WHEN I first began to write the follow- ing Work, I thought of nothing more tha« to compose a few verses for my own amuse- ment; but on hearing me read and sing se- veral of the Hymns, many of my friends requested that they should be printed. At their continued solicitation, therefore, not- withstanding the small portion of educa- tion with which I have been favoured, and without the expectation of pleasing every body, I consented; and they are now offer- ed to the publick, imperfect as they are, leaving the reader to form his own opinion of their merit. I have had much pleasure and consola- tion in composing these Hymns; and if others can find the same satisfaction in pe- rusing or singing them, I shall consider my- self abundantly recompensed for my trouble, 1 pray God, that they may not only please the fancy, but enlighten the hearts of their readers.
