The Use of Competition and Awards for Progress in Home Building and Home Activity 64 Heading to Save the Home by JOHN C. RAWE, S. J. T HE home, especially when it is on a piece of land, can be a great laboratory which offers daily opportunities for marvel- ous experimentation and the restoration of some sound domestic economy. In order to get an introduction to the wonders of this laboratory, people must have good practical literature dealing with productivity in homes and with good soil practice. Most Rev. Vincent J. Ryan, D. D. Bishop of Bismarck, North Dakota A KEY to PRACTICAL PAMPHLET LITERATURE for Homemaking, Home Building, and Productivity in Homes A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF FIVE- AND TEN-CENT PAMPHLETS Quantity prices may be secured for dis- cussion groups. Write directly to pub- lishers for quotations on quantity orders. What Everyone Should Know About the Home How to Build It How to Keep It Productive How to Make It the Center of Family Ownership How to Make It the Center of Family Planning How to Make It the Center of Family Life How to Make It the Center of Individual and Family Sanctification The bibliographies are grouped in sections for the purpose of helping discussion groups and families in selecting certain points related to the home and the land and the community, special points which they may wish to discuss and take action upon. When homes are the spiritual, economic, and social centers for family activity, and when local communities contain natural groupings for families in planning and cooperation in essential economic functions, we have the foundations for a sound, democratic, and organic society and right social order. THE USE OF COMPETITION AND AWARDS FOR PROGRESS IN HOME BUILDING AND HOME ACTIVITY In Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri through the "Plant to Live and Prosper” competition and to some extent in Nebraska through the "Pasture-Forage-Livestock” competi- tion, people on farms and people in smaller communities, young and old alike, have created interest and achieved striking results in better homes, better domestic economy, better community cooperation, better land utilization. This competition is cen- tered around an annual program. Each family participating keeps its own record, to be based on the following points: 40% for "living at home”; 20% for soil conservation; — 64— 20% for diversification; 20% for home improvement; 100%— perfect score. Tenant families are not in a position to compete with owner families on these points. Hence separate contests are con- ducted. one for tenant families, another for owner families. County judges select the county winners. State judges sele- the state winners. For further information write to Waite - Durham, Memphis Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tennessee or to the Memphis Chamber of Commerce Agricultural Committee. Similar contests, conducted on a smaller scale, can be held in any community and directed by local leaders. We suggest that farm families divided into proper competing groups such as tenants or owners according to first, second, or third year of competition, etc., work out a score card and record book for each participating group. Special record books may be printed or simple composition books may be used for the purpose r keeping the annual record of achievement according to the fol- lowing points; HOMEMAKERS in families on the homesteads ( in the country on the farm ) USING RESOURCES (spiritual and material) MORE EFFECTIVELY IN FAMILY LIVING Family Activity (spiritual, social, economic) Better Housing Better Food Plans Better Ways of Farming Better Ways of Spending 20% 1. Contour plowing and contour planting of crops, water conservation, construction of drop-in-let dams, tree planting, care of trees, etc. Total: 100% Score Card for Contest. In developing family and group action on the points indicated above, order some of the pamphlets indicated in the bibli- ographies. Further a special contest may be worked out among the home- makers in the small towns and in the suburbs of the large cities. Many of these homemakers have some gardening in their home — 66— program already. Many others are in a position to acquire some land and take up a gardening program. A score card and family record book can easily be worked out for them too. Homemaking contests can be conducted with far-reaching suc- cess^eVen in city homes—when domestic production is studied. For such groups of homemakers in the smaller communities and in the suburbs of the larger cities we suggest the following points for a competition basis: HOMEMAKERS In small communities and in the suburbs of the larger cities.
