Vice-President. W. H. HASKINS. Mine Manager. HE HOMESTAKE was the second location made in the Rossland mining district and is one of the best-known properties in the camp. It is highly spoken of by all authorities who have written on the present and pros- pective value of Rossland Mines. It is situated on the now famous South Belt, in the neighborhood of a number of celebrated properties, many of which are producers such as the Crown Point, R. --:. Below the 65 foot level the silver disappeared and the gold values increased. No. 2 shaft is in ore all the way down, and IS sunk on the hanging wall. No crosscut was made, and the full extent of the ore body is not known, but is certainly the full width of the shaft, which is four and a half feet. The average value of the ore, as ascertained by many careful tests, is $18.20 per ton. It has become richer as the depth increased, and it is confidently expected that the quality will, with further development, be as high' as that of leading properties in the camp. There is a large quantity of ore on the Homestake dump, and from this and the new ore obtainc-d in developing the property the mine is expected to make shipments from the beirinninir. d d li -» e e g d e Transportation. Tfie excellent facilities for shipping- have been commented on by all those who are familiar with the camp, and can readily be seen from the picture herewith. The Columbia and Western Railway passes directly under the dump. The Red Mountain Railroad, from Xorthport to Rossland, it is expected will be open for traffic in November, and will then place the camp in direct railroad communication with all the American railway systems. The Canadian Mining Review, of July last, in speaking of the HOMESTAKK in a report dealing with different Rossland claims, says : "It is the concensus of opinion among mining men that this ''property if properly handled would be one of the wonders of the '•camp. Its location, immense body of ore, strong vein and every- "thing else places it in a position to rapidly become a shipper." Mr. Wm. A. Carlyle, Mineralogist to the Government of British Columbia, in an official report on the Rossland mining district, issued in August, 1896, by the Bureau of Mines, in speaking of the Homestake describes it as a promising property, the proper and thorough opening up of which only awaits capital and work. 7 The Directors have authorized the placing upon the market of 50,000 Development Shares, par value $1.00 each, fully paid and non- assessable.
