PALM SUNDAY

I. Solemn Ceremony

Preparations

Red vestments are used,1 therefore D and SD do not wear folded

vestments but vest in dalmatic and tunic. Everything is arranged

as for an ordinary Solemn Mass. In addition, the following prepara-

tions are made

:

A. In the sacristy:

1. Three amices, albs, cinctures, violet maniples, and stoles

for

the Deacons of the Passion

2. Amice, alb, cincture, red tunic for the extra Subdeacon

3. Three books for the Passion

B. In the sanctuary:

1. Ewer, basin, and towel for washing the C’s hands after

the distribution of palms

2. Aspergil and aspersory

3. A copy of the Holy Week Missal on the credence table

4. The processional cross (uncovered) near the credence table

5. On the floor near the Communion rail is a table covered with

a white cloth; on this are placed the palms.3 On the top

there may be specially prepared palms for the Ministers. The

palms are covered with a white veil.

6. On the altar, branches of palms may be used in place of

flowers

7. For the singing of the Passion, three lecterns are placed near

the wall on the Gospel side of the sanctuary. These are not

to be covered. While the Gradual and Tract are being sung

by choir, the MC arranges the lecterns where the Gospel is

usually sung. After the Passion has been sung, he moves the

lecterns back to their original position.

8. On the sedilia, purple vestments for the Mass. D and SD
wear dalmatic and tunic for the Mass of the Second Sunday

in Passiontide.

Acolytes

1. BLESSING OF PALMS

Go to the altar as for an ordinary Solemn Mass. Place your

candles on the credence table and then

:

1A: Pick up the Holy Week Missal and walk at the right of 2A

to the center of the altar, genuflect, turn right, and walk

to the table covered with palms, standing at the right of

the MC.

2A: Pick up the aspergil and aspersory and walk at the left

of 1A to the center of the altar, genuflect, turn left, and

walk to the table covered with palms, standing at the

left of the T.

After the choir has finished singing the antiphon Hosanna filio

David, 1A opens the book to the Oration Benedic, quaesumus

,

Domine, and holds the book in front of the C while he sings the

Oration. He then returns to his place at the right of the MC.

While the C is singing the Oration, 2A hands the aspergil to the

MC. He remains next to the MC until the D gives the aspergil
back to him. He then returns to his place at the left of the T.

2. DISTRIBUTION OF PALMS

The AA lead the rest of the Ministers back to the altar after

the palms have been sprinkled and incensed. They genuflect all

together and go to the credence table where they place the Missal

and the aspergil and aspersory. They then return to their usual

positions.

The AA line up behind the clergy for the reception of their

palms. After the D and SD have received their palms, the AA

genuflect on the floor, go up the steps and kneel on the platform.

For the reception of their palms, the AA line up behind the MC

and the T who are standing behind the clergy. After the MC and
the T have received their palms, the AA genuflect on the floor,

go up the steps and kneel on the platform. They receive the palms

from the C, kissing the palm first and then the C’s hand. They

rise, go to the foot of the altar, genuflect together, and return

to the credence table where they set their palms on the table. Then

the 1A takes one piece of palm and puts it on the altar in the

center, a little to the Epistle side, next to the D’s palm.

THE GOSPEL

Near the end of the distribution of the palms, the 1A picks up

the finger towel from the credence table and the 2A takes the basin

and ewer. When the Ministers come to the center at the foot of

the altar, the AA go over and wash the Cs hands. Afterwards they

return the towel, basin, and ewer to the credence table and pick

up their candles and move into the Gospel formation at the foot

of the altar. Regular Gospel movement follows. After the Gospel,

they follow the D, MC, and T back to the altar and wait till the

SD has returned the Gospel book to the MC. Then all genuflect

together. The AA then turn and go to the center of the sanctuary

near the Communion rail and stand facing the altar, leaving room

between them for the extra SD who is carrying the cross.

THE PROCESSION

When the D intones Procedamus in pace, the AA turn in toward
the extra SD and follow the T in the procession through the church.

When they return to the sanctuary, they genuflect and take their

candles back to the credence table. Then the 1A again picks up the

Holy Week Missal and comes to the center at the foot of the altar

where he genuflects and goes up to the top step. There he opens the

book to the final Oration. When the C has finished singing it, the

1A turns and goes back down the steps, genuflects, and returns to

the credence table where he leaves the book. The AA then go to

the sedilia and help the D and SD with their maniples, afterwards
returning to their places.

THE MASS

Mass is as usual until the Passion. As the Passion singers kneel

to say the Mnnda cor meum, the AA move into the regular Gospel

formation. They do not carry their candles. After the C has given

the Passion singers the blessing, the AA lead them to the Gospel

position where they remain facing the lecterns, leaving room

between them for the three Passion singers and the MC. At the

words emisit spiritum, the AA kneel facing the lecterns. When the

Passion is over, the AA lead the formation back to the altar where

they all genuflect together. The AA then return to their places.

The rest of the Mass is as usual until the blessing at the end of

the Mass. After the C gives the blessing, the AA pick up their

candles immediately and go to the foot of the altar, leaving room

between them for the SD, C, D, and MC. They all genuflect

together, and after the bow to the clergy the AA lead the Ministers

to the sacristy.

II. The Ceremony Without Deacon and

Subdeacon

Preparations

A. In the sacristy:

1. Three surplices for the SS

2. Amice, alb, cincture, red stole and cope for the C4

3. Thurible and boat

4. Aspersory and aspergil

5. Missal (Ordo Hebdomadae)

B. On the altar

:

1. Crucifix

2. Six lighted candles

3. If the ceremonies will be conducted without singing, copies of

the antiphons to be recited during the procession are provided

for the C and SS.

palms to be blessed

The Servers

A. HIGH MASS

1 . Blessing of Palms

In the sacristy, vest in cassock and surplice. At the proper time

lead the procession to the altar. In this procession

:

IS: Carry the aspergil and aspersory and walk at the left of

the C.

2S: Carry the Holy Week Missal and walk at the right of the C.

3S: Carry the thurible and boat and lead the procession to the

altar.

At the center, all genuflect on the floor, the IS at the left of the

C, the 2S at the right, and the 3S at the right of the 2S. The 2S

takes the biretta from the C and puts it on the step. All turn

toward the C and the 3S leads the procession to the table covered

with palms. At the table the 3S goes left, leaving room between

himself and the C for the 2S. The IS goes to the right of the C.

After the choir has sung the antiphon Hosanna filio David:

2S: Step in front of the C and open the book to the Oration

Benedic, quaesumus, Domine. Hold it while the C sings the Oration

;

then return to your place.

IS: At the end of the Oration, hand the aspergil to the C and

assist him in sprinkling the palms, holding the edge of the cope.

Accompany him if he goes down the aisle of the church. Take

the aspergil from him after the sprinkling and return to your place.

Hold the edge of the cope while the C puts incense into the thurible.

3S: After the sprinkling, present the thurible to the C to be
filled. Assist him in incensing the palms by holding the edge of

his cope. Accompany him if he goes down the aisle of the church.

Take the thurible from the C after the incensations.

2. Distribution of Palms

When the incensation of the palms is finished, all return to

the altar. Then:

3S: Lead the procession back to the altar. Go right at the foot

of the altar, leaving room between you and the C for the 2S.

After the genuflection, take the thurible and boat to the sacristy

and return to the center at the foot of the altar. Stand at the

right of the IS. Genuflect with him and go up the steps. Kneel

at the edge of the platform and receive your palm from the C.

2S : Walk at the right of the C back to the altar. Genuflect with

the rest. Put the book on the credence table and go to the table

covered with palms and pick up an armful of palms. Give them

to the C on the platform and then kneel on the edge of the plat-

form at the right of the 3S. Receive your palm from the C.

IS: Walk at the left of the C back to the altar. Genuflect with

the rest and take the aspergil and aspersory to the credence table.

Come back to the center at the foot of the altar and wait till the

3S comes to your right. Genuflect with him, go up the steps, and

kneel on the edge of the platform. Receive your palm from the C.

When the SS receive their palms from the C, they kiss the palm

first and then the C’s hand. After the SS have received their palms,

the IS and 2S go with the C to distribute palms to the people.

They supply him with palms from the table when necessary.

3. The Gospel

After the palms have been distributed

:

3S : Toward the end of the distribution, go to the credence table.

Pick up the ewer and basin and put the towel over your left arm.

When the C comes to the Epistle corner, wash his hands. Then take

the ewer, basin, and towel back to the credence table and go to the

sacristy for the thurible and boat.

2S: When you come back to the altar after the distribution of

palms genuflect with the rest and hold the edge of the C’s cope

while he washes his hands. After this, change the book to the

Gospel side. Wait there to make the responses to the Gospel. Then

get two pieces of palm and place them near the center of the

altar on the Epistle side. Go down the steps on the Epistle side

and stand at the left of the 3S.

IS: Walk at the right of the C back to the altar, genuflect, and

go to the Epistle corner with him. Take the towel off the 3S’s arm

and present it to the C after he washes his hands. Then go to the

credence table and take up the processional cross. Go to the center

of the sanctuary, near the Communion rail, and stand facing the

altar.

4. The Procession

When the C has finished the Gospel, he comes to the center of

the altar. Then

:

3S : Go up at the right of the 2S and present the thurible to the

C to be filled. Then go to the center of the sanctuary between the

CB and Communion rail. Stand there facing the altar. When the

C intones Procedamus in pace

,

turn right and lead the procession

through the church. Upon arrival back at the altar, go right at the

bottom of the steps, a little to the Epistle side. Genuflect with the

C and the 2S and take the thurible and boat to the sacristy. Return

to the altar and change the book back to the Epistle side.

2S: Go up the steps at the left of the 3S. Hold the cope while

the C puts incense into the thurible. Then pick up the palms from

the altar and give one to the C. Turn when the C does and face

the people. After the C intones Procedamus in pace
,
go down the

steps with him, genuflect, picking up the biretta as you do so. Give

the biretta to the C and walk in the procession at his left, holding

your palm in your left hand. When you return to the altar, take

the C’s biretta and palm, genuflect with him, and go to the credence

table. Place the C’s palm on the credence table and then go to the

sedilia. Place the C’s biretta on the sedilia and wait there till the

C arrives. Assist him in vesting; then lead him to the altar at the

left of the IS for the Mass.

IS: When the C intones the Procedamus in pace
,
turn right and

follow the 3S in the procession. When you return to the altar, go

to the credence table without genuflecting. Pick up the Missal.

When the C goes up to the platform, come to the center, genuflect,

and go up the steps. Open the book to the final Oration Domine,

Jesu Christe and hold the book while the C sings it. Place the book

on the Missal stand. Then go down the steps with the C, genuflect,

and go with him to the sedilia. Assist the C in vesting for Mass;

then lead him back to the altar at the right of the 2S.

5. The Mass

Observe the rules of serving at High Mass. When the C kneels

on the platform at the Gospel corner during the Passion, kneel

on the step until he rises again. During the Postcommunion, the

IS goes to the sedilia and picks up the C’s biretta. After the Bless-

ing at the end of Mass, the C comes down the steps, they all

genuflect together, and the SS lead the C to the sacristy.

B. LOW MASS

If there is no choir to sing the various chants indicated, the

ceremony will be the same as above, with the following exceptions

:

1. When the 2S brings the palms to the altar just before the

procession begins, he brings also the copies of the antiphons for

the C and himself, for they will recite the antiphons during the

procession.

2. Together with the C the SS will read the Hosanna filio David

and the antiphons and Psalms for the distribution of the palms.

3. When the C says Procedamus in pace, answer, In nomine

Christi. Amen.

4. During the Mass follow the rules for serving at Low Mass.



HOLY THURSDAY

I. Solemn Ceremony

Preparations

The following are in addition to the preparations ordinarily

made for Solemn Mass. White vestments are used.

A. In the sacristy:

1. Amice, alb, cincture, and white tunic for the SD who is to

carry the processional cross

2. White stoles for any priests and deacons who will receive

Holy Communion

3. A white cope to be worn by the C during the procession

4. A second thurible and boat

5. Violet stoles for the C and D to be used while stripping
the altars

6. Humeral veil to be used while transferring the ciboria; if a

priest other than the C transfers the ciboria, a surplice and

a white stole are also provided.

B. In the sanctuary:

1. On the credence table:

a) One or more ciboria containing Hosts to be consecrated

for the priests and people communicating today and on

Good Friday. The Hosts used on these two days should

be consecrated at this Mass.

b) A wooden clapper

c) An umbella near by

d) A processional cross veiled in violet

e) Candles for those who will go in procession

/) Breviaries or Libers containing Compline for the Major

Ministers.

2. On the altar:

a) A violet veil on the altar Cross

C. Outside the sanctuary

:

A canopy and banner to be used in the procession

D. The Repository

:

A suitable place should be prepared in some chapel or at some

altar of the church for the solemn reposition of the Blessed Sacra-

ment. It should be fittingly decorated with veils, lights, and flowers

;

however, relics, statues, and pictures are forbidden.

At the Repository there should be a receptacle for the Blessed

Sacrament. It should be so constructed that the ciborium is not

visible when placed in it. It should have a lock and key, but

should be left open until the Blessed Sacrament is reposed in it.

In front of the receptacle there should be an altar or table on

which the ciborium can be set before being reposed. A single altar

cloth suffices to cover it. A white antependium should be used.

Instead of a special container, the tabernacle of a side altar

may be used for the reposition. It should be covered with a white

tabernacle veil and have a canopy over it.

A corporal should be spread on the altar or table and another

within the container or tabernacle. A small table should be placed

nearby for the humeral veil. Steps should be provided, if needed,

to place the ciborium in the tabernacle. At least six candles should

be at the repository and should be lighted before the procession

arrives.

For the Washing of the Feet

If the Washing of the Feet is to take place, besides the usual

preparations, the following are also needed

:

A. In the sanctuary :

1. A credence table covered with a white cloth on the Epistle

side of the sanctuary

2. A long bench or twelve chairs at a suitable place in or near

the sanctuary, preferably on the Gospel side

B. On the credence table:

1. A white apron

2. Two vessels of water

3. Two empty basins

4. Twelve towels on a plate or in a basket

5. A Lavabo dish, ewer, and hand towel

If it occurs, the Washing takes place after the short instruction.

In the middle of the sanctuary or near it are placed twelve chairs

or a long bench and a small table with towels and basins of water.

Acolytes1.

Mass

Observe the ordinary ceremonies during the Mass with these

exceptions

:

1. 2A: Ring the bells while the C is reciting the Gloria at the

altar. Use the clapper throughout the rest of the Mass.

2. AA: The Washing of the Feet may take place after the in-

struction which follows the Gospel.

3. AA: When bringing the wine and water to the altar after

Communion and when transferring the chalice veil genu-

flect before going up and after coming down from the

altar.

4. AA : Remain in your places until the Ministers go to the sedilia

after Mass.

Washing of the Feet

While the major Ministers are removing their maniples, go to

the table prepared with the basins and pitchers of water. When

the C comes to do the washing, 1A takes a pitcher of water and

2A a basin and they lead the C to the first man and kneel on either

side of him. As the C kneels before each man, 1A takes the pitcher

and pours a little water over the foot of the man into the basin

which is held underneath his foot by 2A, who is kneeling at the

C’s right. After the C dries his foot, move on to the next man. If

more water is needed, both AA go to get another pitcher and basin.

After the washing has been completed, go to the table, put

down the pitcher and basin, and assist with the water and towel

while the C washes his hands.

After Mass

Get your candles while the C is changing vestments at the sedilia

after Mass. When the Cross-bearer comes from the sacristy, go on

either side of him to the edge of the sanctuary.

Remain standing at the edge of the sanctuary until the C turns to

face the people after receiving the Blessed Sacrament from the D.

Then turn toward the Cross-bearer and lead the procession to the

Repository, walking very slowly.

At the Repository

Step to one side at the entrance to the Repository. When the

Ministers have gone up to the Repository and the TB’s have re-

turned to the center, move back to the center and stand behind

the TB’s, facing the altar. Remain there until the Blessed Sacrament

is reposed.

Returning to the Main Altar

After the Ministers rise and make a double genuflection, turn

toward the Cross-bearer and follow the TT back to the main altar.

The AA do not bow or genuflect when with the Cross-bearer. When

you have arrived before the main altar, step to either, side and,

when the Ministers have passed, move to the center again. After

the Ministers have genuflected and bowed to the choir, follow the

TT to the sacristy.

Transferring the Ciboria

Carrying your candles, lead the priest to the sanctuary when he

is ready. Genuflect with the priest and kneel on the lowest step.

Rise when the priest turns toward the people and, without genu-

flecting, lead him to the Repository or to the place prepared for

the Blessed Sacrament if there is no room at the Repository.

Stripping of the Altars

After the ciboria have been removed from the main altar, lead

the MC and Ministers to the sanctuary, but do not carry your
candles. Genuflect at the center when the C bows. When the C has

recited the antiphon Dividunt sibi and the first part of the Psalm

Deus mens, go around to the side steps and ascend to the platform.

As the D and SD hand you the things from the altar, take them

to the sacristy.

Assist the Ministers in the same manner while they strip the side

altars. Then return to the main altar, genuflect, bow to the choir,

and return to the sacristy.

Torchbearers

Observe the ordinary ceremonies for Solemn Mass until the

Ablutions. Then make a double genuflection before going to the

sacristy. Remain in the sacristy until the Mass is over.

1. Procession

While the Ministers are at the sedilia, follow the TT to the

sanctuary and line up behind them at the center. Do not genuflect,

but when the Ministers genuflect at the altar, kneel immediately

without going to your usual positions.

When the C has received the Blessed Sacrament from the D and
turns to face the people, rise, turn toward each other, and enter

the procession behind the choir (or clergy). Carry your torches in

your outside hand.

2. At the Repository

When you have arrived at the Repository, separate to allow the

Ministers to pass to the altar. Kneel facing each other while the

C passes with the Blessed Sacrament. Then rise, move back to the

center, and kneel facing the altar.

II. The Ceremony Without Deacon and

Subdeacon

Preparations

The following are additions to the ordinary preparations for Mass.

White vestments are used.

A. In the sacristy:

1. White stoles for any priests or deacons who will receive

Holy Communion

2. A white cope to be worn by the C during the procession

3. A violet stole to be used while stripping the altars

4. One or two thuribles and boats for the Mass and procession

5. Candles for the SS who may accompany the cross in the

procession

6. A humeral veil to be worn by the C while transferring the

ciboria
;
if a priest other than the C transfers them, a surplice

and white stole will be required.

B. In the sanctuary:

1. On the credence table

:

a) A white humeral veil

c) An umbella nearby

d) A processional Cross, veiled in violet

On the altar

:

a) A violet veil on the altar Cross

b) One or more ciboria with Hosts for those who will receive

Communion during the Mass and on Good Friday. The

Hosts used on these two days should be consecrated at this

Mass.

C. Outside the sanctuary

:

1. A canopy and banner to be used in the procession

2. Candles for those who will walk in procession

D. The Repository:

1. A corporal within and another in front of the receptacle or

tabernacle

2. An altar cloth (one is sufficient), a white tabernacle veil, and

white antependium

3. The key for the Repository

4. A small table for the humeral veil

5. Steps, if necessary, to be used while putting the ciborium in

the capsula or tabernacle

6. Fitting decorations— veils, lights, flowers. At least six candles
should be lighted at the Repository before the procession

arrives.

E. If the Washing of the Feet occurs see p. 10 for preparations.

The Servers

A. HIGH MASS

1. The Mass

Follow the ordinary rules for serving at High Mass, with the

following exceptions

:

IS: Ring the bells during the Gloria until the C has finished

reciting it. After the Gloria, use a clapper in place of the bells.

At the ablutions genuflect on the floor before going up to the altar

and again after coming down.

2S : If the 3S acts as MC, you must take the part of the T.

3S: During the Mass you may act as MC, observing the cere-

monies of an ordinary High Mass until after the Consecration,

when you genuflect before and after going up the steps. If you

do not act as MC, act as thurifer. Incense is used after the Prayers

at the Foot of the Altar when the C incenses the altar in the usual

way. Precede the C to the altar when he comes out for Mass,

genuflect in the middle in back of the C and kneel. When he

goes up to the altar, go with him and hand him the boat. Say

Benedicite, Pater reverende, as he puts incense into the thurible.

Take the boat back, hand it to the S nearest you, and assist the C

while he incenses the altar holding his chasuble while staying at

his right. Genuflect when you pass the middle of the altar. Take

the thurible from him when he is finished, go down the steps on the

Epistle side and turn right. Incense the C with three doubles,

bowing before and after. Take the boat from the S, genuflect in

the middle of the sanctuary, and return to the sacristy. Return

to the sanctuary with the thurible at the Sanctus and incense the

Blessed Sacrament for the elevation in the usual way. After the

Consecration, rise and return to the sacristy after genuflecting in

the middle.

Washing of the Feet

SS: While the C sits at the sedilia, place in the middle of the

sanctuary or near it twelve chairs or a long bench and a small

table with towels and basins of water. Then lead, two by two to

the sanctuary, the men1 who have been selected, genuflect to the

altar, bow to the C and direct them to their seats.

Genuflect, go to the sedilia and assist the C in removing his

chasuble and maniple. Proceed to the table on which are placed

towels and basin, however, first genuflecting to the altar.

IS: Present apron or towel to the C. With pitcher and basin

of water, kneel to the left of the C as he washes the right foot

of each man. Proceed in this fashion to each of the twelve men.

2S: Take a supply of towels from the table. Kneel to the right

of the C as he washes the right foot of each man. Present towel

to the C to wipe foot. Proceed in this fashion to each of the

twelve men.

SS: When finished arise with C and proceed to table. Set

is appointed, it would be proper if they would be dressed uniformly, preferably

in white cassocks.

down pitcher, basin and towels. Help C remove apron or towel.

Present C with towel, ewer and lavabo dish for washing his hands.

When finished go to center, genuflect and proceed to sedilia. Help

C put on maniple and chasuble. Return to foot of altar, genuflect

and remain there until C has finished the Oration, Adesto, Domine.

Move table and chairs to their former places, while 3S (who

has remained at the sedilia during this ceremony) leads the twelve

men, two by two, back to their original places. Return to the

foot of the altar as the C ascends to continue the Mass.

2. After Mass

IS: When the C goes to the sedilia after the Placeat, make a

double genuflection and go to the sacristy with the 2S. Return to

the sanctuary with the thurible and boat, walking in front of the

3S. When the C returns to the altar from the sedilia and kneels,

kneel in your place. Act as T during an ordinary benediction

incensation. After the incensation, take the thurible from the 2S,

return to your place, and kneel. When the C intones the Pange

lingua
,
rise and follow the 3S (or TB’s if there are any) in proces-

sion. Swing the thurible as you walk, partially facing the Blessed

Sacrament.

2S: Return from the sacristy with the white cope and put it

on the C’s shoulders at the sedilia. When you do this do not turn

your back to the Blessed Sacrament. Return to the altar with the

C, make a double genuflection, and kneel at his right. A usual

benediction incensation follows. After the incensing, give the thur-

ible back to the IS. Then rise, get the humeral veil, and put it on

the C’s shoulders immediately. If the umbella is to be used, get it

and kneel again in your place, rise when the C faces the people

with the Blessed Sacrament, and go to his right with the umbella

until you reach the edge of the sanctuary. Put it aside and walk

back of the IS to the Repository if a canopy is used.

3S: Return to the sanctuary with the processional cross. Go to

the Communion rail in the center and face the altar. Remain there

until the choir begins the Pange lingua . Then turn right, and walk-

ing very slowly, lead the procession to the Repository.

3. At the Repository

IS: At the Repository step a little to the Epistle side and kneel.

At the Genitori, Genitoque there is another incensation as at Bene-

diction. Return to your place until the C has reposed the Blessed

Sacrament. Rise with the C, make a double genuflection, and lead

the procession back to the altar. Step to the right and allow the

C and 2S to pass. Move back to the center, make a double genu-

flection with the C and 2S, and lead the 3S to the sacristy.

2S: When you have reached the Repository, kneel immediately

on the bottom step. When the C comes down from the altar, take

the humeral veil and put it on a table nearby. Kneel at the right

of the C and assist at the imposition of incense at Genitori, Geni-

toque. Help the C with a stool if he needs it. Get the humeral veil

and return to your place. Rise when the C rises after he has knelt

for a moment of adoration. Make a double genuflection. At his

right, accompany him to the main altar, carrying the humeral veil.

3S: At the Repository step aside to let the Ministers pass and

then go to the center. Remain there until the C and 2S have made

a double genuflection after the reposition. Then turn right and

follow the IS to the main altar. Again step aside to let the Ministers

by, return to the center, and when all have made a double genu-

flection, follow the IS to the sacristy.

4. Transjerring the Ciborium

IS and 3S, carrying lighted candles, return to the sanctuary as

soon as they can, make a double genuflection, and kneel on the

bottom step.

Then:

IS and 3S: When the C comes down with the Blessed Sacrament,

rise and, without a genuflection, precede the C to the Repository

or, if there is no room there, to the place for It. When you have

arrived at the Repository, separate and kneel on the bottom step.

Remain there until the C has come down from the altar and has

knelt for a moment of adoration. Then rise with the C, make a

double genuflection if you are in front of the Repository, and walk

before him to the sacristy.

2S: At the main altar, genuflect with the C and immediately

put the humeral veil on his shoulders. Then get the umbella and

return to your place. Rise when the C turns toward the people

and, carrying the umbella, walk at his right behind the two SS.

When you have arrived at the Repository, put the umbella aside

and kneel on the bottom step at the Epistle side. When the C places

the ciborium on the corporal and kneels on the edge of the platform,

take the humeral veil from him. Kneel until the C has descended

and adored for a moment. Rise with him, genuflect on the floor,

and return to the sacristy at his right.

5. Stripping the Altars

In the sacristy, the 2S assists the C in removing his white cope

and stole and in putting on a violet stole. Then all the Ministers

return to the sanctuary. IS walks at the left of 3S. The C follows

with the 2S at his right.

Then:

IS and 3S: The C will recite the entire antiphon Dividunt sibi

and the first part of the Psalm Deus mens. Then go up to the altar

with him. Assist him while he strips the altar, taking the altar

cloths, tabernacle veil, etc., to the sacristy after he has touched

them. Remove everything from the altar except the Cross and

six candles.

When the main altar has been stripped, go down to the floor with

the C and genuflect when he bows. Then lead him to the side

altar (s), beginning with the Gospel side if there are more than one.

After stripping all the altars, lead the C back to the main altar

and genuflect when he bows to the Cross. Remain standing until

he repeats the antiphon Dividunt sibi. Then genuflect and walk

together ahead of the C into the sacristy.

2S: Take the C’s biretta after he bows to the altar. Then hand

him the book so that he can recite the antiphon Dividunt sibi and

the first part of the Psalm. Take the book from him and ascend

the altar steps at his right. Assist him in removing the altar cloths,

tabernacle veil, etc., and give them to one of the other Servers.

Everything is removed except the Cross and six candles.

When the altar has been stripped, return to the floor with the

C, genuflect as he bows, and hand him his biretta. At his right,

go with him to the other altars. When the last altar has been

stripped, return to the main altar still at his right and wait until

he repeats the antiphon Dividunt sibi
,
handing him a book for

this, if necessary. Then genuflect as he bows, and, preceded by

the IS and 3S, return to the sacristy at the C’s right.

B. LOW MASS

If there is no choir to sing the various parts indicated, follow

the ceremony described above, with these changes

At the Repository all the servers recite the Tantum ergo after

the C has placed the ciborium on the altar.

IS and 3S: After the C has said the antiphon Dividunt sibi and

the first part of the Psalm Deus mens, say the rest of the Psalm

alternately with him during the stripping of the altar (s). Other-

wise follow the rules for serving at Low Mass.

2S: During the procession to the Repository, recite alternately

with the C the Pange lingua and other hymns or Psalms in honor

of the Blessed Sacrament, omitting the Gloria Patri at the end

of the Psalms.

sings the Oration. When the Ministers go to the sedilia, take the

cushions to the credence table.

During the singing of the first Lesson and Responsory, sit at

your places. Stand when the Ministers at the sedilia stand. When

the D sings Flectamus genua

kneel on both knees for a short while

in silent prayer, then rise when the D sings Levate. Remain stand-
ing while the C sings the Oration, and then sit for the singing of

the second Lesson and Responsory.

Stand during the singing of the Passion. After the words Et

inclinato capite tradidit spiritum kneel for a short time in silent

prayer. Rise when the singers rise and remain standing for the

remainder of the Passion.

2. The Solemn Orations

When the Passion singers have left the sanctuary, go to the foot

of the altar with the MC. Genuflect, go to the sacristy, and get

the black dalmatic and tunic for the D and SD. Return to the
sanctuary, genuflect in the middle, and go to the sedilia. Give the

vestments to the Ministers and then

1A: Take the altar cloth from the credence table to the altar.

Spread the cloth in such a way that it does not cover the front

of the altar.

2A: Take the Missal and stand from the credence table to the

altar. After the 1A has spread the cloth over the altar, place the

book in the middle in such a way that it faces straight ahead.

When the cloth has been spread on the altar and the book has

been placed in the middle, return to your places. Stand during the

singing of the Solemn Orations. When the D sings Flectamus genua,
kneel on both knees on the floor for a short time in silent prayer.

Rise when the D sings Levate.

3. The Adoration of the Cross

When the Ministers have changed vestments after the Solemn

Orations, the D will come to the foot of the altar in the middle.
Meet the D there, genuflect, and precede him into the sacristy.
When the D picks up the Cross, lead the procession back into the
sanctuary. At the foot of the altar, let the C, D, SD, and AAC

come between you. After the C has received the Cross from the

D, turn right and walk in single file procession to the Epistle side

of the altar. As the Ministers line up for the unveiling of the Cross,

go to your places and remain standing during the unveiling cere-

mony. Sing with the Ministers and the people the Venite, adoremus

each time it is sung. After each time this is sung, kneel for a short

time in silent prayer. After the second Venite, adoremus, the 2

goes up the steps on the Epistle side. He takes the veil from the

SD and places it on the credence table.

Arise after the third Venite, adoremus and go to the middle at

the foot of the altar. Genuflect and go up the steps to the platform.

Take the Cross from the C, one A on each side of the Cross,

supporting it by the arms in such a manner that the foot of the

Cross rests on the platform. (Tilt the bottom of the Cross out over

the steps, if necessary, that those adoring the Cross may easily kiss

the feet of the Corpus by standing at the foot of the altar on the

floor and merely bowing to the Cross.)

After the two extra AA have adored the Cross, they will come

up the steps and take the Cross from you so that you also may

adore the Cross. Remove your shoes and follow the clergy for the

Adoration of the Cross, beginning at the edge of the sanctuary. Make

a single genuflection there, a single genuflection in the middle of the

sanctuary, and again at the foot of the altar. Bow and kiss the feet

of the Corpus

,

the 1A before the 2A. Then replace your shoes, go up

the steps and again take your position holding the Cross.

After the AAC have adored the Cross, take the Cross to the gate

of the Communion rail, accompanied on each side by the AAC.

Hold the Cross in the same manner as above for the people to adore.

After the Adoration of the Cross by the people, take the Cross

back to the altar and place it on the altar so that it can be seen

by the people. Then go down the steps, genuflect, and go to the

sacristy. The 1A picks up the violet stole and dalmatic, and the

2A picks up the violet tunic. The AA bring the vestments to the

sanctuary, genuflect to the Cross, and go to the sedilia. The 1A

gives the stole and dalmatic to the D, and the 2A gives the tunic

to the SD. They take the black vestments from the D and SD and
return them to the sacristy. They then return to their places in

the sanctuary.

4. The Communion Service

After the D has spread the corporal on the altar, the AA go to
the credence table. The lA picks up the ablution cup and purifi-

cator, and the 2A takes the Missal. They go to the foot of the

altar, genuflect, and go up to the altar. The 1A places the ablution

cup and purificator next to the tabernacle on the Epistle side, and

the 2A places the book on the stand in the middle, a little to the

Gospel side. They then go down the steps to either side of the D

at the foot of the altar. They genuflect with the D and accompany

him to the Altar of Reposition.

At the Altar of Reposition, the AA genuflect and kneel on the

bottom step. When the D takes the ciborium from the Repository,
the 1A takes the humeral veil from the credence table and puts it

on the D’s shoulders.

The AA then take the two processional candles, which have been

placed there beforehand, and lead the D to the altar. When they

arrive at the main altar, the AA go up the steps with the D and

put their candles on the gradine on either side of the tabernacle.

They genuflect with the D, and the lA takes the humeral veil from

the D’s shoulders. The AA then go down the steps, the 2A to the

Gospel side and the lA to the Epistle side. The lA puts the humeral

veil on the credence table, and then both AA kneel on the bottom

step on each side of the altar, facing each other.

The AA recite the Pater noster with the Ministers and the people.

When the C says the Domine, non sum dignus, the 1A sounds the

clapper. After the D and SD have received Communion, the AA
together with the MC receive Communion at the edge of the plat-
form. They then return to their places.

During the singing of the final three Orations, the AA go to the

center of the altar and stand a short distance from the bottom

of the steps. When the Ministers come down from the altar,

Compline is begun. At the end of Compline, all genuflect, and the

AA lead the procession into the sacristy.

Accompany the priest who transfers the Blessed Sacrament to

the temporary tabernacle. Then return to the altar and carry the

objects that he touches to the sacristy. After the altar is stripped,

return to the sacristy.

The Acolytes to the Cross
2

In the sacristy, vest in cassock and surplice. Toward the end of

the second Responsory, lead the Passion singers into the sanctuary.

Do not carry candles. Go to the foot of the altar in the middle,

leaving room between you for the Passion singers. Genuflect and

lead the singers to the sedilia. At the sedilia, come before the C

and leave room between you for the singers. After the C says

Dominus sit in cordibus vestris, etc., lead the Passion singers to

the middle of the sanctuary, genuflect to the altar, and go to the

lecterns on the Gospel side. Remain standing at the lecterns, the

Passion singers between you, until they sing the words Et inclinato

capite tradidit spiritum. Then kneel at your place for a short

while in prayer. Stand when the singers rise and remain standing

for the rest of the Passion. At the end of the Passion, lead the

singers back to the altar, genuflecting in the middle of the sanctuary

as you go to the sacristy.

When the D comes to the sacristy for the Cross, accompany

him to the altar, one on each side of the Cross, carrying your

candles. Go to the foot of the altar with the D and after the D

gives the Cross to the C, go in single file procession to the Epistle

side of the altar on the floor. Take your positions there, one on

the right of the D and one on the left of the SD. Accompany the

Cross as the C carries it to the platform in each stage of its unveil-

ing, kneeling each time after the Venite, adoremus for a short time

in silent prayer.

After the third Venite
,
adoremus, the C will give the Cross to

the AA. They will stand in the middle of the platform, holding

the Cross by its arms. After the C gives the Cross to the AA, place

your candles on the platform on each side of the Cross, then kneel

on the top step, facing the Cross. Remain kneeling while the Min-

isters and clergy adore the Cross.

When the two extra AA come up to take your place after they

have adored the Cross, go down the steps, remove your shoes at the

side, and follow the AA for your Adoration of the Cross. Begin at

the edge of the sanctuary. Make a single genuflection there, again

in the middle of the sanctuary, and a final single genuflection at the

foot of the altar. The AC on the right then bows to the Cross and

kisses the feet of the Corpus.

He is followed by the AC on

follow the clergy to the altar. Begin at the edge of the sanctuary

by making a single genuflection. Make a second and third single

genuflection in the middle of the sanctuary and at the foot of the

altar. The first two extra AA then bow and kiss the feet of the

the one on the right kissing the feet first. These two then

go up the steps and take the Cross from the AA, assuming the

the bottom of the Cross out over the steps if necessary, that those

adoring the Cross may easily kiss the feet of the Corpus by stand-

ing at the foot of the altar on the floor and merely bowing to

the Cross.)

After the second group of extra AA have kissed the feet of the

Corpus
,
they go up the steps and take the place of the AAC, kneel-

ing on the top step facing the Cross.

After the AA and the AAC have adored the Cross, they will

take up their own positions again. The four extra AA then come

down the steps, genuflect to the Cross, and go to the sacristy. In

the sacristy, the extra AA take the two Crosses that are on the

vestment case and carry them outside the Communion rail, in

front of the side altars. There are two AA for each Cross; they

hold the Cross by its arms, suspended in such a manner that the

feet of the Corpus can be easily kissed. After the people have

adored the Cross, the extra AA return to the sacristy.

II. The Ceremony Without Deacon and

Subdeacon

Preparations

1. The Lessons

In the sacristy the SS all vest in cassock and surplice. When

all are ready, the IS leads the procession to the sanctuary, followed

by 2S who is at the right of 3S.

Then:

2S: Take the C’s biretta to the sedilia after you genuflect and

go immediately to the credence table to get the Holy Week Missal.

Place it on the lectern which the IS has set in place to the left

of the C. Kneel at your place. When the C rises, rise with him and

take the cushion to the credence table. Then return to your place.

During the Responsories, if the C sits at the sedilia, go with him

to the sedilia and sit, and after the Responsory return with him

to the center of the altar and genuflect. Go with him to the Gospel

side of the sanctuary when he sings the Passion and stand at his

right, kneeling when he does.

3S: After you genuflect at the altar and the C prostrates, kneel

beside him. Stand and kneel with him and go to the sedilia and

return with him. During the Passion stand at the left of the C

and kneel when he kneels.

IS: When the C prostrates, go to get the lectern and place it to

the left of the C at the foot of the altar. Then return to your place.

During the second Responsory, Eripe me, Domine, move the lectern

to the Gospel side of the sanctuary and again return to your place.

Sit and stand with the people.

2. The Solemn Orations

After the Passion, the 2S and 3S return to the sedilia with the

C, making a reverence to the altar on the way over.

Then

:

2S : Go to the credence table, pick up the altar cloth and Missal

stand, take them to the altar, and give the Missal stand to the 3S

while you spread out the altar cloth. Then return to the C at the

sedilia. Go to the altar with the C when he does and genuflect

when he bows. Remain in your place during the Orations, genu-

flecting with the C when he does.

3S: Go to the lectern, pick up the Missal, and take it to the

altar genuflecting when you pass the center. Carry it up to the

altar and take the Missal stand from the 2S. When he has suffi-

ciently spread out the altar cloth, place the Missal on the Missal

stand on the altar directly in front of the tabernacle and open it

to the Orations. Then return to the C at the sedilia. Go to the

altar when he does and genuflect when he bows. Remain in your

place during the Orations and genuflect when the C does.

IS: After the Passion, go to the sacristy and bring the black

cope to the C at the sedilia without genuflecting in the middle.

Assist the C when he puts on the cope. Then remove the lectern

from the Gospel side of the sanctuary so that it is out of the way.

Return to your place. During the Orations genuflect in your place

when the C does.

3. Solemn Adoration of the Cross

After the Orations, when the IS comes to the right of the 2S,

all the Ministers genuflect with the C and go to the sacristy with

the IS leading. When the C is ready, the IS leads the procession

to the sanctuary with the 2S at the right of 3S walking shoulder to

shoulder behind him. All go to the Epistle side of the sanctuary

and line up on the floor, facing the people. The 2S stands at the C’s

left and the 3S at his right. Meanwhile, the IS goes to the altar to

get the Missal which he holds in front of the C as a book-bearer.

The 2S and 3S assist the C in unveiling the Cross. After the

Venite, adoremus is sung by all, the SS all turn toward the Cross,

kneel on both knees, and bow profoundly. After a while, all rise

and move with the C up to the altar while remaining in the same

positions relative to the C. Finally, the C and all the Ministers

move to the center of the altar and repeat the same ceremony. After

the cloth has been removed, the 2S takes it to the credence table. The

IS returns the Missal to the credence table.

Then the 2S and 3S, who are standing at the middle of the

platform, take the Cross from the C. They stand in that same

position side by side, facing the people, and support the Cross

between them, holding it by the arms in such a way that the foot

of the Cross is resting on the platform.

When the C comes to the floor, the IS meets him, genuflects with

him, and goes at his right to the sedilia. There he helps the C

remove his shoes.

After the C has made the Adoration of the Cross, the SS all

take off their shoes and go to adore the Cross themselves, if there

are enough extra AA to take their place at the Cross. The Ministers

follow any clergy who may be present. After he has adored, IS

goes to his place and sits.

After the clergy and Ministers have adored the Cross, 2S and

3S, accompanied by the AAC, take the Cross to the center outside

the Communion rail and present it for the Adoration by the people

in the same manner as described above.

4. The Communion Service

When all the people have adored the Cross, the 2S and 3S, still

carrying the Cross, take it up to the altar, accompanied all the

while by the AAC. There they place it in the middle high enough

for all the people to see it, but yet out of the way of the C

during the ceremony to follow.

When the Cross is in place, 2S and 3S genuflect on the platform

and go down the steps on the Epistle side of the altar to the

credence table. There the 2S takes the violet burse, ablution cup,

and purificator, while the 3S takes the Missal to the Missal stand

on the altar. Both SS go up the altar by the side steps. The 2S

places the burse in the middle of the altar and the ablution cup

a little to the right, while the 3S places the Missal and stand a

little to the Gospel side of the center and opens it to the Pater

noster. Then both SS go down to the foot of the altar at the center,

genuflect to the Cross, and go to the C at the sedilia.

They return with him to the foot of the altar and genuflect.

When the C has come to the foot of the altar after opening the

corporal, they genuflect with him and, walking at his sides, go

to the Altar of Reposition following the IS. When they arrive there,

they make a double genuflection and kneel.

Then

:

IS: After the Adoration of the Cross by the people, assist the

C in putting on his violet stole and chasuble. When the C goes

to the altar, go to the middle of the sanctuary behind him and

genuflect with the rest of the Ministers. When the C is ready to

begin the procession, genuflect again with him, turn right, and

follow the AAC to the Repository. At the Altar of Reposition make

a double genuflection, rise, and go to get the humeral veil imme-

diately. Place it on the C’s shoulders and go immediately to get

the umbella and stand with it a little to the right of center. Walk

to the right of the C with the umbella during the procession. Upon

arrival at the main altar, put the umbella out of the way and go up

to the platform immediately to get the humeral veil from the C.

Take it to the credence table and return to the sacristy.

2S and 3S: When the C begins the procession back to the main

altar, walk a little in front of him with your hands folded. When

you arrive at the main altar, let the C through and kneel im-

mediately. After a while, the 2S goes to the credence table and

returns with the clapper. At the Domine
,
non sum dignus, he claps

three times. Then he returns it to the credence table, picks up the

paten for Communion, and assists at the distribution of Communion

in the usual manner. The SS receive Communion after any clergy

who may be present. At the beginning of the last Oration, the 2S

goes to the sedilia to get the C’s biretta and returns to his place.

The 2S and 3S stand at the foot of the altar at either side of

the C for Compline. After Compline, the 2S hands the C his

biretta and, after genuflecting, the SS lead the C to the sacristy.

After the Blessed Sacrament is removed, assist the C when he

goes to the sanctuary to strip the altar.

Acolytes to the Cross

1. Adoration of the Cross

Remain in the sacristy until the C comes there to get the Cross.

Then pick up your candles and enter the sanctuary, walking at

each side of the C who carries the Cross. Go immediately to the

Epistle side of the altar on the floor and take a position facing

the people and at the extreme ends of the line of Ministers. After

the Venite, adoremus is sung, both AAC turn toward the Cross,

kneel on both knees, and bow profoundly. After a time, rise and

move up to the altar enough so that the C will be standing at the

Epistle corner of the platform. Repeat the ceremony and move

again to your right far enough so that the C stands in the middle

of the altar. Repeat the

ceremony a third time.

When the C gives the

ing on either side of the Cross during the Adoration by the people.

2. The Communion Service

After the Adoration has been completed, the AAC go up to the

altar in front of the SS who are carrying the Cross and place their

candles down on either side of the Cross. Then come to the middle

of the sanctuary, genuflect, and return to the sacristy.

When the C comes over from the sedilia, the AAC enter the

sanctuary, genuflect, and stand in the middle facing the altar.

After the C comes down from the altar after opening the corporal,

genuflect with him and lead the procession to the Repository.

When you arrive there, step to the side and make a double

genuflection with the C. Then go to pick up the two processional

candles and stand in the middle a few feet from the altar step.

The AAC separate at the altar step when the procession reaches

the main altar. When the C comes up to you, ascend the altar

steps with him and put your candles on the gradine next to the

other candles. Then go down the altar steps and kneel on the

bottom step on either side of the altar. Remain there for the

remainder of the service. When the C comes down from the altar

after the last Oration, go to the center and stand a few feet from

the steps in the middle of the sanctuary, facing the altar. After

Compline, genuflect with the C and lead the procession to the

sacristy.

Particular Instructions

VESTMENTS

If there is no violet cope for the Celebrant and likewise no

violet dalmatic and tunic for the Deacon and Subdeacon respec-

tively, they wear white albs, and for the Celebrant and Deacon

violet stoles.

PASCHAL CANDLE

The candle should be large enough for the letters, numerals, and

cross to be incised. These markings may be made lightly before-

hand so that the Celebrant may more easily draw the lines with

a stylus during the ceremony proper. No other ornaments should

be attached to the candle as a white silk ribbon or flowers. The

candle need not be renewed each year. However, new wax nails

and grains of incense should be supplied each year for the Vigil

service.

BAPTISMAL WATER

The vessel for this water should be something suitable and

properly ornamented. The supply of water should be sufficiently

large for the private use of the parishioners and for the needs

of the parish since this blessing is no longer repeated on the Vigil

of Pentecost.

Acolytes

A. THE BLESSING OF THE NEW FIRE AND THE

PASCHAL CANDLE

1. In the Sacristy

Assist the D and the SD to vest.
1A: Take the aspersory and aspergil in your right hand and

stand at the entrance to the sanctuary between the T and the 2A.

2A: Take the dish and the five wax nails and grains of incense

in your right hand and stand at the right of the 1A at the entrance

to the sanctuary. At a signal from the MC bow to the Cross and
go to the center of the sanctuary, genuflect with the D and the
MC, bow to the choir, turn, and lead the procession to the vestibule.

2. Blessing of the Paschal Candle

Passing to the left of the fire, go to the rear of the vestibule

and turn to face the main altar. Various articles can be set pre-

viously on the table. 1A would present them while 2A holds the

book for prayers to be sung. When the C, D, and MC have taken
their places in front of the lectern or table

:

2A: Follow the T a little to the right of the fire and stand at

his left, facing the lectern or table with Missal stand.

1A: Follow the 2A a little to the right of the fire and stand at

his left, facing the lectern or table with Missal stand. When the

incense has been put into the thurible, give the aspergil to the D
and receive it back from him after the C has sprinkled the grains

of incense and the fire.

2A: Hold out the dish containing the grains of incense for the

blessing and incensation, if the grains have not been previously

blessed. If the incense has been previously blessed, stand behind

the C at the left of the 1A and remain there while the fire is blessed.

1A: After the blessing of the new fire take the paschal candle

in both hands and stand in front of the C with the markings of

the candle facing the C. Remain there while the C inscribes the cross

on the candle and inserts the grains of incense. Continue to hold

the candle until it is lighted.

2A: When the C has cut the cross in the candle go to the right

of the D with the grains of incense. Hold out the grains of incense

to be blessed by the C if they have not previously been blessed.

When the D has taken the last of the grains of incense place the

plate on the table, take the candle from the table and light it

immediately from the new fire. Give the lighted candle to the D.

When the D returns the candle to you extinguish it and stand

near the table.

3. Procession to the Altar

1A: When the D has put on white vestments and the C has put
incense into the thurible for the procession, give the paschal candle

to the D. Take an unlighted candle from the 2A and take your

place in the procession behind the C at the right of the 2A. At

each Lumen Christi genuflect toward the paschal chandle and sing

Deo Gratias.

2A: When the C has put incense into the thurible for the pro-

cession, take the C’s biretta and three small candles from the table.

Give the C’s biretta and one unlighted candle to the MC. When

the 1A has given the paschal candle to the D give one unlighted

candle to the 1A and take your position in the procession behind

the C and at the left of the 1A. At each Lumen Christi genuflect

toward the paschal candle and sing Deo Gratlas.

After the second Lumen Christi:

AA: Go past the C in procession and light your candle from

the paschal candle.

1A: Light the candles of the clergy and other officers in the

procession on the Epistle side; go to credence table with 2A.

2A: Light the candles of the clergy and other officers in the

procession on the Gospel side. After the third Lumen Christi take

your place at the credence table and stand there holding your

lighted candle during the Exsultet.

4. Lessons and Litanies

Toward the end of the Exsultet the AA put out their candles and

place them on the credence table. When the D and the SD have

come to the Epistle side

:

1A: Go to the lectern in the middle and bow to the first Lector.

Stand at the left of the Lector and slightly behind him, genuflect

to the cross when he does, bow to the C and to the choir, and take

his biretta. As the Lector chants the Lesson stand at his left facing

the paschal candle toward the Gospel side of the church.

At the conclusion of the Lesson kneel with the Lector briefly

at the Flectamus genua

,

and rise at the Levate. Return the biretta

to the Lector, genuflect to the cross, and bow to the C and to

the choir. When the first Lector has returned to his place bow

to the Lector for the second Lesson following the same ceremony.

At the conclusion of the remaining three Lessons genuflect and

bow with the Lector as usual and go immediately to your place

at the credence table for the chanting of the Canticles. At the

Levate after each Canticle return to the lectern and bow to the

next Lector.

2A: When the SD comes to the Epistle side take the proces-

sional cross as he hands it to you and place it near the credence

table. Assist the D to change from white vestments to the violet
stole and dalmatic. Toward the conclusion of the first Lesson, take

the Missal from the credence table and holding it at the bottom

of the pages, open it to the proper place. Stand in front of the C

at the sedilia. After Oremus and Flectamus genua turn toward the

cross and kneel. At Levate rise and hold the book while the C sings

During the prayer after the fourth Lesson

:

1A: Kneel at the credence table during the prayer after the

fourth Lesson.

AA: Kneel at the credence table while the Litanies are chanted.

Respond with the other officers.

2A: Hand the processional cross to the SD when he comes to

the credence table before Propitius esto of the Litanies.

B. THE BLESSING OF THE BAPTISMAL WATER

AND BAPTISM

1. If There Is a Baptismal Font

AA: Remain at your place during the blessing of the Baptismal

water.

When the C breathes on the blessed water

:

1A: Go to the middle, genuflect, and take the paschal candle;

go to the right of the MC. Give the candle to the D at the words

purificandis mentibus. After the candle has been immersed in the

water three times receive it from the D, dry the base of the candle,

and return it to its holder. Go to the center, genuflect, and return

to your place at the credence table.

2. The Pouring of the Oils

When the C pours the oils into the water

:

1A: Take the pitcher and basin from the credence table and

go to the center at the right of the 2A. Genuflect at the center and

go before the C for the washing of hands. After the C has washed

his hands return to the credence table with the 2A with the usual

genuflections.

2A: Take the towel and the dish containing bread, lemons, and

cotton from the credence table and go to the center at the left of

the 1A. Genuflect at the center and go before the C for the washing

of hands. When the C has washed his hands return to your place

at the credence table with the 1A with the usual genuflections.

3. If Baptism Is Administered

If Baptism is administered remain in your place at the credence

table.

4. Procession to the Font

At the conclusion of the blessing of the Baptismal water (or

after the administration of Baptism, if it is to be administered)

:

1A: Take the D’s biretta from the sedilia and go to the middle

at the right of the 2A. Stand between the SD and the foot of the

altar facing the altar.

2A: Take the Missal from the lectern and hold it with the pages

to your left. Go at the left of the 1A to the middle and stand

between the SD and the altar facing the altar.

AA: Genuflect at the signal from the MC and go in procession
to the Baptismal font.

When the procession reaches the Baptistry :

1A: Stand aside to the right and take your position at the right

of the MC. When the font has been incensed by the C give the D’s

biretta to the MC and take your place for the procession back to
the sanctuary at the right of the 2A.

2A: Take your position next to the font at the left of and in

front of the C. Hold the Missal for the C as he sings the prayers

at the font. When the D pours the Baptismal water into the font
step aside to your left. When the C has incensed the font take your

place in the procession back to the sanctuary at the left of the 1A.

When the procession reaches the sanctuary AA genuflect and

take end positions at the credence table.

2A: Place the Missal on the credence table and receive the

processional cross from the SD. Stand the cross against the wall

near the credence table or place it in the processional cross holder.

(If the container of Baptismal water is too unwieldy for the D

to carry, AA carry it to the font and pour it into the font. 1A then

gives the D his biretta and the procession begins. 2A gives the

Missal to the MC to carry to the Baptistry. After the pouring
of the water into the font, AA perform the ceremonies as out-

lined above.)

C. RENEWAL OF THE BAPTISMAL PROMISES

When the 2A has received the processional cross from the SD:

1A: Assist the D to remove his violet vestments and put on

credence table and light them from the paschal candle. When they

After the incensation of the paschal candle

:

1A: Give one lighted candle to the D at the sedilia and return

to your place at the credence table holding the other lighted candle

in your right hand for the renewal of the Baptismal promises.

2A: Give your lighted candle to the SD at the sedilia and return

to your place at the credence table holding the other lighted candle

in your right hand for the renewal of the Baptismal promises.

Toward the end of the Our Father

:

AA: Extinguish your candles and 1A and 2A go to the sedilia

to receive the candles of the D and the SD respectively. Extinguish

these candles and put them on the credence table during the sprink-

ling of the people.

When the ceremony of the sprinkling of the people is concluded

AA go to the middle, genuflect, and follow the T to the sacristy.

D. SOLEMN MASS

AA: Assist the D and the SD with their white maniples and

take your place in procession for Mass.

The Mass is the same as an ordinary Solemn Mass with these

exceptions

:

1. The Prayers at the Foot of the Altar are omitted. After the

initial genuflection go at once to the credence table, put your candles

down and remain standing.

2. The 2A rings the bells while the C says the Gloria.

3. No candles are used at the Gospel movement.

4. There is no Pax.

5. While the C sings the Postcommunion take your candles, go

to the center, genuflect, and kneel at the foot of the altar on the

steps (1A on the Epistle side, 2A on the Gospel side) for the

blessing.

6. There is no last Gospel.

Torch Bearers

Follow the SD to the vestibule of the church for the blessing

of the new fire. Genuflect with the other officers as you pass the

main altar. In the vestibule stand at either side while the new

fire is being blessed. Distribute the candles to the clergy and the

people as needed and each take a small candle and a taper from

the table in the vestibule.

Procession to the Altar

Follow the AA in procession to the sanctuary. Genuflect toward

the paschal candle at each Lumen Christi and chant Deo gratlas

with the rest of the officers. In the middle of the church after

the second Lumen Christi, two candles are lighted by the AA.

In the middle of the sanctuary at the conclusion of the third

Lumen Christi light your tapers and candles from the paschal

candle and light the candles of the people. Before the lighting of

the candles of the people, give your candles to the AA. During

the Exsultet stand at your place on either side of the sanctuary.

Renewal of the Baptismal Promises

When the procession has gone to the Baptismal font, after the

blessing of the Baptismal water, light your tapers from the paschal

candle and re-light the candles of the people and the clergy when

they return from the font. (If the church has no Baptismal font,

the candles of the people and the clergy are re-lighted at the

Propitius esto of the Litanies.) Remain standing in your place

for the renewal of the Baptismal promises holding your lighted

candles in your right hand. Extinguish your candles after the

people are sprinkled with the blessed water. Remain at your place

during the Litanies and make the responses as usual. At the con-

clusion of the Litanies prepare the altar for Mass.

3.

Solemn Mass

The Mass is as an ordinary Solemn Mass with the following

exceptions

:

1. Light your candles from the paschal candle at the Preface.

2. There is no Last Gospel; consequently take your place in

procession immediately after the blessing, and at a signal from

the MC, genuflect and proceed to the sacristy.



II. The Ceremony Without Deacon and

Subdeacon

Preparations

The things to be prepared are, for the most part, the same as

when the solemn ceremony takes place (see pp. 33 ff.) . However,

these differences are noted

:

1. No vestments are prepared for Deacon and Subdeacon. How-

ever, the white stole and dalmatic prepared for the Deacon at

the table in the vestibule must be set out for the Celebrant who

wears these vestments
(
stole is worn deacon style) for the procession

into church and the singing of the Exsultet.

2. Preparations for Solemn Mass are not necessary: white hum-

eral veil, candles for the deacon and subdeacon.

3. On the table in the vestibule of the church, place the dish

with the five wax nails and grains of incense, the empty thurible

and boat with incense, the holy water.

4. Acolytes’ candles and torches may or may not be used.

Servers

First Server

A. HIGH MASS

1. Blessing of the New Fire and the Paschal Candle

a. In the Sacristy

Stand at the entrance to the sanctuary in front of the 3S,

who is carrying the processional cross. When the C has finished

vesting, bow to the Cross with him, and lead the procession into

the sanctuary. Go to the center some distance back from the steps

and face the altar.

Genuflect when the C bows to the Cross. Then turn right and,

walking slowly, lead the procession to the vestibule.

b. In the Vestibule

Go to the left of the fire and stand near it facing the opposite

wall. The 4S stands at your left. At the conclusion of the first

Oration, when the C sprinkles the blessed fire with holy water,

take a piece of charcoal from the fire with the tongs and place

it into the thurible. After the C has blessed the incense, close the

thurible and hand it to the C with your right hand, receiving the

boat back from him with your left hand. When the C has finished

incensing the grains and fire, receive the thurible from him and

return to your place.

Remain in your place while the paschal candle is blessed. If the

grains of incense have not previously been blessed, go again to

the right of the C after he has cut the cross in the candle. The

grains of incense are incensed before being placed in the candle.

c. The Return to the Sanctuary

After the C has changed vestments, step to his right again, hand

him the boat, and open the thurible. The thurible is filled and

blessed as usual. There is no incensation.

As soon as you have closed the thurible and taken the boat,

go to the entrance of the vestibule in front of the 3S and a little

to the left of the center. When everyone is ready, lead the proces-

sion into the body of the church. Go far enough into the church

to allow the C and 2S to leave the vestibule. Then stop and turn

to face the paschal candle which the C is carrying in procession.

Genuflect when the C sings Lumen Christi. Sing Deo Gratias with

the choir and then rise and continue the procession.

Stop in the middle of the church and again near the foot of

the altar. The same ceremony is repeated in each place.

After the third Lumen Christi

,

go to the foot of the altar a

little to the Gospel side, leaving room for the 3S between you

and the center.

Remain standing when the C kneels after receiving the Missal

from the 2S. When the C rises, genuflect with him, turn toward

him, and, walking ahead of the 3S, go a little to the right of the

lectern for the Exsultet leaving room for the C and 2S.

d. Exsultet

Stand a little to the right of the lectern with the 2S at your

left, and face the side wall directly. When the C has placed the

Missal on the lectern, pass the thurible to the 2S on the right of

the C, who hands the C the thurible. Bow before and after the

incensation. Receive the thurible from the 2S and return to the

sacristy. Leave the thurible in the sacristy and return to your place

at the credence table. Take a small candle from the credence table

and light it from the candle of the 4S and stand during the chanting

of the Exsultet holding the lighted candle in your right hand.

2. Lessons and Litany

Sit during the Lessons at your place near the credence table.

Stand for the Versicles and the prayers that follow the Lessons.

During the chanting of the Litany, kneel at your place near the

credence table and make the responses with the others.

3. Blessing of Baptismal Water and Baptism

a. If There Is a Baptismal Font

Remain in your place at the credence table during the blessing

of the Baptismal water. When the paschal candle is removed from

the water and returned to its stand, go to the center, genuflect,

and go to the right of the 2S who is standing at the right of the

C. Take the empty holy water container from the table near the

paschal candle and at the conclusion of the Preface put some of

the blessed water into the empty container for the sprinkling of

the people, and some into another container that is used later for

the blessing of homes. Place the containers of holy water on the

table near the paschal candle, go to the center, genuflect, and go

to the sacristy for the thurible and boat.

h. Procession to the Font

When the C washes his hands after the pouring of the oils into

the Baptismal water, go to the center of the sanctuary carrying

the thurible in your left hand and the boat in your right. Genuflect

at the center and go before the C for the administration of incense.

Give the boat to the 2S and hold the thurible for the C who puts

incense into it with the usual blessing. There is no incensation. Re-

ceive the boat back from the 2S and, carrying the boat in your left

hand and the thurible in your right, take your place in the

sanctuary facing the altar behind the 3S who is holding the pro-

cessional cross. Genuflect at the signal, turn right, and lead the

procession to the Baptismal font.

When the procession arrives at the baptistry, stand at the right

of the 2S while the Baptismal water is poured into the font. At

the conclusion of the prayer that follows the pouring of the water

into the font, give the thurible to the 2S for the incensation of

the font. Receive the thurible back from the 2S at the end of the

incensation and lead the procession back to the sanctuary. When

the procession reaches the foot of the altar, step a little to the

right to leave room between you and the C for the 2S. Genuflect

with the others and take your place at the credence table while the

C goes to the sedilia to change to white vestments.

4. Renewal of Baptismal Promises

Join the C, 2S, and 4S at the foot of the altar after the C has

changed to white vestments. Carry the thurible in your right hand

and the boat in your left. Genuflect with the rest and go in front

of the paschal candle, between the candle and the people, facing

the altar at the right of the 2S. Hand the boat to the 2S and hold

the thurible open for the C while he puts in incense. Receive the

boat back from the 2S and step back to allow the C, 2S, and 4S

to pass between you and the candle as they circle it during the

incensation. Receive the thurible from the 2S at the end of the

incensation and go at once to the sacristy with the thurible and

boat. Leave the thurible and boat in the sacristy in their place

and return to your place at the credence table.

At the end of the renewal of the Baptismal promises, during

the recitation of the Our Father, go to the table near the paschal

candle, genuflecting at the center as you pass, and take the con-

tainer of blessed water for the sprinkling of the people. Take your

place at the right of the 2S in front of the candle facing the people.

Give the aspergil to the 2S and carry the container of blessed

water in your right hand. Accompany the C, 2S, and 4S for the

sprinkling of the people, walking a little to the right and a little

behind the 2S. Hold the container of blessed water for the C to

replenish the supply in the aspergil whenever necessary. Upon your

return to the foot of the altar, stand at the right of the 2S, genu-

flect with the rest, and lead the procession to the sacristy. Assist

the 3S to prepare the altar for Mass.

a . If There Is No Baptismal Font

If the church has no Baptismal font, the Baptismal water is

not blessed. After the first part of the Litany, follow the instruc-

tions for the renewal of Baptismal promises. Ordinary holy water

is used for the sprinkling of the people after the renewal of the

Baptismal promises. Take the container of ordinary holy water

from the credence table to the C for the sprinkling of the people at

the end of the Our Father following the renewal of Baptismal

promises.

5 . Mass and Lauds

As the chanters sing Christe
,
audi nos, bow to the Cross in the

sacristy, and, at the right of the 3S, precede the 2S and 4S to

the sanctuary. Genuflect at the foot of the altar with the C and

then go with the 3S to your place near the credence table. Remain

there during all of Mass and Lauds. At the end of the ceremony,

genuflect with the C and go to the sacristy at the right of the 3S.

B. LOW MASS

If there are no chanters or choir, the entire ceremony will be

conducted as a Low Mass. In this case, at the beginning of the

second part of the Litany, at the end of the renewal of Baptismal

promises, go with the IS to prepare the altar for Mass. Then go to

the sacristy, get the C’s white vestments, and bring them to the

sedilia. The C does not go to the sacristy to vest for Mass, but

vests at the sedilia.

Second Server

A. HIGH MASS

1 . Blessing of the New Fire and Paschal Candle

a. In the Sacristy

Assist the C to vest. Then take the aspersory and aspergil in

your right hand and stand behind and a little to the right of the

C. When the C bows to the Cross, bow with him and, walking at

his left, accompany him to the foot of the altar.

Genuflect at the foot of the altar when the C bows to the Cross.

Turn toward the C and walking at his right, follow the 3S to the

vestibule.

b. In the Vestibule

Pass around the fire and go to the right of the C as he faces

the altar. Take the C’s biretta and place it on the table; then

return to his right.

During the Orations, hold the edge of the C’s cope with your

left hand whenever he makes the sign of the cross over the fire

or over the grains of incense. Make all the necessary responses.

After the first prayer, Deus qui per Filium tuum
,
hand the

aspergil to the C. Hold the cope while he sprinkles the grains of

incense and fire. Then take the aspergil from the C, step back and

hold the edge of his cope while he fills the thurible. After the C

has received the thurible from the IS, hold his cope while he

incenses the grains of incense and the fire. Put the aspergil and

aspersory on the table.

When the C returns the thurible to the IS, take the stylus from

the table and hand it to the C. At the same time, take the dish

containing the grains of incense and hold it in your right hand

while the C is cutting the cross in the paschal candle. When the

candle is incised, receive the stylus from the C and hand him the

dish with the grains of incense. Return the stylus to the table and

take a taper from the table. Light the taper from the new fire and

hand it to the C who lights the paschal candle. Receive the taper

back from the C, extinguish it, and return it to the table.

Accompany the C to the table near the rear of the vestibule

after the final prayer, Veniat, quaesumus, and assist him while he

changes vestments. When he returns to the lectern, take your place

again at his left.

c. Return to the Sanctuary

The thurible is filled again immediately. Step back and hold the

cope as before. After the IS has closed the thurible, get a small

unlighted candle and the holy water stoup from the table and walk

behind the C and at the right of the 4S in procession, carrying the

candle in your right hand and the holy water container in your left.

Just inside the doors of the church, stop when the C does. Genu-

flect toward the paschal candle when the C sings Lumen Christi.

Sing Deo gratias with the choir, rise, and light your candle from

the paschal candle. Continue in procession to the middle of the

church. When the procession stops in the middle of the church, the

ceremony at the Lumen Christi is repeated. When you have risen,

light the candles of the other Servers. After the third Lumen Christi,

in the middle of the sanctuary, light the small candles of the people.

d. Exsultet

After the choir has sung Deo gratias in response to the third

Lumen Christi, cross behind the C as he goes to the foot of the

altar. Bring the holy water container to the credence table and

take the Missal from the 4S, giving him your lighted candle at the

credence table. Accompany the C at his right to the foot of the

altar. Genuflect with the C and kneel as he does on the lowest step

of the altar for the prayer before the Exsultet. Rise when the C

rises, genuflect, and accompany him at his right to the lectern

where the C puts the Missal on the lectern and opens it to the

Exsultet. At the lectern, stand at the right of the C, facing the

Gospel side.

The IS on your right passes the thurible for you to present

it to the C. Bow before and after the incensation with the C

and IS. After you have given the thurible back to the IS, stand

at the right of the C with hands joined for the chanting of the

Exsultet, turning the pages when necessary.

e. End of the Exsultet

When the C has closed the Missal, turn toward him and go at

his right to the foot of the altar. Genuflect with the C and accom-

pany him to the sedilia. Standing at his left, take the white

dalmatic, stole, and maniple and carry them to the sacristy. Return

to the sanctuary and bring the violet vestments from the credence

table to the sedilia. Assist the C in putting on the violet maniple,

stole, and cope.

2. Lessons and Litany

When the C has vested in the violet vestments, accompany him

at his right to the lectern. Stand at the right of the C at the

lectern during the Lessons. Kneel when the C sings Fleetamus genua

and stand at Levate. Turn toward the altar when the C does at

Oremus and Jesum Christum of the four prayers. If the C goes

to the sedilia for the Canticles following the last three Lessons,

turn toward him as he turns toward the sedilia, accompany him

to the sedilia, hand him his biretta when he is seated, and take

your place near the credence table, standing. At the conclusion of

each of the Canticles, return to the sedilia, take the biretta from

the C, place it on the sedilia, and accompany him again to the

lectern.

(Should there be Lectors for the four Lessons, the C remains

at the sedilia after he has put on the violet vestments. When the

C is seated, go to the lectern and summon the Lectors with a bow

and assist them as the 1A in the solemn ceremony, page 37.)

At the conclusion of the prayer after the fourth Lesson, accom-

pany the C to the sedilia. Go to your place near the credence table

and kneel when the C kneels for the chanting of the Litany. Make

the responses to the invocations with other Servers. (In the absence

of chanters for the Litany, take the Missal from the lectern and

accompany the C to the center of the altar. Genuflect when he

bows and kneel at his right on the lowest step, holding the Missal

for him with the 4S while he chants the Litany. At the conclusion

of the first part of the Litany, before Propitius esto, take the Missal

to the lectern.) Make the responses to the Litany with the other

Servers as the choir chants the invocations.

3. Blessing of the Baptismal Water and Baptism

a. If There Is a Baptismal Font

Before Propitius esto of the Litany, accompany the C at his right

to the center of the sanctuary in front of the vessel of water to

be blessed. Take your place at the right of the C, facing the

people. Hold the edge of the C’s cope each time he performs an

action. When he divides the water with his hand during the Preface,

take the towel from the table and hand it to him. Hand him the

towel each time he touches the water.

As the C begins to sing Tu has simplices aquas

,

after he has

breathed on the water, take the paschal candle from its stand.

Give the candle to the C when he has finished the words purificandis

mentibus efficaces. Help the C hold the candle while he lowers it

a little into the water and sings Descendat, etc. The C repeats this

ceremony three times, lowering the candle a little deeper the second

time and resting it on the bottom the third time. When the C

takes the candle out of the water after singing Totamque hujus

. . . effectu, etc., receive the candle from the C, dry it, and

return it to its holder.

While the C reads the Per Dominum nostrum Jesum Christum,

etc., which concludes the Preface, assist the IS as he puts some of

the newly blessed water into the aspersory.

b. If Baptism Is Administered

Hand the C the Baptismal Ritual. Assist at the right of the C

for the administration of Baptism, holding the edge of the cope

whenever the C performs any action. Assist the C in removing

his violet stole and cope and putting on the white stole and cope.

When the Baptismal ceremony is over, hand the towel to the C.

Then assist him as he changes again to the violet vestments.

c. Procession to the Font

After you have received the towel back from the C at the con-

clusion of the blessing of the Baptismal water (or after C has

changed into violet vestments after Baptism, if it is to be admin-

istered), go to the sedilia and get the C’s biretta. Return to his

right at the foot of the altar. Take the boat from the IS and

assist in the administration of incense. There is no incensation.

Return the boat to the IS when the C has finished putting incense

into the thurible with the usual blessing. Hand the C his biretta,

take the Missal from the lectern, and stand at the right of the C

at the foot of the altar. Genuflect when the C bows, turn toward

him, and cross behind him to his right. Walking at his right, follow

the 3S to the Baptismal font.

When the procession arrives at the Baptistry, take the C’s

biretta. Give the Missal to the 4S after he has poured the Bap-

tismal water into the font. Receive the thurible from the IS and

present it to the C for the incensation of the font at the conclusion

of the prayer Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, respice. During the

incensation, hold the C’s cope with your left hand. Receive the

thurible from the C after the incensation and return it to the IS.

Give the C his biretta and accompany him back to the sanctuary

at his right, holding his cope.

Accompany the C to the foot of the altar, genuflect as he bows,

and go with him to the sedilia. At the sedilia assist the C as he

changes from the violet vestments to the white stole and cope.

4. Renewal of Baptismal Promises

When the C has changed into the white stole and cope, accom-

pany him at his right to the paschal candle. Stand at the right of

the C as he stands in front of the paschal candle, facing the altar.

Take the boat from the IS and assist as the C puts incense into

the thurible. Return the boat to the IS after the blessing and,

holding the C’s cope with your left hand, accompany him as he

circles the candle while incensing it. Receive the thurible from the

C and return it to the IS. Genuflect with the 4S and go with him

to the credence table. Stand at the credence table until the 4S

gives you a candle lighted from the paschal candle. Then sit, hold-

ing the lighted candle in your right hand, during the Instruction

and stand during the renewal of the Baptismal promises.

After the recitation of the Our Father during the Baptismal

promises, extinguish your candle and put it on the credence table.

Go with the 4S to the center of the sanctuary and take your place

at the right of the C. Receive the aspergil from the IS and present

it to the C with the usual kisses. Make the sign of the cross when

the C sprinkles you, rise when the C rises, genuflect as he bows,

turn with him and, crossing behind him to his right, accompany

him for the sprinkling of the people as at the Asperges. Cross be-

hind the C again as he turns to return to the altar and accompany

him at his right to the foot of the altar. Return the aspergil to

the IS. Get the C’s biretta from the sedilia and give it to him.

Genuflect at a signal from the C and accompany him to the sacristy.

(If there are no chanters, the C chants the second part of the

Litany. In this case, go to the credence table after returning the

sprinkler to the IS, get the missal, and return with it to the foot

of the altar. Hold the Missal open to the Litany with the 4S while

the C makes the invocations. At the conclusion of the Litany,

accompany the C to the sacristy as above.)

In the sacristy assist the C to vest for Mass.

5. Mass

As the chanters sing Christe, audi nos of the Litany, bow to

the Cross in the sacristy and, at the right of the 4S, follow the

IS and 3S to the sanctuary. At the foot of the altar take the C’s

biretta and genuflect with him, setting the biretta on the step.

Kneel immediately as the C ascends the altar.

The Mass proceeds as any festive High Mass, with these

exceptions :

1. There are no Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, and there is

no Introit. The C ascends the altar immediately after the first

genuflection. Answer the Kyrie immediately after the C has said

the Aufer a nobis and the Oramus te, Domine.

2. Ring the bells during the entire time that the C recites the

Gloria.

3. Do not transfer the Missal until the C has sung the third

Alleluia after the Epistle.

6. Lauds

Lauds begin immediately after the ablutions, taking the place

ordinarily given to the Communio. When the choir has repeated

the antiphon after the Benedictus, the C goes to the center to

sing Dominus vobiscum and then returns to the Missal for the

Oration Spiritum nobis, Domine. The Mass concludes as usual

except that the C adds Alleluia, alleluia after the Ite, missa est and

descends to the foot of the altar after the final blessing since the

Last Gospel is omitted.

B. LOW MASS

If there are no chanters or choir, the entire ceremony will be

conducted without singing. In this case note the following changes

in the description given above

:

1. The C recites in a loud tone of voice everything that he has

been told to sing. Together with the 4S, make all the responses

which the chanters or choir would otherwise sing.

2. Help the 4S hold the Missal in front of the C and recite

the Tract Sicut cervus with the C and 4S as you go to the font.

Help the 4S hold the Missal for the Litany at the foot of the altar

and make the responses as the C makes the invocations.

3. At the end of the second part of the Litany, after the renewal

of Baptismal promises, accompany the C to the sedilia and help

him vest for Mass. He does not go to the sacristy.

Third Server

A. HIGH MASS

1. Blessing of the New Fire and Paschal Candle

a. In the Sacristy

Take the processional cross and stand at the entrance to the

sanctuary behind the IS. When the C has vested and the ministers

have bowed to the Cross, follow the IS to the center of the

sanctuary. Never bow or genuflect while carrying the Cross. In

the center of the sanctuary stand in front of the IS as he faces

the altar.

When the C has bowed to the Cross, turn right and follow the

IS to the vestibule.

b. In the Vestibule

At the entrance to the vestibule, step aside and let the C and

SS pass. Then stand in the doorway, facing the C during the bless-

ing of the new fire and grains of incense.

c. Return to the Sanctuary

When the C has filled the thurible after having changed to white

vestments, step aside and allow the 4S and IS to pass in front

of you. Then follow the 4S and IS in the procession back to the

sanctuary.

Stop when the 4S and IS stop just inside the doors of the

church. Turn to face the paschal candle without genuflecting at

the Lumen Christi, answer Deo gratias with the SS, turn back

toward the altar, and continue the procession. This procedure is

followed for each Lumen Christi. The second Lumen Christi is

sung in the middle of the church and the third in the center of

the sanctuary. After the Deo gratias following the third Lumen

Christi
,
go to the foot of the altar a little to the Gospel side and

stand at the right of the IS.

d. Exsultet

Remain standing when the C kneels after receiving the Missal

from the 2S. When the C rises, do not genuflect with him. After

the C has genuflected, turn toward him and, following the IS, pass

to the Gospel side of the sanctuary and stand on the side of the

paschal candle opposite the C. Stand facing the Epistle side during

the Exsultet.

e. End of the Exsultet

When the C has closed the Missal, turn toward him and go at

his left to the foot of the altar. Do not genuflect with the C, but,

after he has genuflected, go to the credence table and put the

processional cross in its place. Take your position near the credence

table and remain there during the Lessons and Litany, sitting and

standing with the rest.

2. Lessons and Litany

a. If There Is a Baptismal Font

During the singing of the Litany, take the vessel of water to

be blessed to the center of the sanctuary and place it a short dis-

tance from the paschal candle toward the people. Then return and

take the table prepared for the blessing of the Baptismal water

and place it a slight distance from and to the Gospel side of the

vessel of water to be blessed. Move the lectern near the vessel of

water to be blessed, slightly closer to the altar and at an angle

so that if you stood at the lectern, you would face the back Epistle

corner of the church. Open the Missal on the lectern to the blessing

of the Baptismal water. Go to the sacristy and get the white stole

and cope and bring them to the credence table, leaving them on one

of the benches.

3. Blessing of the Baptismal Water

a. If There Is a Baptismal Font

At the Propitius esto of the Litany, take the processional cross

and join the C and SS at the sedilia (or at the foot of the altar

if there are no chanters). Accompany the C and SS to the container

of water to be blessed and stand at the left of the C during the

entire ceremony, facing the Gospel side of the sanctuary. Remain

in this position for Baptism, if it is to be administered.

b. Procession to the Font

After the blessing of the Baptismal water (or after the admin-

istration of Baptism, if it is to be administered), go to the center

of the sanctuary several feet from the altar steps. After the C has

bowed to the Cross, turn right and follow the IS to the Baptistry.

Follow the IS into the Baptistry and go around the font and face

the C who stands in front of the font. Stand there for the ceremony

which follows. After the incensation of the font take your place

in procession behind the IS.

c. Return to the Sanctuary

Follow the IS back to the sanctuary. In the sanctuary step a

little to the right in front of the IS. When the others have passed,

move back to the center. Do not genuflect or bow, but after the

C has bowed to the Cross, take the processional cross to the sacristy.

Return to your place at the credence table.

d. If There Is No Baptismal Font

vessel of water to be prepared for blessing, nor is the table neces-

sary. Near the end of the Litany get the white cope and stole

from the sacristy and bring them to the credence table as above and

follow the instructions for the renewal of Baptismal promises.

4. Renewal of Baptismal Promises

Remain at your place near the credence table. Sit for the In-

struction and stand for the renewal of Batismal promises, holding

a lighted candle in your right hand. Kneel during the Litany until

the chanters sing Peccatores
,

te rogamus
,
audi nos. Then rise,

extinguish the candle, go to the center and genuflect as the C

bows to the Cross. Walking at the left of the IS, precede the 2S

and 4S to the sacristy. While the C is vesting, prepare the altar

for Mass.

5. Mass and Lauds

As the chanters sing Christe, audi nos, bow to the Cross in the

sacristy and at the left of the IS, precede the 2S and 4S to the

sanctuary. Genuflect at the foot of the altar with the C and then

go with the IS to your place near the credence table. Remain there

during all of Mass and Lauds. At the end of the ceremony genuflect

with the C and go to the sacristy at the left of the IS.

B. LOW MASS

If there are no chanters or choir, the entire ceremony will be

conducted without singing. In this case, note the following changes

in the description given above

:

1 . Rise after the invocation Peccatores in the Litany and go with

the 3S to prepare the altar for Mass.

2. The C vests at the sedilia and does not go to the sacristy

before Mass.

When the C bows to the Cross, bow with him and, walking at his

right, accompany him to the foot of the altar. Genuflect at the foot

of the altar when the C bows. Turn toward the C and, walking at his

left, follow the 3S to the vestibule.

b. In the Vestibule

Passing around the fire, go to the left of the IS. Stand there

during the first Oration Dens
,
qui per Filium tuum. After this

prayer, assist the IS to put a piece of charcoal from the new fire

into the thurible. Go at once to the table and take the paschal

candle. Carry it in front of the C with the markings turned toward

the C. Hold it thus with both hands while it is blessed and lighted.

c. Return to the Sanctuary

When the C returns to the lectern after he has put on white

vestments and after incense has been put into the thurible, give

the paschal candle to the C. Take the Missal from the lectern and

go to the table where the C’s violet vestments are placed. Take the

violet stole and cope and the C’s biretta and carry them along with

the Missal in the procession. Your place in procession is behind

the C and at the left of the 2S. When the procession stops and the

C sings Lumen Christi, genuflect with the others and sing Deo

gratias. This ceremony is repeated for the Lumen Christi again in

the center of the church and again in the center of the sanctuary.

After the third Lumen Christi, take the violet vestments and the

Missal to the credence table, and the biretta to the sedilia. Return

to the credence table, and receive a lighted candle from the 2S.

d. Exsultet

Stand at your place near the credence table, holding a lighted

candle during the Exsultet. At the conclusion of the Exsultet, when

the C and 2S go to the sedilia, go to the lectern and remove the

white veil from the lectern. Bring the veil to the credence table

and remain there for the Lessons.

2. Lessons

Remain at your place near the credence table during the Lessons

and prayers which follow. Sit during each Lesson, stand during the

prayers, and kneel with the others at each Flectamus genua. Rise

at Levate.

(Should there be Lectors for the Lessons, take the second Missal

from the credence table to the C at the sedilia and perform the

ceremonies described under 2A in the solemn ceremony, page 37.)

3. Litany

Kneel at your place near the credence table for the Litany,

making the responses with the others. (In the absence of chanters

for the Litany, join the C and 2S at the foot of the altar, at the

left of the C. Genuflect when the C bows and kneel at his left on

the lowest step, holding the Missal for him with the 2S while he

chants the Litany.)

Blessing of the Baptismal Water

a. If There Is a Baptismal Font

After Propitius esto of the Litany, go to the lectern with the C

and 2S for the blessing of the Baptismal water. Stand at the left

of the C and turn the pages of the Missal when necessary. When

the C pours the oils into the water, go to the credence table and get

the ewer and basin. Return to the right of the C and assist in the

washing of the hands as at the Lavabo. Return the ewer and

basin to the credence table and return to the left of the C for

Baptism, if it is to be administered.

b. Procession to the Font

After the C has washed his hands, or after Baptism, if it is to

be administered, take the container of blessed water in both hands,

face the altar, and wait for the other Officers to genuflect. When

they have genuflected, carry the container of water in procession

behind the 3S immediately in front of the C.

In the Baptistry, pour the blessed water into the font at once

and put the container on the table. Receive the Missal from the 2S

and hold it for the C while he chants the prayer Omnipotens sempi-

terne Deus, respice, standing in front of the C and a little to his

left. After the prayer, place the Missal on the table and, standing

at the left of the C, hold his cope while the C incenses the font.

Return to the table, take the Missal in your left hand and, standing

at the left of the C, hold his cope with your right hand for the

procession back to the sanctuary.

5. Renewal of Baptismal Promises

Accompany the C to the foot of the altar, genuflect when he

bows, and go to the credence table. Leave the Missal at the cre-

dence table and take the form of the Instruction and the Renewal

of Baptismal Promises to the lectern. Turn the lectern so that it

faces the people directly and go to the sedilia. When the C has

vested in the white stole and cope, accompany him to the paschal

candle at his left. Stand at the left of the C as he stands in front

of the paschal candle, facing the altar. Hold the C’s cope while

he puts incense into the thurible and accompany him at his left

as he circles the candle, incensing it, holding the cope with your

right hand. After the incensation, genuflect with the 2S and go with

him to the credence table.

Take a small unlighted candle in your right hand from the

credence table and go to the center to light it from the paschal

candle. Return to the credence table and take another unlighted

candle from the table and light it from the candle you are carrying.

Give the second lighted candle to the 2S. Then sit, holding the

lighted candle in your right hand during the Instruction, and stand

during the renewal of the Baptismal promises.

After the recitation of the Our Father during the Baptismal

promises, extinguish your candle and put it on the credence table.

Go with the 2S to the center of the sanctuary and take your place

at the left of the C. Make the sign of the cross when the C sprinkles

you with holy water, rise when the C rises, genuflect as he bows,

turn with him and, crossing behind him to his left, accompany him

for the sprinkling of the people as at the Asperges. Cross behind

the C again as he turns to return to the altar and accompany him

at his left to the foot of the altar. Genuflect at a signal from the C

The Mass proceeds as any festive High Mass, with the following

exceptions

:

1. There are no Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, and there is

no Introit. The C ascends the altar immediately after the first

genuflection. Answer the Kyrie immediately after the C has said

the Aufer a nobis and the Oramus te, Domine.

7. Lauds

Lauds begins immediately after the Ablutions, taking the place

ordinarily given to the Communio. When the choir has repeated the

antiphon after the Benedictus
,
the C goes to the center to sing

Dominus vobiscum and then returns to the Missal for the Oration

Spiritum nobis
,
Domine. The Mass concludes as usual except that

the C adds Alleluia
,
alleluia, after the Ite, missa est and goes down

to the foot of the altar after the final Blessing since the Last

Gospel is omitted.

B. LOW MASS

If there are no chanters or choir, the entire ceremony will be

conducted without singing. In this case, note the following changes

in the description given above:

1. The C recites in a loud tone of voice everything that he has

been told to sing. Together with the 2S, make all the responses

which the chanters or choir would otherwise sing.

2. Help the 2S hold the Missal in front of the C and recite the

Tract Skut cervus with the C and 2S as you go to the font. Help

the 2S hold the Missal for the Litany at the foot of the altar and

make the responses as the C makes the invocations.

3. At the end of the second part of the Litany after the renewal

of Baptismal promises, accompany the C to the sedilia and help

him vest for Mass. He does not go to the sacristy.
