 ADVANTAGES OF DIPPING.

 It is important, in orijcc to guiii success in sliecp hiisbaiidr.v. to be assured that 
 be sheep are i- a healthy conditiou when brought into winter quarters. Under 
 lose housing conditions infection runs rife and parasites increase at an alarming 
 kte. This is especially true of tie mite, causing slieep scab, the louse and the sheep 
 Ick. The wool, being long in the winter, the tick is protected and, consequently, 
 tceiyes greater opportunity for rapid growtli and for roproduction of honles of its 
 ^'n Iiind. Its ravages, however, can be always lessened niul, to a large extent, entinly 
 ■eventd by fall dipping. 
 
 If any sheop in the flock should appear to be infected with scab, that sheep should, 
 rithout delay. Iw -"-lated from the hoaltliy ones. The wool should be clipped from 
 hat portion of the oody directly affected with the disease, so as to permit the dip 
 bmmg in full - ontact with the scabby skin. The sheep should at onco be dipped in 
 bnie reliable material twic(! at least, and three times still better, at intervals of ten 
 bys. A longer period may elapse between the second and third dippings. The 
 Inngent, precautionary measures of quarantine and compulsory clipping of infected 
 fcses a,lopted and pursued by the Dominion Departin.>nt of Agriculture has. however, 
 'appily kept in subjection this most dread dineaRp. 
 
 It should be explained that sheep scab is a contagious diseaie governed by the 
 Inimal Contagious Diseases' Act and that the owner of a flock in which an outbreak 
 *s been discovered is bound to report the fact to the Department. Failure to make 
 ueh report involves the penalty of a fine of not more than $200.00.

 Dips can be clasnificd according to k^o i.ature of the poison they contain, ns 
 carbolic, arsenic and tobacco, jlost standard proprietary dips will produce effective 
 r2sults, providing the directions of the manufacturers are carefully followed. No 
 dip should be purcliased without a thorough investigation of its merits. The 
 beginner, however, had best guard against purchasing everything his druggist may 
 sell him, since there are many materials on the market locally that are olmost worth- 
 less and arc palmed off on the unsophisticated as " just as good." To bo assured of 
 obtaining a good (|uality of dip, the farmer wlio raises a small number of slioep 
 should club together with others »o as to make it worth while to buy directly from 
 the manufacturer. By so doing the cost of purchase would be considerably reduced. 
 
 For a small Hock of sheep it will not be necessary to construct an elaborate 
 dipping apparatus. A tub or trough, large enough to hold a sheep, will answer the 
 purpose. There should also lie a small pen connected with the dipping trough :inil 
 with a iloor sloping toward the latter, wherein the sheep may be permitted to dnin. 
 The wool orpocially if long, will soak up a large quantity of dip, a part of which '-an 
 be saved by keeping the sheep in a draining pen for several minutes.
