TIIK chmrh of the UnitiMi Br-ethriMi in Christ hml its or- igin (h)fin^ the latter half of the eighteenth eentnry in a revival movement that spread over Kastern Pennsyl- vania anower- ful sermon by Mr. Boehm at one of their tneetitigs, Mr. Otter- hein arose and threw his arms around Mr. Boehm and saited, containing the doctrine and rules of the church, the Conference desiring that these, together with the Word of God, should l)e strictly ob- serv«'d, and admonishing the memh 'rship in the following manner: God is a Gocl of oi*der; but where there is no order and no church discipline, the spirit of love and charity will be lost. Therefore, brethren, we beseech you to follow the example of our Lord, as it is written, "Be kindly affectioned one to an«)ther with brotherly love: in hcmor preferring one another." Let the mind \w in ytm which was in Christ, who took upon hiu) the form of a servant, hund>led himself, and becaine obeiiity have eiiual r«'pr«'s»*ntation with the Ministry in both the annual and gtMUM-al rttnfcrences. ARTKU.K II. iVt' CKKATKKV AND I'ROVIHKNCK, We iM'Iieve that this triune frfnl created the heavens and the earth and all that in ^hem is. visible and Invisihle; that he sustains, protects and governs these, with gracious regard for the welfare of man, t«»the glory of His nan«e. ARTICLE III. OK .IB8UH CHKIHT We >)elieve in .Tesus Christ; that he Is very G«h1 and man; that he U'canie incarnate hy the power of the Holy Ghost and was lM»rn of the Virgin Mary; th.at He is the .Saviour and Mediator of the whole human rac?, if thev with full faith accept the grace pr(»ffered in Jesus; that this .Jesus suffered and died on the cross for us. Was hiu-ied, rose again on the thii-d day, ascended into Heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God, to intercede for us and that he will come again at the last day to judge the living and the dead. ARTICLE IV. OK THE HOLY OHOHT. ARTICLE VII. OF THE HACKAMENTtJ. We believe that the sacraments, baptism and the laird's supper are to be used in the chm-ch, and should be practised bv all Christians; but the mode of Ixiptism and the manner of observing the Lord's Supper are always left to the judgment and understanding of each individ ai. Also, the Itaptisni of children shall be left to the judgment of l)elieving parents. The example of the "washing of feet" is to be left t:^ the judgment of each one, to practice or not. ARTICLE VIII. OF DEPRAVITY. We l)elieve that man is fallen fi-om his original righteous- ness, and, ai)art from the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, is not only entirely destitute of holii t ss, but is inclined to evil, and only evil, and that (^ontitmally ; a id that except a man l>e lK>rn again he cannot see the kingdom of Heaven. — «-- ARTICLE IX. ARTICLE X. OF KEWENERATION AND ADOPTIOX. We believe that regeneration is the renewal of the heart of man after the image of (Jod, through the word, by the act of the Holy Ghost, I)y which the believer receives the spirit of ;uloption and is enabled to serve God with the will and the affections. I I ARTICLE XI. OF 8ANCTIFICATION. We believe that Sanctification is the work of God's grnce, througli the word and the Spirit, by which those who have been born again are separated in their acts, words, and thoughts from sin, and are enabled to live unto God and to follow holiness, without which no man shall see the I^>rd. ARTICLE XII. OF THE CHRISTIAN SABBATH. We believe that the Christian Sabbath is divinely ap- pointed; that it isconunemorative of our Lord's i'esurrecti«m from the grave, and is an emblem of our eternal rest; that it is essential to the welfare of the civil comnnmity, and to the permanence and growth of the Christian church, and that it should be reverently observed as a day t>f holy rest and social and public worship. ARTICLE XIII. OF THE FUTURE STATE. We believe in the resurrection of the deati ; the future general judgment, and an eternal state of rewards, in which the righteous dwell in endless life, and the wicked in endless punishment.
