Went to France after the cap tulation of Montreal, and returned to Canada a fe years after, when he married Mile. Lacorne de St. Lu, Aide-de-camp to hord Dorchester in 1775, he cor tribnted not a little to save him ft-om falling into th hands of the Bastonais. Lacorne St. Luc, Luc de Chapt de. Knight of th Order of St. Louis. Was a man of influence over tht Indians. Took Fort Clinton in 1747. Was present at Carillon and at St. Foye. After the conquest, he emigrated, but saved himself ft-om the wreck of the ship "I'Auguste" in the Gulf, and remained in the Country. An Executive Councillor under the new regime. That Lord Gosford did u succeed in his administra- tion of the Government, and calming the dissensions by which the country was torn, cannot be imputed to his memory as a disgrace, his predecessors for years having not been more fortunate. In the War of 1812, he commanded the third battalion of incorporated militia, was elected tu House of Assembly, became a member of the Legislative Council, and eventually Sherittof Montreal. He was amiable, generous, hospitable and contiding to a fault, was highly educated and spoke four lan- guages fluently. A refined and accomplished gentle- man. He died July 1840. One of the literati of Lower Canada and a gentleman of con- siderable attainments, to whose efforts we owe much of the present admirable system of education Was appointed Superintendent of Public Instruction by Sir Charles Bagot, which position he occupied for Hfteen years, was also Postmaster of Montreal. Hon. Judge F.aby. Dorion, Sir Antoine Aim6, born 1818. died 1891. Studied law with the late M. Cherrier Q. C, and later became the partner of that eminent advocate. In 1854, he was elected to Parliament ; some years later he became Provincial Secretary, in 1873 was Minister in the McKenzie Cabinet and had passed some im- portant measures. A year later he accepted the posi- tion of chief-justice of the Court of Queens Bench. In 1877 he was raised to the rank of Knighthood bv the Queen. Hon. Judge Baby 162. Provencher. A lawyer of standing, he occupied a most prominent place in the controversy which led to the insurrection of 1837-;{8. He crossed the .Atlantic to lay the grievances of the Canadians before the Imperial Parliament, When the rebellion broke out, he was seized and imprisoned. Xo sooner was he free to act again, than he was returned to Parliament. In 1H48, he was raised to the Legislative (,'ouncil where he continued to sit and vote for some years. His funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Montreal. Bishop Bourget pronounced a l)rief eulogv on Mr. Vigors many virtues and desired the congrega- tion to act upon the glorious words he uttered when expiring: '• J'aime mon Dieu et j'aime mon jjays." The Louisbourg Bell. This bell was blessed and hung in the steeple of the Churcn at Louisbourg, in 1724. Upon the capitulation of the town, in 1758, it was car- ried to Halifax, and for many years was in St. John's Chapel, at Throe Mile House. In 1S95 a subscription was raised in Montreal, through the efforts of Miss Barry, fFrangoise), for its purchase, and later it was presented to this Museum. B. The Riqaud Bell. This Bell was cast in London in 1801, for the Parish Church at Uigaud, where it was in use for many years. C. dc Lery Macdonald, Esq. C. Flag of the Loyal Beauharnois Volunteers, carried during the Rebellion 1837-38. It belodged to Col. Jona- than Odell, founder of Odelltown, U. E.
