memory they desire to perpetuate,) each of about £^o cy. yearly value. Of these there ought to be, at least, i6, so as to allow 4 for each College Class. Both Exhibitions and Scholarships to be awarded according to the results of Competitive Examinations. The distinction between Exhibitions and Scholarships to be as follows : — (a.) Exhibitions to be tenable for one year only. To be limited to Students of the First and Second years. The Competitive Examination to be general or in at least three subjects of the University course for those years. (b.) Scholarships tO be tenable for two years. To be limited to Students of the Third and Fourth Years. The Examination to be in a special subject. Tnus, a student obtaining a Scholarship at the commence- ment of his Third Year, w.'ll be aided to the end of his course. 2. Prizes for special subjects. These may be of any amount. A gross sum of from £(io cy. to ;^ioo cy., yearly, for all the classes is needed. Besides the above, intended to aid Students to the end of their B. A. course, it would be very advan- tageous if Scholarships lasting for 3 or 4 years could be given at the B.A. Honour Examinations, so as to help the ablest Graduates in their early struggles in the w^orld. In this way, the University would, like the larger Universities of the mother country, be sought out, as the path to eminence, by men possessing high natural talent, who cannot now afford the time for its proper cultivation. II.— ADDITIONS TO THE LIBRARY. These may be made either generally or in special departments of learning. In the latter case, if the col- lection of books given be sufficient to fill a' separate compartment of the William Molson Hall, donors may have a compartment specially reserved for them. There is already one instance in the "Peter Redpath Historical Collection." III.— ADDITIONS TO THE GENERAL FUNDS OP THE COLLEGE. These may be made in the following ways amongst others : — 1. — Donations to the Emiowmciit Fund. A donation of ^150 cy., entitles the donor to a perpetual nomi- nation of a Student who shall obtain education free of tuition-fees. The Roll of Benefactors under tliis head, may be seen in the College Calendar for any year. 2. — Endo^vments for any of the present nnendoived Professorships, to the extent of ^300 cy. a year or more, and thus setting free this sum from the College funds for general purposes.* The Professorships to be called as is customary, by the names of their founders, or such other names as they prefer. There is one such Professorship at present, viz : the " Molson Professorship of English Literature," • Under tins lioad may \a< mcntinni'dj aa a-TOo.r.g the 'rr!pnrtn.nt: oHjeofs for which the TTr.irfiraitv cannot now proTide, — Expenses of Examinations, Subdivision of Chairs and additional riieans of instruction by lecturers and tutors, Additions to Apparatus and Museum, Repairs «nd Improvements of Buildings. It would also be desirable that the University should be provided with an Astronomical Observatory and a Botanical Garden. i ,.-. ^-,1 I
