In common with many others, my election has been voided, because of illegal acts on the part of Agents, for whom the law holds me responsible ; but my opponents, having no reason to believe that I had authorized or was cognizant of such acts, made no attempt to press any personal charges against me, and the Judge honorably exonerated me from all blame. Believing that a most rigid scrutiny would have still left me a majority over my opponent, Mr. Lawson, and that I was therefore the free choice of the people on that occasion, I can appeal to you now with the utmost confi- dence for re-election. • In the few months that have passed since last election, the political situ- ation has not materially chnnged. The great issue on which you are called upon to vote is still the same. But you have this advantage now in judging between the parties claiming your suffrages which you had not before. You have had some experience of the present Government and their manner of conducting public affairs, and you can more readily compare them with their predecessors. I feel sure that your verdict will be the same as that of every other Constituency that has, as yet, had the opportunity of pronouncing judg- ment, namely : That the Governmeut of Mr. McKenzie deserves the sup- port and confidence of the people of Canada. The Keformers of Soutli Norfolk having again done me the honor of nom- inating me to be their candidate, I respectfully ask for the support of every friend of good Government. . My principles are the same, and I renew every pledge I gave you in January. I am strongly in favor of a Eeciprocity Treaty with the United States which will put us on au equal footing with them, and shall therefore, if hon- ored with your suffrages, give the present draft of Treaty or any other measure that will secure for us commercial relations with the States, my moot earnest consideration when it comes before the House. I regret that a prolonged absence from the Country this summer prevent- ed me fiom visiting and increasing my too limited acquaintance with you, as I would have v. ished to do, but I hope between now and polling day to meet with most of you, and to confer with you personally, on the various public questions of the day.
