Whereas it appears evident, from the Assessment Roll of the Township of London, for the year 1850, that many parlies have given in to the Assessor improper and grcssly defective returns of their property, and that the taxes will consequently fall far short of what they otherwise should amount to j and further, that the Township of London will lose, during the current year, a large sum, which should be collected and expended on the Roads and Bridges of said township Be it therefore enacted, that each and every person, who shall have so given in, or may hereafter give in, a false or defective return, whereby the proper revenuea of the Township would be defrauded, shall, upon conviction of such offence, for- feit and pay a sum not less than Five Shillings, or more than Five Founds, or be imprisoned, in the discretion of the Court ; Provided always that no person shaUbe imprisoned under this By-Law for more than twenty days for each offence. And be it further enacted, that the Statute Labor shall be performed, in every instance, before the twenty-fifth day of July in each year, and each and every Path- master is hereby required to return to the Township Clerk on or before the thirty- first day of July after the Statute Labor has been performed, the road list, by virtue of which he has called out the different parties liable for Statute labor in his di- vision, having carefully entered on such list the names of all parties who may have refused or neglected to perform the Statute Labor required of them by said Path- master, or to have paid in lied thereof the commutation money, at the rate of two shillings and sixpence currency, per day ; and also to enter on said list- all sums of commutation money that may have been paid into his hands, stating by whom paid, and for what services expended. All such returns to be duly sworn to before the Township clerk, or some one of her Majesty*;^ Justices of the Peace, of the County of Middlesex. And it is hereby further enacted, that any person who shall neglect, or refuse, I after having; repeived (four days notice fr{and become defec- tive, at any time, so as to endanger the future stability of the road, bridge, or other work mentioned, or to endanger the travelling public, it shall and may he lawful for the Pathmaster, in whose division each defect may take plac6, to notify the nearest resident householders, and repair such defect, as soon as possible ; and any neglect or refusal on the part of any individual to attend to such calbs from any Pathmaster, shall be punished as a default in Statute Labor, and one day's notice only shall be required from such Pathmaster, iii such cases of emergency. And it is hereby further enacted, that the Pathmasters shall, if required, give par- ties so repairing any road, bridge or other work, a certificate of the number of day's ^ibor so expended, which certificate shall entitle the parties to be credited on the next year's Statute Labor List, in any part of the Township where they may reside, or have removed. vi>^n the pi And it is hereby further enac^d, that where any road shall bo bounded by woods/ f "drafts, as or forest trees, it shall be the duty of the Pathmaster of such division, to give the owner, or occupier, of such wood-land, or forest trees, notice in writing, requi- ring such owner, or occupier, to cut down all such timber or trees, for the distance of twenty-five feet, from the outside of the road, within sixty days after having re- ceived such, notice. And should each ownet-) or occupier, neglect or refuse to cut Buch treea and timber, as required, it shall be the duty of the Pathmaster to cut and remove, dr cause to be cut or removed, such timber and trees, either by Statute Labor, or to sell the timber for defraying the necessary expenses.
