Ittdreia'^i lenetjolent Jor^tg* riu' vaiit'd mignitioiis of .Sootehnieii have j^'iven rise to several * pt'culiar a^.socifttions in tliP lands of tlicir adoption. ^ i thoir disporsious tliroughout tlio world, they have ever i-arried wi. tl»em many of tlie institutions and -ynipathies characterisitif of their fatherland. Tlie ohcrislied impressions of youth and i auhoid, of country and kindred, have sought development, and. in many ca'iCri, have firmly eatai*ii.ilied themselves by vigorous soi-ieties of d'.Verent tf descrip' ns, in every eomniunity of our coun rymen. It is to the love of the plact' of our hirth. and to our luitaral affection for home scenes, that we attribute the founding of our " Curling Clubs." our •' Burns' Anniversaries." ■• Friendly," and more especially our St. Andrew's Societies." The liardshii)s endured by the early j>ionecrs of civilization in this western world, have tended to a most benelicent end. " Fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind," and the dictates of human sympa- thy have, tlierefore, eveiywhere originated the brightest and best of all our associations — " the St. Andrew's Society," — the predominant feature of which is the manifestation of love in action ; — benevolence, the guiding principle ; while at the same time, the kindly feeling engendered among the associated merabeis, is not the least desirable of its effects. Whatever tends to throw any light on the origin and progress, the cultivation and expansion of the best sympathies of our nature, must commend itself to the mind of every Scotchman. The St. Andrew's Society of Hamilton, therefore, have determined to publish along with the rules of the Society, some short account of 6 CONSTITUTION OF THE HAMILTON f its origin ami progress, ami the names of those who have been in- trusted with the iluticF of office, ami of all others who have been " honorably " connected witli it. The earliest record dates as far back as 183/5. During that year the Scotch residents of Hamilton incorporated themselves with the members of the " United St. Andrew's Society of Ancaster, Dundas and Flamboro," into a new Society, styled the " District of Gore St. Andrew's Benevolent Society." The objects of the Association are briefly but distinctly stated in the following paragraph, taken from the basis of Union : — " That the object of the Society shall be to afford advice to emigrants from Scotland, and pecuniary aid to poor persons from that country, when absolutely necessary ; with the view of diverting cliarity to worthy objects on the one hand, and to prevent imposition on the other." The cenistitutiou was atloptod at a general meeting, held in Ham- ilton, on the 12tii .lanuary, 18'5(), the principal features of which still form the rules for the government of the Society. At that general meeting the following office-bearers were ap- pointed : Mil. JOHN YOUNG, of Hamilton. Treit.-Jnin t Secretarie.'i. In the year ISofi, the members of the Gore District St. Andrew's Society, formed themselves into a "Hamilton St. Andrew's Benevo- lent Society," and on St. Andrew's Day of that year, the under- named gentlemen were elected Office-bearers for the ensuing year : W.
