Number 1 THE ANNUNCIATION The messenger of the Heavenly Court, reveal- ing the mysteries of the Divinity, salutes as full of Grace the Virgin Mother of God, and She con- ceived God Incarnate by the fathering of the Holy Spirit. Oeaddiftod 4 FOREWORD EolSarp l5obena£i R osary Novenas for the use of the faith- ^ful conform with the wish of the Holy See, and are recommended for private use and for public devotions in the Church. The prayers here arranged are gathered from approved sources. Through the use of the Holy Rosary may they revive great confidence and courage in the hearts of the faithful. Renewed fervor in the daily recita- tion of the Rosary beads will fulfill the hopes of His Holiness Pius XI expressed in his Encyclical Letter of September 29, 1937 which reads: '*When we receive in audience newly-mar- ried couples and speak to them as a father^ We not only give them a Rosary^ earnestly recommending them to use ity but We ask them to follow Our own example and not to allow even one day to go by without saying the Rosary^ no matter how bur- dened they may be with many cares and labors” 5 The Joyful Mystery : . . Number 2 THE VISITATION The Virgin visits her cousin Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist. The pre- sanctified Baptist leaped in his mother’s womb at the approach of his Incarnate God. 6 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ROSARY S INCE Our Lord chose the Garden of Olives as a place for prayer, Christians have associ- ated prayer with the reflective quiet of a garden. Thus we see monasteries designed with a cloister garth or garden. The faithful have long asso- ciated the telling of Our Lady’s beads with the weaving of wreaths of roses from Mary’s garden. Hence the Latin word for rose-garland, rosarium^ has been accepted as the most descriptive term for the saying of the definite series of prayer decades (one Pater and ten Aves) accompanied by reflections on the five joyful, the five sorrowful and the five glorious mysteries of the lives of Jesus and Mary—which prayer we call the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In her apparitions to St. Bernadette at Lourdes the Blessed Mother of God appeared with golden roses ornamenting her feet, while at the opening of the grotto a single rosebush flowered. This adornment of Mary with golden roses, and the growing of the wild rosebush beside the miracu- lous spring of pure water, seem to be marks of approval of the devotion of the Holy Rosary. In telling his beads the rosarian may be likened to the rose grower who walks observantly along his garden paths and admires in turn each beautiful bloom. He thoughtfully picks and then carefully arranges each choice blossom, twining the thorny stems into a wreath which he places on the head of the Queen who is indeed the Help of Chris- tians, Our Lady of the Rosary. Although the complete Rosary consists of fifteen decades and 7 The Joyful Mystery . . . Number 3 THE NATIVITY The Word that from all eternity had proceeded from the Father is born a mortal Infant of a Virgin Mother. 8 mysteries, each five decades is called a chaplet or wreath. It is interesting to note that in the Rosary apparitions both at Lourdes, France, in 1858, and at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, Our Lady recited the usual five decades with the favored children of the Holy Spirit to whom she chose to appear. Rosarians, as children of their Mother, Mary, like to w'alk and speak with Christ in the beauti- ful pathways of Our Lady’s rose garden. In medi- tating on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary, our souls are kindled by the spiritual beauty which they reveal. Roses, pure white as springtime blossoms, remind us of the Child Christ and of His Mother, the most favored of all mothers. Here, too, in Mary’s lovely garden bloom red roses like the Redeemer’s Blood. Then again, the golden glow of yellow roses tells us of the Resur- rection of Christ and of the glories of Our Heav- enly Queen. The effect of the fresh roses lies in the power of their simple beauty to arouse us to love true and real loveliness. Thus meditation on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary inflames our soul to draw near to the personalities of Jesus and of Mary; holy comfort and thoughts of eternity will accompany us on life’s weary way if we thus use our spiritual rosary to keep us near to Jesus through Mary. “The Rosary,” then, is a form of prayer wherein we say fifteen decades of ten Hail Marys, each preceded by an Our Father, and during each of these fifteen decades we piously meditate in a mood of loving yearning upon one of the mys- teries of our Redemption. No Catholic custom is better suited to heal 9 The Joyful Mystery . . . Number 4 THE PRESENTATION OF THE CHILD JESUS The Child is presented in the Temple, the Lawgiver obeys the Law, here the Redeemer offers himself and is redeemed by the offering of the poor. 10 family troubles, to unite quarrelling partners, to instill love and obedience in the souls of children, to invoke health for the sick, to obtain rest for the souls in purgatory, than the recitation of five decades of Our Lady’s Rosary—especially in the intimacy of the family circle. This custom is asso- ciated with the family meal in the evening, which is usually the most convenient time to assemble the greatest number of members. Shortly after the evening table is left, the father or the mother simply says. Let us say the rosary. The Fifteen Saturdays devotion consists in re- ceiving Holy Communion on fifteen consecutive Saturdays (or Sundays) in commemoration of the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of honoring Jesus and Mary, and of obtaining through Mary’s intercession the grace of a happy death, and whatever other special favor we may desire. One should also pray for the Pope’s intentions, for the conversion of sinners, the propagation of the Faith, and for the souls in Purgatory. This devotion of fifteen Saturdays can be practised at any time during the year, either with the intention of obtaining some special favors, or as an act of thanksgiving, or from pure devotion, and when ended, may be begun again immedi- ately. It is often made as a preparation for the Festival of the Rosary, which falls on the 7th of October. If the external solemnity be celebrated on the first Sunday of October the indulgence will be gained on that day. Those who cannot conse- crate Saturday to our Blessed Lady may practise this devotion on Sunday and gain the same Indulgences. 11 The Joyful Mystery . . . Number 5 THE FINDING OF THE CHILD JESUS IN THE TEMPLE Now the joyful Mother finds her Son Whom she had already mourned as lost; finds Him ex- pounding to learned minds things they did not know. 12 ROSARY NOVENA PRAYERS Part Ose— F irst Thre^ Days (1) Opening Prayer* Open my mouth, O Lord, to bless Thy Holy Name; cleanse my heart from all vain and unholy thoughts; inspire my mind and inflame my will; that I may worthily, attentively, and devoutly recite Mar>'*s Beads, as a Psalter of homage to Thee; and in my Rosaiy' prayer, may I merit to be heard in the presence ofThy Majesty, through Christ Our Lord. Am/n. 0 Lord, in union with that di\dne intention, with which Thou didst praise and do the Will of God on earth, I oflFer this recitation of the Most Holy Rosar>*, for the wants of Our Holy Mother the Church, for all heretics, all sinners, all those severely tempted, for all the sick and all the d\dng, also for the wounded and the dGng of the war, and for the suffering Souls in Purgator>'. (The Rosar>* Xovena may be said privately or in church. If said in a church or chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved a plenary indulgence, applicable to the Souls in Purgator>'. may be obtained for each five decades recited. Added to this are the numerous Rosary Indulgences, plus the indulgences attached to each prayer separately.) This prayer precedes the recitation of the beads every day. But Holy Mother the Church has granted special indulgences to those who are willing to obligate themselves to the recitation of fifteen decades of the Holy Rosary within each week, by joining the Rosary Confraternity. To mention a few examples of the indulgences obtainable by Rosary Confraternity members we refer to: (a) The daily plenary indulgence and the plenary indulgence of the First Sundays, to be gained by fulfillment of the respective conditions laid down for each, and: (b) To the total of 299 years and 160 days obtainable by members for the recitation of five decades. The Crozier indulgences of 75 years and 125 days obtainable by all the faithful for the recitation of a third part of the Rosary and the Brigittine indulgences for like recitation amounting to 15 years and 25 days, may be gained by the one recitation of five decades, pro- vided the blessings for these three have been attached to one’s beads. (c) All members of the Rosary Confraternity assisting at the Rosary Altar votive Mass may gain the same indulgences that can be obtained 34 by the devout recitation of the fifteen decades of the Marian Rosary. Now that we may include the greatest of Rosary indulgences granted to all the faithful for the recitation of five decades before the Blessed Sacrament, given on the occasion of the Eucharistic Congress at Bologna (September 4, 1927), the celebrant and the faithful rosarians assisting at the Rosary Votive Mass enjoy the grant of three plenary indul- gences in addition to the munificent grants of the Holy See for the recitation of the fifteen decades of the Marian Rosary. Those \vishing to become special clients of Our Lady of The Rosary should v^rite to the Rosary Apostolate, 141 East 65th St., New York 21,N.Y. for a membership card of the Rosary Confraternity. 35 Printed in U.
