More missionar-ies are ur-gmtly necdi'd, and these, it is Imped, lire iSuard of Missions will speedily sujiply. l)Ut it is to the edtrcatiorral side of the wryr'k that we would espcciiilly mil the attention of the Confei'ence. If we are to conser've the results of oin- mission work, if we ai-e to lift the Indian ti'ibes oirt of barbarism arrd |iii'|iar'e therrr for the duties of citi/iMiship, the educrlion ot the cliildri'n is ail indispensable condition, and this education must cover industrial fuir'- .'^iiits as well ,'is or'diriary school duties. Ther'c ar'e r'casons gi'owing out of the unsettled habiis of the jieople which neittr'ali/e tlie etlbrts of oiri' liest teachers, and indicate the necessity for a radical chairge ot policy. Where till' people ar'e fr'equently migr'ating from ]>oiiit to point iir I'onnection \vi!li hunting ;inil lishini; o]iei' itimrs, the wor'k of the oidinar'v school is I'litii'cly bi'okeii up, and the nsult of months of labor is alt igether dissi- liHii'd. The successful missionar-y mttst go with his projile and cai'r-y on liis work alike in the settled village or the tempor-ar-y camp ; but with the school-teacher this is impossible. I'V)r the sitcci'ss of his work, the childien must be got together irr one place and kept there. 28 MINUTES OK THK lUiniSH COM'MMIA IMIl In our jii(I;,'iniMit, tlie remedy for tlii! state? ot' tilings referred to will be found in a system of residential Su-hools estahlisiied at given ccMitves, into which the children frir education will lie continued without those frequent and disastrous interruptions which mar its eHicieny. The com- pulsory use of the iOnglish lair'uage will not only open their way to the elevating influence of a wide literature, but will prepare; them for an intelligent discharge of the duties of citizenship, while tin; atmosphere of civilization, home-life and teaching in which tl ey would move would form the best safeguard against temptations to intemperance and licentious- ness, which have ruined so many of theii' race. Already the nuclei of at h^ast two such schools are in existence, one at Port Simpson ami the other at Chilliwhack. At the foi'mer phu'c there is a girls' home, with twenty pupils, under the chaige of the Woman's Missionary .Society, and the beginning of a Boys' llotne, with only seven pupils at present, but capable of e.\pansioii if oidy the m(>ans were avail- able. A site has been secured by tin; Woman's Missionary Society, on which they propo.se to erect a home that will acconunodate fifty pupils. If a similar building were erected for the boys under the control of the General Board of Missions, with provision for industrial training, it would meet the needs of the case so far as that? religion is concerned, and it would be (juite practicable to carry on the school studies of both sexes in the commodious village school building already erecti^d, thus increasing efticiency and reducing cost. Similar remarks will apply to Coijualeetza Home at Chilliwhack. The results of that institute, so far, are most encouraging, and by an extension similar to that proposed for Port Simpson, anil tiie acejuisition of some land for farming ])uri)oses, would answer admirably for the tril'cs of the Fraser, and to some e.vtent for those of V'anco\iv(>r Island. There are two other centres at which we think industrial schools should be established, but we need not refer to them more specifically just now. We recommend that a copy of this report be sent to the (Jencral Board of Missions, and to the Executive of the? Woman's Missionary (Society, and that prompt and e;irnest action be in-ged in both cases. We also recommend that carefid estimates of j>robalile cost for site, building's, t>nd equipment and uiainteuiance accompany said report. 4. Tlie review of the year has called forth deep thankfulness to God for the many eucourai^ing aspects of our oomnion work. New churches have been i)uilt, largely increased congregations in some instances, l)lessed revivals of religion here and there, and the opening of new and widening fields, calling for a considerable addition to our staff of laborers. We are gliiil to report a net increase of .">84r to the membership of the Church for the year. Dili' Conference sessions ha^ e been pleasant and prolitable, and I'riuight with a blessed spiritual i iHuence. Our discussions hiive covered iiiauy practical subjects of deep importance to us all. We have not fiiiled to recognize the great significance of our times and the importaiice of tlic position we occuj)y in common with other Churi'hes in this land, in reliitinn to the future of this new and developing country. We earnestly pray that as a Church we may, by divine grace, nobly and adeepiately niatcii our responsibilities and opportunities. Our one essential mission istu ^Tush out loin and buikl up the kingdom of God by spreading Scrip- 'aiial holiness in the land. To this end we need the culture of Christi.m chiiracter (jf no feeble kind, but enlightened, energetic and agijre.ssive. Our iiol)le heritage of Christian doctrine, covering the great saving uiiixcisalities, gives us an a(lei|uate eipiipment under God for our >tU|]endous yet blessed woilc. We have no misgiving as to the divine provision r.vA saving desi'jjn relative to every human soul, so that we can so fortli ^itii .' nnwaveiing and coinm;i'>dir.g coiilidence to perform *lie function; c our mission. l.iet our people be the living enibudinient of these blessed and savii g doctrines, and everywhere the illumination of their manifestation wi'l "chase the gloom of hellish niglit." l^et us as children of the light never be found pleading foi' a lowering of the stan- diuil of the Chi-istian life, l)ut rather covet for ourselver and Cor all the attainment of the di\inest ideals. Let us aim at their realization in our l«ili(i'S, in our business, in our social and domestic life, in our church ri'liUions ; tlien shall we realize the privileges and ei\noblement of our stiw.iidship to (lod, and escape the im-ubus of a materializing worldliness «liiili (pienches all spir'itual aspiration. Let us not come nndei- the (It^adly spell of the sj)irit and prev.iiling sentiment of the world of unliilief, but rather let us live undiu- the constant intluence of th(> powers iml pleasures of the world to come. To this end we must be diligent ^tuilchts of th(^ Word of God, and eipially active in tlie translation of that Word into life and piactice. In our daily dealing with niatetal 'ahics, wo must not I'urget the moral obligation which they can ni^ver 42 MIXUJ'L.S OF THE BlilTlSH CULUMIUA [mi outwnigli. Wi! must seek to l(\iven tins wliole couiitiy with ww con- viction of tiie siipreiiie iinpoi'taiice of uioimI and spiritual interests in themselves and in their bearing upon material interests and our country's weal. '■'here is much in our surroundings that is admonitory, and that calls for unremitting vigilance and united action. (Ircat inroads are Iving made upon tlie sanctity of the Salibath. We shall guard it best on our part by constantly keeping it, permitting no seductive sentiment, subtle and plausil)le reasoning of delusive example to override divine precept and sanction. Jjct us not allow our.selves to become accustomed tci this. or any other evil, but cultivate all the more a delicate sensitiveness tnuiirds tile divine will, and permit God's truth to have a voice tiirough us, and His will an embodiment in our conduct. The great question of Intemperance is always one of recurring and burning importance : the position it is Iteiiig forced into in great public issues is full of liopeful significance, looking to the ultimate triumjjji of right. Let us consistently continue to honor the record of our Churcii in relation to it, by bringing to bear all the forces of truth and righteousness at our connnand for the overthrow of this justly dreaded and reprobated evil. Social purity siioulit ever find in us a firm ally, and we should lose no ojiportunity to visit the penalty of a scatiiing denunciation upon trie in- famous doctrine, far too prevtilent, tliat vice is neither necessary nor ii.scful. Personal purity in man and woman must be insisted upon with all the empliasis of tiie love of God, the wratii to come, and the judgment of the Almigiity. Our young people must be admonished of the disastrous recoil of promising wickechies", or the seductive temptation will prove their ruin. We would couosel the recognition and cuUivation of indivi- dual responsibility in relation to all the means of grace, and in them nil the maintenance of happy and vital communion with (!od iis the true .safe- guard against formalism. It is also well that we should guard ourselves agninst the subtle ten- dency to narrow our interest and solicitude to our merely local church affairs. God would educate us into largeness, and would have us partners and helpers together witli Himself in all the wide enterprises of His king- dom. Our vario-.,.s 'uissionary fields, domestic and foreij.,n, merit our intelligent and jirayerful suj-port, and together- with otiier connexional interests, furnish tiie opportunity for our benefactions. Our connexioiml periodicals siiould find an incretisingly generous sup- port from all our people, and our aim should be to hav(^ them guests in every home. As we deliiierately plan to save human souls, so slioulil «e plan for the iiitrodtu'tion of .Methodist literature, liistory and bingraphy into our liomes and Sunday-schools, in order that our young people espe- cially leay get tiie s[)iritual benefit and inspiiation, and partake of tlio enthusiasm of the unicpie and providential hist( ly of our Church. We ,'isk you to unite with u.s in the prayer th it this year may be one signalized l)y extensive revivals of religion in all parts of tiiis Pro^illce. To this end we need to have nnuh before our miinls the suj>renie peiil of human souls, the glory of (iod, and the importanc(^ of a delicate adjust- ment of ourselves tfi tht; mind and methods of tlie Holy Spirit.
