Prevent us, O Lord, in all our doings with Thy most gracious favour, and further us with Thy continual help ; that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in Thee, we may glorify Thy Holy Name, and finally, by Thy mercy, obtain everlasting life j through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that Thou hast made, nor woiddest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live ; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and HereUcks, and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of Thy Word ; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to Thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be one fold under one Shepherd. Prosper, Lord, the labours of those So- cieties of the Church in the land of our Fathers, which Thou hast deigned to use in the promotion of this object, and which have nourished the Church in the Colonies : and bless in like manner with Thy Holy Spirit and Providential succour the So- ciety in whose cause we are now met, and the undertakings which we have now in hand. The powers and privileges of a corporate body, having been thus obtained, the Lord Bishop summoned for the 3rd of August, a meeting of the members of the late Corporation of the Church Society of the Diocese of Quebec, who were at that time resid- ing within the Diocese of Montreal, such members with the Lord Bishop, being appointed in the said Act, the Corporation of the Church Society of. this Diocese. At this and subsequent adjourned meetings, the Constitution adopted by the Association, formed under the name of the Church Society of the Diocese of Montreal in the year 1850, was revised, and such alterations made in its By-laws, as the experience of the last two years had suggested. The most important of the alterations then proposed, and after due discussion finally adopted, was the change in the Constitution of the Central Board,* which is in future to be composed (vide By Law No. 6) of representatives elected by the different parishes or misaons, in proportion to the amount of the subscriptions paid into the Treasurei^s hands before the Ist October, in each year, for the general purposes of the Society. Another important subject which occupied the attention of the General Meeting, was the patronage of tiie Rectories, which by •To meet in futore at nooo on the first Wednesday in every month. 17 an Act of the Legislature (14 & 15 Vic, c. 175) is now vested in the Church Society. In the Report of last year, it was stated that the Central Board, impressed with a sense of its duty and responsibility on the sub- ject of Missionary labour, had placed at the disposal of the Lord Bishop of the Diocese the sum of £150 to be distributed by him, for Missionary purposes, in addition to the ;fi50 previously ap- propriated to Edwardstown, and the JE20 to Buckingham and parts adjacent, at the commencement of the present year, the Lord Bishop having promised to contribute £25, on con- dition that the Society raised the amount placed at his disposal to £200, the further sum of £25 was accordingly granted, but owing to a deficiency of funds in the Treasurers hands the whole of this amount has not been devoted to Missionary purposes, £157 10s. only, have been expended, together with the £25 contributed by the Lord Bishop, and the Society has thus failed to perform its engagements to the amount of j£17 10s. The Central Board fully alive to the fact, that they are called upon to labour as humble instruments for advancing in a measure the salvation of sinners, deeply regret that the funds at their disposal do not enable them to carry their wishes into effect, for the spiritual im- provement of their less favoured brethren, and to make greater efforts for the further diffusion of the Gospel of Christ, with all its privileges and blessings. In the appendix page, will be found a By-law which was framed on the suggestions of a Committee appointed in May last, to draw up a plan for affording assistance to the widows and orphans of Clergy- men, and which was adopted at the General Meeting of the So- ciety, held 5th October, 1852. ENCOVBAOEUENT OF EDUCATION. In forwarding the second object for which the Society is con- stituted, the Central Board have continued the grant of £50 to the " Diocesan Female School," and have much satisfaction in perceiving that many of the Clergy continue to avail themselves of the benefit of that Institution. 14 Daughters of Clergymen have been received into the school during the past year. The Board regrets that similar advantages are not yet afforded to the sons of the Clergy, and desires to express its readiness to promote to the utmost of its power so desirable an object. LAY COMMITTEE. The following important extract from the Reports of the Lay Committee will show the progress which has been made towards securing some endowment in various Missions. The Lay Committee, whilst gratefully acknowledging the mani- fold obligations received by the Church in this Province from the venerable S. P. G. in F. P., cannot refrain from expressing the deep regret experienced by them on the announcement that the munificent grant of £1000 per annum for the purchase of Glebes, had been for the future withdrawn, and this at a period when active measures had been adopted in various Missions to render this bounty available. The motive which induced that most charitable Society to with- draw the grant, arose from the fear that other Dioceses asking the same assistance, their funds would be unequal to the demand ; but the loss to our Diocese will be deeply felt and deplored. This grant was just the one calculated to call out the energies of a population of very limited pecuniary means. It gave a ..0, currency, one half purchase money of 25 acres of land adjoining present Parsonage house, the Mission having paid the difference. Hemmingford, £125, currency, one half of purchase money of Globe of 50 acres, the Mission having paid the difference. Chambly, £150, sterling, being for a like sum by the Mission paid into the Church Society, to form a sum or capital of £300, sterling, to be funded for the benefit of the Mission, as approved by letter of the Rev. E. Hawkins of 16th April, 1852. Napierville, £100, sterling, to improve the Glebe at Napierville, under the authority of Rev. E. Hawkins' letter of 16th April, 1852. Coteau du Lac, £150, sterling, one half of £300, to be funded for the benefit of the Mission, the Incumbent having paid the sum of £82 10s., currency, and assigned lands valued at £100, currency, with guarantee that the said lands shall produce that amount. 02 %:. Lachlne, £100, sterling. The inhabitants of that Mission having contributed in land and money to an equal amount. Lacolle, £140 8s. 3d., currency, to be paid as soon as the title deeds of the property shall be perfected, the Mission pay- ing into the hands of the vendor a like sum to complete the purchase. The Lay Committee, in their Report of 6th April, calls the attention of the Central Board to the stone Church built by the late Baron de Longueuil, at Longueuil, and the conveyance thereof, (together with a considerable piece of land sufficient for the pur- poses of a Vicarage, &c.,) recently made (13th January, 1852), by the present Baron, to the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, and for which the thanks of the Church Society are due. The Lay Committee further report, that in the distribution of the funds of the Church Society, they consider it their first duty to afford aid towards the foundation of new Missions, their next to the erection of Churches where none exists and afterwards the building of Parsonage houses, and their recommendations to the Central Board are based upon the above scale or gradation, reference being had to their pecuniary means. With regard to the repairs of Churches and Parsonage houses in Missions where duties are performed, they are of opinion that it is the imperative duty of the parishioners to keep these build- ings in repair — and until otherwise instructed by the Central Board, such will be the course followed by the Lay Commit- tee. In order to shew the principles by which the Society is in- fluenced in disposing of its accumulated capital, the following Report of the Lay Committee presented on the 4th Jan., and unanimously adopted by the Central Board, is given at length. " Applications for aid have been received since the last Report of this Committee :— From the Rev. R. L. Stephenson of Buckingham, to complete the Church in that mission. From the Rev. Joseph GrifBn of the Gore, to complete his parsonage, and From the Bev. G. P. G. in F. P., and the con- tributions of the inhabitants of the mission. In the Buckingham case, the estimated cost of the church was jeSlO, towards which the incumbent, his personal friends, and the inhabitants, raised by their exertions a sum of £229. The S. P. C. K., and this Church Society have added £50,— leaving a balance required to complete the church of £31. In the Gore application, out of a sum of £96 the estimated cost of a parsonage house, the inhabitants have raised £66 and built a substantial dwelling, and the Reverend incumbent says that the balance, or £30, will leave the Glebe and Parsonage house (worth £200) "free of debt." In the Ilemmingford case, the inhabitants have raised £125 to pay their half of the new-purchased Glebe, an exertion which proves them zealous in the good cause, and they now say through their clergyman that if this Society will grant them £25 or more they will put up a parsonage house before next winter. The Lay Committee feel the urgent necessity there exists, for complying to the extent of their abilities, with applications of the nature of the above. When the members of the church do show their zeal by a fair taxation of themselves, this Society is bound to aid them, and means must be found to do so. In order to effect this, and not anticipate the income of the next year, your Committee respectfully suggest the propriety of selling the Bank Stock belonging to the Society, and the appropriation of its pro- ceeds exclusively towards the objects of Church Endowments, and Church and Parsonage House Building. This sum, with due care and economy, keeping always in view the comparative means and contributions of those seeking aid, will give encouragement to all, and secure the immediate com- pletion of several unfinished churches, and add to the comfort and respectability of the missionaries. Should the Central Board be pleased to adopt the foregoing suggestion, the Committee would recommend the following grants to the above applications : — To Buckingham £30 ; Gore £25 ; and Hemmingford £25, the c 54 latter to be paid when this Committee shall bo satisfied with the nature and progress of the work. The whole respectfully submitted. J. S. McGoRD. Ch. L. C. DSF08XT0BT. There have been issued from the Depository during the past year: Bible 76 Pnyer Books 921 Tracts 2900 Total, 8897 The Book and Tract Committee, feeling deeply the impor- tance of placing Bibles and Prayer Books in the hands of all our people, have, with the sanction of the Central Board, adopted the plan of selling the common bound Bibles and Prayer Books at the lowest possible price, even at a loss to the Society. It was stated in the last report, that the Books received from the S. P. C. K. were sold at an unusually low rate in consequence of the liberality of the Society in London, but it has since been necessary to adopt a new scale of prices in consequence of the general rule of that Society being now acted on in forwarding our orders. I. d. Bibles are therefore now sold at. 1 3 Prayer Books 9 The Committee are fully alive to the necessity of facilitating the diffusion of religious knowledge, but do not feel justified in proposing in the present state of the Society's funds, any scheme for the formation of parochial depdts of Bibles, Prayer Books and other works on the Society's Catalogue for General Beading. This subject is regarded as of much importance, and will continue to engage the serious consideration of the Com- mittee. At the same time they would suggest to the Parochial Associations, and rural Parishes, the expediency of expending that portion of the annual subscriptions, which by By-Law No. 7 they are now allowed to devote to local purposes in the promotion of 3Q ified with the cCoRD. Although front the preceding statements, it may appear that there is a slijrht falling off in the amount raised in the Diorece for Cb' . ch purposes, yet it cannot be said that there is any diri'nn r < contrary, there is much cause for thankfulness ; since r n tiesi nire to make permanent provision for the spirit- ual wr '" '^ .ople, has been generally evinced. Much hovr^v;. /emainu to be done. 1 ' Church in this Diocese is deeply indebted to the venerable S. P. G. in F. P. and S. P. C. K., through whose instrumentality and co-operation the soldiers of the cross have hitherto been enabled to struggle on in their contest with the powers of darkness, and to extend the spiritual kingdom of the Great Captain of our salvation. The fact, however, cannot be concealed, that at no very distant period, the Church amonf.st us must be independent of extraneous aid. This we urge as a mo- tive for increased exertion. The seed has been sown, henceforth the plant must be water- ed, nurtured and trained to draw permanent support from its own soil. The foundations have been laid, and it is our bounden duty to raise up the sacred edifice, to enlarge the " place of her tent and to stretch forth the curtains of her habitation," that the feet of them who bring glad tidings of salvation, may tread the remot- est portions of our land, that generations to come may not grow up a people who know not the Grod of their Fore-fathers. It must be our care that to them, there shall be sacred Asso- ciations, the hallowed edifice, the stated service, and the bonds of religious communion, in a word, that they may have something more of Christianity than the name. The vote for Missionary purposes, as befoie stated, was, at the second meeting of the Central Board, increased by the promise of an additional JS25, but the state of the Society's funds has not warranted the Bishop in applying for aid to that extent — if, how- ever, the total sum thus wted, had been expended, we would ask, is it commensurate with the importance of the object in viewl Still it is the utmost that the Society has at present been enabled to attempt in this the most important branch of its ope- rations. Is it, we would ask again, a sum which the members of the Church would wish to be taken as an index of their gratitude, or indeed, a thank-offering for the many blessed privileges they enjoy ? We trust not— with this conviction, we call on our brethren, to imitate the Israelites of old, of whom it is written, that they brought much more than enough, « for the service of the work " which the Lord had commanded to be made." If the operations of this Society, which we believe are calcu- lated to advance the work of the Lord are to be extended, nay, if even the present limited field of labour, which the Society is en- abled to occupy is not to be contracted, increased exertions must be made, and a greater amount of funds must be obtained. As one means of accomplishing this, it is respectfully suggested, that in the City of Montreal, the resources of the Society might be greatly increased by the formation, in each Church, of a Com- mittee, by means of which the respective Congregations may be made more fully acquainted with the objects of the Society, their sympathies enlisted, and a machinery set to work for gathering in not only the contributions of the rich, but also the faithful offering of the poor. Without an increased effort on the part of those whose lot has been cast in pleasant places, where the voice of praise and thanksgiving is daily heard, and the ministrations of the Church are a constant privilege, how can we occupy with labourers the waste places or reap the fields now ripe for the har- vest 1 how can we rear in the distant parts of our Diocese, the sacred temple, dedicated to the service of God,— a monument and a memorial, which shall lifl the heart to the consideration of another and better life 1 or how shall we set apart a spot within whose hallowed precincts may repose the ashes of the departed, blessed by those sacred words, which even in the hour of death tell of the resurrection and the life t 'esent been of its ope- ibers of the ;ratitude, or rileges they ar brethren, I, that they )f the work g sare calcu- mded, nay, )ciety is en- ;rtions must Ined. ^ suggested, eiety might , of a Com- 3ns may be Dciety, their gathering in iful offering hose lot has praise and »ns of the :cupy with for the har- »iocese, the nument and n of another thin whose led, blessed eath tell of 98 .r '6 w tO 7 64 00 ^ o lo «o e e) M ^ eo £- o> o 1^ eo o 00 o o 94 04 94 >0 04 Ok 00 00 I •d •C) CQ O £<• CO I I ii 1 III o 00 o o le o to lO to 91 o o 00 O O !-• -i fH^'WIO 04 d*' 04 (O O » o 1-1 C4 04 o o a o St 04 -d o •i 2 04 O^ 00 t-o o« eo t-t- iH IH I-) 04 «t •f & ^ O O «0 00 O 04 04 00 04 04 O 1-4 «0 « •HCO tet- 1-4 •-If lO rH O ^09 ^ ^ >0 « eo O 04 04 eo O lO 00 £• 1-4 eo 04 i-l «o 00 eo 04 OO O oeo eoia IS eo 1-4 04 «o Tt< o» o eo 3 3 Ilk «0 Oi 04 00 O o» 1^ 00 o CO 00 CO 04 o CO o >o « ^ 04 0» o o o o © o et fH fH o to 00 01 00 ffi O 'M 1 • f^ » > 00 1^ i > CO e« 4 4 > iH «o > • 00 > • CO e* r© eo 4 to «o 5-* ■t 1-1 CO o o ID ■3t-0 t^ !
