A, ^, THE WORK OF THE PAST YKAR. The annual meetings of the Homoeo- pathic Hospital, Association, and Wo- man'."! Auxiliary which were hold during the opening weeks of the month of Deoeinher, put tho frioiuls of homoeo- pathy in possession of tho recordsofone more year's work iu the good cause. First came the Association's meeting on Monday December 7th. at which were submitted reports covering all the branches of the work now being carried on under its auspices. From these it was gleaned that tho Homoeopathic College had during the year granted to Dr. Mary Fyfe, a graduate of Bishop's College, a certificate to practice homoeo- pathy in the Province, she having passed the requisite examination. The report also stated that it was the purpose of the College to establish at an early date a course of popular lectures on the sub- ject of homoeopathy. Under the head of dispensary work it was reported that the dispensary •which had been opened on St. Antoine Street, in the summer of 1895, had been transferred to the Hospital on the com- pletion and opening of the new wing in April last and that its work is now being continued as the out-door department of the Hospital. Doctors John Wanlesf, H. M. Patton and A. B Griffith were appointed as the Board of Examiners of the College for the granting of dipbmasfor the ensuing year. ASSOCIATION OFFICERS. Fisher, K. Von Rappard, and S. C. Matthews, and Mossr-s. C. H. Binks, A. D. Durnford and A. R. Grafton. HOSPITAL WORK. The Hospital with its kindred work of out-door (lepartmei'.t and training school for nurses now forms by far the most important work being carried on under the Association's ctiarter, which covers all the different branches of the work. During the past year an extension has been added tothetormer building which has about doubled the capacity of the Hospital. With the addition'al room, ad- mirable equipment of tiie operating room and out-door department tiius pro- vided, the Hospital has been made one of tiie most complete of its kind. Sur- gical work of the best and with the most satisfactory results is constantly being done. The total number of patients treated for the year was 163, adult males 57; adult females, 79; children, 27; public, 118; semi-public, 20; private, 25 ; Protestar.ts, 145 ; Catholics, 18. Sur- gical operations, 54. The totf>l. deaths were 7, being a death rate of 4 percent., or, omitting cases whicii were hopeless upon entering, of but 1 and 1-5 per cent. During the year the training school for nurses, which is known as the "Philips" Training School, graduated two nurses, Miss Egan and Miss Adamr, botH- of whom have had constant eraploymient since tlieir graduation. In the Outdoor Department, the total prescriptions were 953, of which 25 were surgical and 928 medical. The patients treated were; Men, 71; Women, 157; Children, 90; total, 324. Fifteen cases requiring other treatment than the dis- pensary could give were semt to the hospital wards. The eye and ear de- partment, under the charge of Dr. E. M. Morgan, is a new and exceedingly Well equipped feature of the outdoor w'ork. Dr. Morgan comes from Philadelphia with excellent recommendations. The report of the Woman's Auxiliary in addition to other interesting mitter told of the efforts of the ladies in rafsing funds for carrying on the work of the Hospital. In Decemberof last year they held a bazaar in the Armoury from which was netted six hundred dollars. In April, on the occasion of the opening " -of the new wingatea and siilo of fancy articles whs held in t!io hospital, at which for the first time in Montreal there waa held a doll show. Tliis was in cliargeof Miss Van Home and Miss Buvlis. Tiie display was a notahle one and created wide spread interest the Hnancial result was $180, (id. During the year tiie Au.xiliary encountered tiie necessity of .ipi.uintmj,' a new J.adv Superintendent and were ho f .rtuiuite as to secure the service's of Miss l);ivis wlu» had won hi<,'h praise at tlie (ienera! Hospital and who is doing exceedingly saticfactory work. In the early autumn the coinmitteo of management caused a circular to he ad- dressed to the various Protestant church- es of tlie city, urging the claims oi our hosiutaltoasliareofthespeciul Thanks- Kiving colIectioi'S. Favorable -espouses were received from several of the churches. St. Miirtiiis sent fruit and vegetables which had been used at its Harvest Festival and two other churches sent money collections.
