There has nothitig occurred of a marked character in relation to the Society, during the year that has passed. It is well known to have been a perioa of great commercial depression, and of unusual scarcity of money. This could not fail to a£Eect the interests of an institution solely dependant upon free will offerings. For a long term of years, the income of the Society had gone on gradually increasing. The contributions, however, for the past year fell short to a considerable amount. At the meeting of the General Committee in July 1861, it was found abso- lutely necessary to increase the appropriation for Mission- ary purposes. The Committee was reluctantly obliged to refuse compliance with many applications for aid to other objects only of secondary importance. By reference to the accounts of the Treasurer, made up to the 1st May, it will be observed that all grants made by the Committee have been paid at the time required, and that at the close of the fiscal year, no outstanding claims upon the Society remained. It will also be noticed that the cash balance was nearly as large as in the preceding year. Persons thoroughly versed in the past working of the Society, consider that its accounts were not hitherto exhibited in a more satisfactory condition. The Society will regret that several Missions on its list are vacant from want of clergvmen. These places are, as far as possible, partially supplied, until thejr can be regu- larlv nlled. This will account for the deficiency in some of the returns and reports, an abstract of which is hereby submitted. Andoter, Grand Falls, &c. — ^Rer. W. H. Street writes that the subscrip- tions from this Misoon are not yet completed. He does not anticipate any falling off from the amount forwarded during the past year. Mr. Street renews his application for aid towards the completion of the church at the Grand Falls, hoping with the assistance of the Society and the co-operation of the parishioners to be enabled to complete the building so fir that he may use it during the coming winter. He thanks the Society for the grant of books, which lie trusts will hs made again this year. Bathurbt. — Rev. 0. F. Street has enclosed an interesting report of his / Mission, which unfortunately reached the Secretary too late for the proceed- ings of the General Committee, of vhich the following are extracts:— "The 14 Lord Bi^bop made his triennial visit to this place last August ; his Lordship for the first time visited the Parishes of Shippegan and Carraquet, holding a confimiation in the former place, when twenty-two persons received the apostolic rite. These Parishes were never before visited by a Bishop of the Church of England, consequently the members of the Church and other inha* bitants in the Parish (inoUding the islands Bliippcjgan and Miscoe), showed their appreciation of thd privilege conferVed vpon them ; some by hospitably entertaining the Bishop, some by coming in their sailing boats 25 miles to attend Divine Service at 11a. m., and others on land, travelling distances equally great. In Carraquet also there was every expression of joy and respect shown to his Lordship by the well known and influential establishment of Messrs. J. Robin & Co. There arc only two Churches in the Mission, which require to bo replaced by new and more spacious buildings. With the consent of the Bishop, Restigouche has been separated from this Mission — stiH it is entirely too extensive for one Clergyman, and it requires the Missionary to travel over such cold, and exposed places, and to undertake such long journeys, and to encounter sncli labors, that the strongest constitution will gradually give way, if the duty is prdperly- attended to." The Missionary concludes with the request that the ^rant towards house rent will be continued, and applies fur aid for a Catechist. Contributions to object Ist, "aid to poor and new mis- sions," amount to |48 or $62 (the amount is not quite madQ up). > Blackvule and Nelson. — ^Rev. W. Cmden regrets that, though willing to do all in his power for the Society, owing to the^ depression in the lumber trade, and the present lamentable war in the States, he is afraid to s&y what amount he is likely to realize. He has received only |6. On the 26th Jlity tbo Lord' Bishop: confirmed 20 candidatesi in the Mission. Some of them tnivelled 16 miles to be present at that ordinance ; during last summer there were about 46 children and young-people attendiiig the dilfc$rent' Sunday schools ; at present the number is not so large, but he Is iti hopes that it wUl shortly reach about the same figure. BuCTOUCHE.--Rev. A. H. W«!eks has inclosed a report of the work dohri in his Mission during the past year, which will appear in the tabular statement. From tho' Report for ShediojO, it will be seen that the sum of $6 was collected by Mr. Weeks for the Society. OAUBRiDaE.—Rev. A. Wood reports: cotatributions from his Mission to Object 6 (aid to the building and enlarging of churches, &c.), $8 79. Casiporello. — Rev. J. S. Williams reports that at a meeting of this Coni- mittee, regret was expressed that the contributions would probably, owing to the great depression in the fishing trade, be less than those of last year. The Committee respectfully request the renewal of the grants to this Mission, includiug £10 to the Church School, which has buen in operation since April 18G1. The amount as yet contributed h $62 62. Canterbury. — Rev. T. Ilartin r(!ports contributions to the amount of |26 26. Carlkton. — Rev. F. Coatc-r reports that the contributions, not yet completed, will amount to about C Chatham. — Rev. S, Baccn reports that at a meeting of this liocal Committee held on Ascension Day,' the following resolutions were passed: — 1. That this Committee continue to entertain the same favorable opinion Ihcy have ever felt and expressed of the inestimable benefits the Diocesan Church Society (under the Divine bleagin") promises to bestow on the Colpuia! That this Committoo, whilst returning thanlca for tho liberal grants towards the augmentation of the Chatham ^mday school Library, hope they will not be overloolced when making their respective appropriations for he present year. Contributions amount to 111? 86. DocoLAS. — Rev. T. E. Dowling writes that at the consecration of a new Church in this Parish, on the 20th of March last, the Bishop admitted five children into the Church. The offertory on that occasion amounted to £7 lOs. ; as debt still rests upon the building, with regard to which, the Parish- ioners who have taken the most lively interest in the work, trust for aid iVom this Society. ** Although," Mr. Dowling writes, " the back settlement roads have been unusually blocked up with snow the last winter, I have been enabled, through walking on snow shoes, and travelling on different roads, to keep every appointment at Tay Creek, v here Chnrcn work is steadily progressing. The settlers have had three regular Services in the month, and the children are publicl.v catechised after the Sunday afternoon second lesson. A series of week day lectures on popular subjects are being delivered by different Church- men, and the Missionary meeting on Whit Sunday, in the evening, as well as other Sunday evening gatherings, have been productive of good. More books are sadly wanted for the Church library. There is no debt on the Church, and improvements are from time to time being made. I can safely say that regular Church Services have raised the tone and conferred a lasting benefit on the Settlement." One of the monthly Sertic^s held.in a School room, has been discontinued, owing to the residence of the Missionary being for the present at a distance of over 20 miles. ' The Lectures during LeAt wa^ well attended, and the Sunday afternoon catechising has suppiied the want of religious instruction to the young. A Bell has lately most kindly been presented by the Bishop to the Stone Church, and £28 provided towards a stone turret. The Missionary's salary is now contributed at the offertory, the subscription list system having worked badly. There is reason to believe a larger amount will be raised by the present plan, which was unanimously agreed to by the parishioners at the Easteir Mdnday meeting. Fredericton. — Rev. C. Lee is happy to report the total amount of contri- butions from the parish (including the collections in the Cathedral, as well as those at the Parish Church), to be, as far as at present known, about $770, an excess of about |120 above those of last year. It is proper, however, to remark that this encouraging increase is due to a special donation for the pre- sent year from the Lieutenant Governor of £60. Gaoetown. — Rev. J. Nealcs exceedingly regrets having to report " a dimi- nuted subscription from my mission. We must try to do better another year, and if possible, make up our deficiency." Contributions arc $68. Glkkelo, Newcastle, &c. — Rev. James Hudson reports that at the meeting of the Glenelg Committee, which took place on the Slst of May last, a resolu- tion was unanimously passed expressive of the people's conviction that for the future, aid in some means should be granted by the Diocesan Church Society towards the perpetual Endowment of Parishes or Missions in the Diocese. The Missionary fcara that there will be some diminution of the amount of support usually sent from this district, owing to the peculiar financinl circum- stances of the times and the many local claims pressing upon the handful of Churchmen in -these parts, but he hopes that the diminution, if any, will be temporary only. He now forwards a check for £11 6s. 3d. for the Society's general purposes, 16 and triuta that those who have not m yet been able to give any thing for Ruch excellent objeota, will generously reqwnd when another call ia made upon them. GRAMn Han.* N.— Rev. O. T. Carey incloses a list of contributors to the So- ciety, amounting to £8 lOfl., and regrets that it is smaller than usual. The war in the United States has greatly ii\)ured the fishermen, by dosing a great portion of their accustomed markets. Through an inadvertence on the part of the Secretary, he regrets that the subscripuon list from this Parish for the year 1861, was omitted in the Report. Grxkmwioh ANn WiCKHAM.— Rev. D. W. Ficlcett writes as follows:— "Of the real progress of our Church in this Mission, I can say but little, as I have been in charge only a few months. In Greenwich, the number of Church families is small, but there is evidently an increasing interest in our Services. The Parish Church has been opened every Sunday, with but one or two excep- tions, and week day services have been held every month at the station in Mende's Settlement and at Tilley's. At the former the people are much attached to the Church, and the attendance is large and regular. Both these stations are in PetersviUe, but until the appointment of a Clergyman to that Parish, it seemed desirable that I should keep them open. The Parsonage is still unpaid for, and the people eamesUy hope for some assistance from the Society. The contributions, notwithstanding the unusual scarcity of money, show a small increase — they are for Greenwich, |4d 12. In the long neglected Parish of Wickham there ia much cause for encourage- ment. The attendance at the Church, which ia opened every Sunday is large. Even those who call themselves churchmen, are few in number, and the Diocesan Church Society is comparatively unknown, but, I trust the amount now contributed, $1S 68, will be largely increased in another year. The monthly services at the London Settlement have of bite been reluct- anUy discontinued, owing to the want of a suitable building ; at the shannon Settlement, however, ei^t miles from the Wickham Church, the School house is well filled every other Saturday, and much interest ia felt by the people in the Services of the Church hitherto entirely unknown among them. The older members of the community were nearly all brought up in the Church of Eneland, but since their removal to this country, more than thirty years ago, they have never had a clergyman to virit them, or beei\ able to attend the services of their Church. In many of them the love of the Church has not grown cold, while others are, I fear, entirely lost to us. They are anxi- ous to build a church, for which the ground has been given, and the timber is on the spot ; aid from the Society is solicited. Hampton.— Rev. W. Walker writes, " our collections in aid of the Society amount to about £27, and may yet be increased, which, though less than I hoped, exceed the amount contributed last year. Our Lay Delegates will solicit aid for a church recently erected in this Parish, which stancb on land held in fee simple. The exterior walls of which are completed, and which consist of a well dengned nave and chancel, with tower and steeple, south porch and vestry." Harvey, Hopewell, &c. — ReV. H. B. Nichols has inclosed a list of sub- scribers amounting to $18 Al. " The Parishioners of Hopewell," Mr. Nichols writes, " are endeavouring to raise or secure $2u0 of the amount I advanced towards their Church." "I resigned the charge of the Albert County Mission, six months ago, into the hands of the Bishop, the resignation to take efiiBCt on the 10th of July. I have oflPered myself to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, as a missionary to the heathen. The impression which I received in early life as to the duty of preaching the gospel of Jesus to those who have never heard it, have increased with my growth, and I find I cannot resist the impulse within me to go forth and fulfil my early resolutions. In doing so, I at the same time feel great regret in leaving my friends in this Diocese, and I hope I shall have the sympathies and the prayers of all the meidfoers of the Church." »ny thing for , is made upon x>n to the 80- M usual. ScovU reports contrlbotiens to the amount of $120 for thti general purposes of the Society. Lanoastrb.— Rev. W. 8. Covert has i^orwarded the retonis fi^m this Mis* sion, and repRev. H. Pollard has kindly forwarded a very interesting report of the work in his extensive Mission, of whioh the following are extracts: — "Services are reguUrly held in the three churches: in Maueerville every Sunday ; in St. JohnX Oromeeto, three Sundays in the monui, and in St. Paul's, Lower Burton, during the winter once, and during the summer twice every month. In the spring and autumn I have been prevented crossins the river several times, and on Easter Sunday especially I was sorry to be obTigod to remain at home, it being Impossible to cross. Our congregations, cspeciollv in MaugervUle, are small at these times from the state of the roads, which are often almost impassable for weeks, at the opcn'ng or dosing of the river, or during the continuance of the freshet. " At present I have but vae Settlement at which i hold Service every month, but I am convinced that several other stfttions might be profitably occupied if the obstacles in my way of attending could bo set aside. I refer to the diffi- culty of taking my horse and waggon across the river on each occasion, which is both costlv and troublesome. I also hold Service once a month at a Temperance Hall in MaugervUle, which has been very well attended. " I am the only Church clergyman in the C<)unty of Sunbury, and I fear that the greater part of the inhabitants are ign. rant of the futh in which their fathers were instmcted. While my attention Is necessarily confined to the three churches, and the people frequenting them, it seems scarcely practicable to enlarge very much the sphere of operations, especially as the river separates me fiom-the most thickly populated part of my mission, which extends back- ward some distance from the oppodte branch cif the St. John. " I am happy to say, that on taking charge of the Mission, some 18 months ago, I found the sittings in all the Churches entirely iree ; while the offertory is collected at every service. Two of the Churches are nearly new, but the third, at Uromocto, is sadly out of rcpau*, but I trust that ere long, we shall be enabled by God's blessing, to erect a building more worthy of His holy name. "The number of baptisms, during the past year has been .few and so with the burials. During the year ending April 1st, I travelled 2,147 miles. Sun« day schools are held at the Oromocto Church and at MaugervUle, the former pretty well attended, but the latter, from various causes, scarcely repaid the additional exertion required from the Clergyman. " The collections which ara sot completed, will, I think, rather exceed those of last year." MoNCTON. — Rev. W. N. Boy«r, reports contributions to the amount of £7 $8., which he coBsiders a large sum, especiaily for this year. ** The Church," Mr. Boyer is happy to state, " maintains her ground, the congr^ations average a very good attendance, our oommunioante arc very regular and devout at theHoly Communioa, which is administered on all the J'estivals and on the first^mky in each month." " I have been able," he says, ** to take the regular duty without much hindrance, except for « few services during the winter, owing to tbc unusual amo«At of snow dmts : throughout the whole of last year, I was able toincrenHC the Sunday Services by the ad(fition of one more fier utoQth at one of my' stations : this gave me three services on that Shaday with a jburAey. of nearly 20 n^es,, but my health has not been, eqtiaf to (ks addition since .Tanuary. ** I had ."Special services during lient, as in former years, «Bdl-ai| happy to> say that the attendance was morvtencouraging than formerly. **The claims of the Diocesan Church Society are, I tUfnk, pretty generally fclty and I believe that the subscriptions would bo much loFeenifi tM means of my people admitted of it; I find no reluctance tq Bid>scriDe, but> a> generally expressed regret that the amounts are so small ; this nnproduetive state of the lumbev mariiet is very, keenly ielt herfe, and ' has been the diief cause, I am sure, of our parochfal contributions not reaching to a higher amount." Frith, Esq., Secretary of thia Local Committee, has enclosed returns shewing a total of contributions amounting to f 874 8G, neariy f 100 more than those for the pnst year. " I may," Mr. Frith writes, '* have a small amount to add. I suppose an increase of subscriptions is the beat evidence of increased interest in the objects of the Diocesan Church Society, but there is still a sad deficiency of that hearty r.cal about so important a work, which would bring greater numbers to our local meetings, give us more ready hearts and iiauds to Join in uoUeuting, and eventually enlarge both the number of contributors, and the amount of their contributions. For these dull times, however, we have done very well, and you will observe that the collections in Church are half as much more than those of last year." Uphak. — Rov. S. Jones Hanford, on behalf of this Local Committee, ac- knowledffos with many thanks the pant of books made to thia MiHdioa iubt year, and trusts they will not be forgotten in the next appropriation. (Ic desires to renew the application made last year for a small grunt to assist iu [)aying the debt due on the Church at Quaco. Tiiore is good reason for aHk- ng for .this help, and bo trusts the funds of the Society will warrant the appropriation. "I rejoice to find," Mr. Hanford writes, "that our contributions will morn than equal those for the last and bo beyond tliose of any previous year. Under the low state of business, of which every one is oonipiuining, tliis is *)eyond what we might have looked for, and is certainly a cause of mo.st licarty thanks to Almighty God." The contribuUoiis amount to $148 02, of which |8 is limited to the 2nd ol^ect fund. WssTriKLn. — Rev. E. S. Woodman reports that at a meeting of this Local Committee resolutions were passed, thanking the Society for the grant of books and wishiitg to receive a like appropriation this year, and also, that fully aware of the many urgent calls upon the Society, and the limited extent of its means, yet as " aid to building of Churches" is one of its objects, the Committee request a small grant to aid in re-building the Parish Church, and also to assist in the completion of the new Church on the Ncrepis Road. " I hope," Mr. Woodman writes, " to forward an amount of contributions equal to that of last year. Should there to be any deficiency it will not arise from any indifTcrcnce on the part of the people, but from real inability to give, there being no sale for their lumber. " Since I have been relieved of the Parislies of Greenwich and Petersville, I havi! been able to have the Churches in this Parish open regularly for Divine Service, and also to have an out station occaaionaliy on' Sundays. The latter i'ervice seems to he much appreciated by the people, and I trust, through God's blossiug, will be productive of good." Contributions amount to f 63 11. WoonsTOCK.— Rev. S. D. Lee Street has inclosed resolutions passed at a meeting of this Lcical Committee, thanking the Society for the grant of books, which is again solicited, and also the following : That though tUis Committee feel more aud more deeply impressed with the 22 iiii m- geecssitj of promoUng to the utmost of their ability the objects of the Diocesan Church 'Society ; yet wey greatly fear that the contribuUons from tUa Mission will fall short of those of preceding years, on account of the unprecedented scarcity of money. That this Committee view with much satisfaction the prospect of an Endow* ment Fund being raised in this Diocese, which, in the opinion of this Com- mittee, is the only legitimate means which can be adopted towards meeting the difficulty that must naturally arise from the withdrawal of the grants from the Society for the Piopagation of the Gospel. The Bev. S. D. Lee Street, in inclosing the foregoing resolutions, writes as follows : — " I am sorry to say we fall somewhat short of the contributions for former years ; but I would assure the Society that this arises from no failure of interest in its important objects, but dolely from the actual want of means. There never was a time when the great scarcity of money was more keenly felt ; in fact many have found it dilBeult to pay even the small amounts they have contributed, and others have been unwillingly compelled to decline altogedier. It has really been a work of labour, falling principally upon the Curate and myself, to obtain as much as we Iiave. " Bowever, I would remark that much has been done in this Mission for parochial purposes since the last Anniversary lilffeting of the Society. The sum of £126 has been expended in repairs on the Glebe House, and I am happy to say it is now more comfortable than it has ever been. " Arrangements are now being made for such an extension of St. Luke's Church as will afford about sixty additional free seats, which are much needed. The people of Richmond are also engaged in erecting a parsonage in that Parish, and have subscnbed a large amount towards this object. Taking all these things into consideration, it cannot be wondered at that the contributions to the Diocesan Church Society are less than of late years. " There is nothing of an interesting nature to offer to the notice of th6 Society. The work of the Mission is still carried on as heretofore, and the regular routine of duty performed ; and I hope and trust that the Church is gradually gaining ground. But though the fruits of our labour are now scarcely perceptible, yet I cannot but hope that, by the blessing of God, the good seed sown may ultimately take root in the hearts of the hearers. It is this hope indeed which sustains the missionary in his labour of love, and encourages him to persevere, even when he may appear to be labouring in vain, and spending his strength for naught, and tliough he, may go down to the grave ■with no proof that his efforts have not been fruitless; yet he is still cheered by the reflection that it is of God's ordering, that one should sow and another reap. He may, without presumption, rejoice in the thought that though the harvest time may not arrive till long after his death, yet it wil4 be what he has Sown that others shall reap, and both he that soweth and he that rcapetb, shall at length rejoice together, and meet as fellow-labourers in the harvest kingdom. This it is which connects us all together, not only with those who have gone before us but with those also who shall come after us; it connects us as part- ners in the blessedness which can only arise from union in that labor of love, in which no laborer goes unrequited— a motive surely for pressing on, that we may not be ' weary in well doing.' " Contributions amount to (219 96. i It will be observed that in many of the foregoing reports the amount of the contributions is not stated at all, or only the sum which it is probable may be raised. The usual summary of the whole amount reported for the various objects of the Society, is therefore omitted in this place. It will be found on the last pa^e of the Report — made up when all the returns are complete. Enougn may be gath- ered from the above abstracts to warrant that the sum total .J 23 vfill not fall «hort very inuch, if flt -all, of ihat of the part year. First of all, surelj^ devont and hearty thanks are due to ERm who has put it into the hoarts-of His people "to con- tinue their offerings for the furtherance of this 'blessed work. More might have been expected. There are^many Churchmen who, without doubt, could and ouglitto have given more latrgely; but taking into account the ^present unfavorable circumstances, the reports above referrod to warrant the hope of a large increase to the funds of the Society in better times. The absence of the Lord Bishop has necessarily detracted fnuch from the interest in the late proceedings of the So- ciety. By his \«sit to England, however, at. the present time, the Church m »this Province may gain great benefit. Through his personiil rcpi-esentations, tlte Society for the Pr«Tiagation of the Gospel has consented to renew, for a furtner term of years, tlie grants made to thdr later Mis- sionaries, and has made e^her^arrangements with regard to those allowances, by -wbich t\a» Diocesan Church Society will be relieved from much responsibility that was antici- pated. A most favorable -opportunityvwill thus be afforded fto the Church to make provision for Miat change which •must in a short time take place, when these ali()wance8, fmade by our brethren in England, are vto be wholly with- drawn. Upon Ilis Lordships return, it is lioped, some steps will be taken with regard to the Endowment Fund, or to make special efforts te gain contributions to this So- 'ciety for that object. This Society has, from the first, been greatly favored by the kind suppopt of successive representatives of Her Graci- ous Majesty, iuithe Government of tliis Pro^^nce. The Hon. Mr. Manners Si^ton, it is well remembered, took a warm interest in tlve work of the So(jiety, and often spoke both in private and publicly, of the aniportanoe of its present and future prospects, as deeply affecting tl*e welfare of the Church in this Diocese. The like kindness has been con- tinued on the present occasion. His Excellency the Lieu- tenant Governor has not only given a very generous dona- tion to the funds, but has als© consented to preside at this Anniversary Meeting, and will, it is hoped, accept the office of Patron (to the Society.* ■Reviewing then the year tliat has passed, looking also at the prospect for the present and for the future, the niem- * It has pleased His Excellency to accede to the wbh of the Soctctj*, as expressed at the Anuiversar; meeting. Sustained by this, much l&bor' can be cheerfully performed, and many difficulties easily- surmounted. At the meeting of the Executive Committee on the 4th t)f July, it was resolved that the Speeches delivered at the Anniversary Meeting should be added as an Appendix to the Report. It was- found, however, that a full report of the speeches could not be obtained, so that the Committee appointed to assist the Secretary in publishing the Annual Report, determined^ to omit them altogether. This is the more to be regretted as the remarks made by His jExcel- lency the Lieutenant Governor were most valuable, and ^1 that was said by the other speakers would have beeit most interesting to' the members of the Society. In a letter received by the Secroitary, dated 22d July, 18C2, the Lord Bishop is pleased to say,-^ " I shall be fully prepared and authorize you to express ray approval of the new object of the Society, as proposed and earned at the late meeting." The sum total of the contributions reported for the cur- rent year, is as follows : — 2d Obiect, . . . . $8 00 5th do. 8th do. 9th do. General Purposes, 8 79 . 24 00 8 00 . 5,521 45 Total, . . $5,570 24 Tliere are some parishes from which the returns have not yet been receivea, and in many instances an additional amount will, it is said, be paid wO the Treasurer, though too late to appear in this report.
