The Society shall consist of the G^raduates and Under- graduates of King's College and the University of Toronto, and of the k^tudents of University College. , 2. It shall be called THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY. 3. The objects of the Society shall bp : the encourage- ment of Literary and Scientific pursuits pmong its members, by discussions, original essays, and readings from English authors. 4. No controverted point in religion or Canadian party- politics, shall be admitted for discussion in the Society. 5. The President and Professors of University College shall be the Patrons of the Society, and shall have the right of attendance at all its meetings. Section IL- Members. 1. The Society shall consist of Ordinary, Honorary, Cor- responding, and Life Members. 10 THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE in 2. Ordinary Members shall consist of Graduates, Under- graduates, and Students. ' , 3. Honorary Members shall consist of Graduates, as hereinafter determined, and such Ordinary Members as the Society may elect. , 4. Graduates of King's College and the University of Toronto, who have already (a) taken a higher degree than Bacjiclor of Arts in the same, shall be Honorary Members. 5. Ordinary Members, upon taking a higher degree than Bachelor in any of the Faculties, at the University of To- ronto, shall thereby become Honorary Members. 6. Corresponding Members shall consist of such Gradu- ates and Undergraduates, not resident in Toronto, as may be desirous of contributing to the objects of the Society. 7. Life Members shall consist of such Ordinary Members us shall have subscribed for four years to the funds of the Soci'ety. 8. Candidates for Membership, having been previously nominated, shall be ballotted for at the ensuing Ordinary Meeting ; the votes .of a majority present shall suffice for their election. 0. Occasional Students shall have the right to continue members of the Society only so long as they attend Univer- sity College, unless elected Honorary Members. (a) February 22n(l, 1854. LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY. 11 Seetion III.— Officers. 1 . The Officers shall constitute the General Committee of the Society, and shall consist of a President, two Vice-Presi- dents, a Secretary, a Treasurer, a Curator, and four Coun- cillors — two of whom shall be Graduates. 2. The election of officers shall take place annually, by ballot, at the ordinary meeting preceding the close of the academic year. 8. Members to be eligible lor offices in the Society, shall be nominated at the ordinary meeting preceding the elec- tion ; and such as are nominated for superior offices, and not elected thereto, shall be eligible for election as Council- lors. 4. The General Committee shall make by-laws for con- ducting thejbusiness of meetings, and shall likewise make the appointments for ordinary meetings. 5. The President, or, in his absence, one of the Vice- Presidents, shall preside at all meetings of the Society, and shall decide questions of order, subject to an appeal to the meeting. 6. The Secretary shall keep the minutes, and conduct the correspondence of the Society and General Committee, and notify Debaters, Essayists, and Readers, of their appoint- ment. 7. The Treasurer shall receive and account for all moneys belonging to the Society, and notify members of the fees in arrear. ill 12 THE UNIVERSITY COLLKGK 8. The Curator shall have charge of the Reading Room, and shall have authority, to enforce the rules, subject to an appeal to the General Committee. 9. Vacancies in the General Committee shall be filled up in the same manner as at the Annual Elections. Section IV.— Meetings. 1. The meetings of the Society shall be held on every Friday evening, during the continuance of Lectures, at half- past seven o'clock. 2. The Essayist, Readers, and Debaters, shall be an- nounced at the meeting prcv^ious to that for which they are appointed. 8. The Opener shall have the right to reply at the dose of the debate ; but no other member shall speak more than once. 4. Each member in speaking shall address the Chair. 5. Every fourth Meeting shall be . considered a public Meeting, to which the Patrons shall be invited ; the Society, however, shall have power to defer or omit any of these pub- lic meetings. (). The Essayist, Readers, and Debaters, for public meet- ings, shall be elected by ballot three weeks before such meet- ings. The Debaters shall select their subject, and report the same to the Society, one week after their election ; in default thereof, the Society shall choose a subject for them. f tItERARY AND SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY. Id 7. The Elections for public meetings shall be arranged alternately, thus : An Essayist, and six Debaters for one meeting ; for that following, an Essayist, three Readers, and four Debaters. 8. At the close of each debate, the chairman may sum up before putting the question to the vote of the meeting; and \in case of an equal division, he shall have the casting vote. \ 9. I^he General Committee shall have authority to call a Special Meeting of the Society at any time, and for any purpose, by giving due notice thereof. Section Y. -Prizes OflTered by the College Council. 1 . No member shall be entitled to vote at the awarding of the prizes for public speaking and public reading, who has not attended at least, one-half of the Society's meetings during the year. / 2. The decisions in regard to the above prizes shall be I taken separately, in the following manner: Each member entitled to vote, shall write the names of those six whom he Considers the most proficient in each department ; a second ballot shall then be taken, each member voting for one of the six thus chosen, and he, who obtains a majority of the votes cast, shall be declared the successful competitor ; — if no choice be made on this ballot, the names of the two having the smallest number of votes shall be struck off the list, and so on, till a majority of votes be cast for on eof the vcandidates, 3. Section VI.- Reading Room. 1. The Reading Room shall be open daily, (Sundays excepted,) from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. 2. The General Committee may from time to time make such additions to the periodicals, in the Reading Room as they may deem proper. ' 3. Members shall avoid such discussions or conversations as may distract those persons present in the room. 4. No periodical shall be removed from the Reading Room. Seetion VII.— Finance. 1. The annual subscription shall be one dollar, to be paid to the Treasurer before the end of the first term ; and if not then paid the defaulter may be struck off the Roll. 2. Matriculated and Occasional Students of University College, not members of the Society, shall be admissible to the Reading-Room on an annual payment of 50cts. Section YIII.— Alterations in the Laws 1. Alterations in the laws shall be discussed only at the last meeting in each term, or such other meeting as the General Committee may appoint, after having been an- nounced at a previous meeting. 2.
