 NOTICE. 
 
 The miserably inadequate amount of the contributions to the Synod Fund, for 
 defraying tlie expenses of conducting the Synod's public business, as well as the 
 falling off of the same, makes it absolutely necessary to present tiie Ministers and 
 Codgregations with a Statement of the payments for a few years past. The items 
 have been taken, with the utmost possible care, from the Treasurer's Book, and are 
 printed opposite to the Synod Rolls for the several years. The statement will show, 
 at a glance, which Congregations have paid and which have not, as well as the 
 relative amount of the Contributions. This last is a matter of some importance 
 seeing that while the expenses of the Synod would require a contribution of not 
 less than £\ 10s. cr £2, at the very least, from every Congregation, many 
 Congregations have so utterly forgotten their duty, in this matter^ as to send in lOs. 
 or even 5s. And attention must be pointed to a most ingenious practice of remain- 
 ing in arrears for two or three years, and thus covering the whole With one payment 
 of a small sum, too little even for one annual ccmtribtition. T'be consequence of 
 all this is, that the payments for several years back have been utterly inadequate, 
 and that the Synod is getting yearly in debt to a very considerable amount, to say 
 nothing of the continually increasins wpnt of many things necessary for the accom- 
 modation and preservation of the Synoa a Records, Books, and Documents, which 
 should not be neglected, as vrell as the comfort and efficiency of carrying on the 
 Synod's work< Now, on the part of those Congregations who have sent in no 
 Contributions or miserably insignificaat ones, is this honest, in regard of their duty to 
 bear an equitable share of the expense ? — is it honest towards those to whom we are 
 in debt ? — is it honest towards those officers of the Synod who are required to get 
 certain work done by parties to whom we are already deeply in debt, and to whom 
 we can hold out no certain prospect of payment for work contracted for ? It is 
 earnestly urged that Ministers and Congregations, hinted at in this Circular, bestir 
 themselves and raise something very comideraUe, for arrears. The matter should 
 be taken up in a matter-of-fact manrter at meetings of Presbyteries | — and Presby* 
 tery Clerks should use some personal activity and diligence in corresponding with 
 members, obtaining the money, and forwarding it without delay. 
 
 Further, at the request of many members of the Church, a new Edition of the 
 first six years Minutes, in 8vo., verbatim from the Records, has been put to press, 
 and will soon be published. The cost vi^ill be considerable, but still, if this is followed 
 up in another year or two, by another publication, up to the entire Minutes of the 
 present Clerk, the advantage in having a Complete history of the Proceedings of the 
 Synod will be felt to be such that no one will, in all likelihood, complain of the 
 expense. A proposal is made, in the way of a suggestion, biit at the same time very 
 tarnestly, that, over and above all arrears, every Minister and Congregation should 
 furnish, between now and the new year, a contribution of four or five dollars 
 towards a Supplementary Fund. The money will be faithfully accounted for by the 
 Treasurer or Clerk, to whomsoever it is sent.
