CHARLTON ASSISTANT R, KING, B.A. REPORT OF THE LIBRARY COMMITTEE June \%tt >899, to October 31st, J 900 To the Medical Faculty : Gentlemen,— The Library Committee begs to report upon the work done in the Medical Library during the year ending October 31st. As ought to be expected, the statistics indicate an increase of usefuhiess in all directions for the past year over the preceding one. The tables appended show the operation of the Library, its accessions, circulation, etc. It is a satisfaction to report that the attendance has so increased that it has necessitated greater accommodation for readers. Owing to the great generosity of Lord Strathcona and Mount Royal, the Medical Faculty have been able, besides making improvements in the Medical College, to enlarge their library. A fire-proof stack room is being built with a capacity for 40,000 volumes. The present Faculty room, stack room and students' reading room will be hereafter used as reading-rooms, thus making a charming suite of rooms. If it had not been for this timely assistance of Lord Strathcona the work of the library would have greatly suffered owing to its present crowded condition. Beneath the new stack room will be a fine storage room, where the work of packing for shipping, etc., can be carried on. The Committee feel that they are deeply indebted to Lord Strathcona for coming so generously to the aid of their Faculty, and thus they are enabled to carry out improvements and enlarge- ments that were very necessary. Three years ago, in connection with this and other medical libraries, a Medical Librarian's Association was started. This Association now numbers all the leading medical libraries on this continent and is adding to its numbers those of other countries. On June 4th, igcx), the third annual meeting was held at the Hotel Traymore, Atlantic City, Dr. G. M. Gould, of Phila- delphia, who has done so much for medical libraries, presiding. The report of the Executive Conunittee for the year showed that excellent work had been done. In speaking of the Exchange Bureau Dr. Gould showed that every library member of the Association had received several times the value of their contribu- tion to the Exchange. The forming of a Medical Librarians' Association has done a great deal of good. We have received from many libraries belonging to the Association a large number of journals, so that we have been able to complete a number of our files ; that of the Journal of the American Medical Association has been completed almost from the beginning. A large number of new sets have also been started. We have sent out a number of our duplicates in exchange and also several boxes to the Exchange. It has been gratifying to the Committee to find that from .several sources have come letters asking for particulars of the system used here by the Faculty in the classifying and running of their library. There has also been some correspondence with other medical librarians who are ju.st starting new libraries. The medical library movement may still be said to be in the formative stage, but it is rapidly spreading so as to cover the broadest possible field and to be of use to the profession. The Travelling Library, which the committee inaugurated three years ago by supplying doctors at a distance with books, has suffered for want of funds ; the demand has been greater than we could supply. It is earnestly hoped that some one will help the Medical Library in an undertaking of such vital importance. Papers written by the Medical Staff have this year been more widely distributed than before; we are now in touch with all the leading German , French, English and American Universities, as well as a few of the other foreign universities. Fifty bound copies besides hundreds of unlx)und copies have been distributed. As the Library is entirely supported by the Medical Faculty, the grant towards its maintenance is necessarily small, and were it not for the kindness of the Professors, who have most generously helped to build up the Ubrary, the number of works would be wholly out of proportion to the demand. While General libraries are endowed, Medical libraries have rather suffered from neglect, but the time, we hope, has come when Medical libraries shall receive the attention which their vast importance demands. There is no doubt that a good medical library which can furnish the best literature on every subject tends to raise the scientific character of the medical profession and so is an undisputable gain to the public. Professor James Stewart has presented a number of valuable works on the Brain and Nervous System. Professor T. C. Cameron has supplied the deficiencies in the obstetrical department in a most generous manner, besides his valuable gift of Nothnagel System of Medicine. Busts of Hippocrates and ^sculapius, have been presented to the library by Professors Roddick, Armstrong and Buller. This forms the nucleus of what we hope will soon be a fine collection of the Masters of Medicine. No more appropriate place for the preservation of medical antiquaria can be tound than on the walls and cases of the Medical Library, where they will not only be preserved with care but will also serve as object lessons for the coming generations of medical men. Professor Shepherd has added to our valuable collection of letters from celebrated phy.sicians, and has also given a picture of Burnside, the residence of the late Hon. James McGill. Dr. Forbes, while in New York, very kindly interested him- self in obtaining for our library a complete set of the Transactions of Orthopoedics. Mr. McCulloch has presented a rare and historical picture representing a scene at New Glasgow, during the election of his father the late Mr. McCulloch, M.D. Mr. W. F. Odell, of Truro, Nova Scotia, has presented the Faculty with the library of the late Dr. Odell, consisting of close upon a hundred volumes of medical writings of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The Committee are greatly indebted to the Teaching Staff of the Post Graduates, who have in a most disinterested manner placed the fees obtained from the Post Graduate Course at the disposal of the Library Committee. The Committee feel that the entire Medical Faculty will greatly appreciate this generous action of the Post Graduate's staff, v j have been willing to forego their own fees in order to benefit the library. The great amount of research work being done in the laboratories calls for a well-equipped library. To the editors of the Montreal Medical Journal the Library is greatly indebted for their reprints and Journals and for their kindness in many ways. Dr. J. C. Merrill, Major and Surgeon U. S. Army, has by his thoughtful courtesy, greatly assisted us by allowing us access to his valuable library at Washington. 8 STATISTICS. 1 899- 1 900. • June ist, 18 gg, to October 31st, igoo.
