J§l]ori J$>tory of JSami ^ranrss 3£abter fllabrmt Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, was born July 15,1 850, at San Angelo Lodigiano, in the diocese of Lodi, Lombardy, Italy. Her parents, being pious, practical Catholics, reared their large family of thirteen children (little Frances being the last) , in the fear and iove of God. From early childhood, her rare virtues merited for her the praise and admiration of all. At her birth, a flight of white doves, never seen before, flitted above the roof of the Cabrini home. In later years, this was interpreted as a symbol of the . numerous Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, of whom Frances became their beloved Foundress and Mother. Although frail of body, she possessed strong sentiments and solid virtue, being trained to this by her mother and her elder sister Rose. She was daily nourished by desires for higher ideals of virtue, which inflamed her with zeal for God’s greatest glory. When only six years old, she felt an ardent longing to receive Jesus in Holy Communion. Frances sought no amusements in sports common to children, but spent her time in retirement, prayer and labor. She cherished an eager desire to become a Religious and Missionary, in order to bring the light of Christian faith to the infidel nations. In her youth, she dedicated herself to works of piety and charity; this she did in an heroic manner especially during an epidemic that raged in the town of Lodi. After obtaining with honor the teacher’s diploma, she taught in the public schools, always shedding brilliant examples of virtue. At home, she was an exemplary daughter, sister and teacher, so much so, that she was surnamed "the little saint.'* In fact, she was esteemed as a saintly maiden by all those who knew her. Ever burning with the ardent desire of serv- ing God as a Missionary, Providence so disposed that she was given the opportunity of directing some young ladies in the spiritual life. In 1880, she assembled them in a house at Codogno, and it was thus that the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was founded. In a few years, her small band of companions and daughters, of whom she was teacher and guide, had multiplied almost prodigiously. Under her leadership they were soon scattered through- out Europe and the two Americas. No place was too remote, no task too arduous for this intrepid apostle of Jesus Christ. Everywhere she founded schools, orphanages, academies, hospitals, dispen- saries, foundling homes, preventoriums, and other works of charity, of faith, of civilization and of Christian patriotism. Every misery, every grief, every misfortune — found in Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini — help, comfort and relief. Inflamed with heroic faith and charity, she crossed the ocean, traversed forests, climbed mountains, suffered, labored, and prayed all her life that faith might be diffused throughout the world, and the glory of God might be increased. The luminous, inextinguishable beacon-light that guided her always and everywhere; the standard that bound and infused her with indomitable courage and heroic strength; the furnace from whence she drew devouring flames of charity, zeal and of saintly heroism, was the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Well did the holy Pontiffs Leo XIII, Pious X. and Benedict XV, proclaim her the “True Apostle of the Gospel—Full of the Spirit of God — Woman of high ideals, and of great sanctity.” In truth wherever she went there radiated a luminous ray of Christian virtue—an order of ranctity. In obedience to the Pontiff Leo XIII, America was designated to be the particular field of her apostolate. So lovingly and indefatigably did she labor among the Italian immigrants that she was called “the saint of immigrants.” At sixty-seven years of age, rich with incom- parable merits before God, the Church and so- ciety, amidst the veneration and universal lament- ation of her innumerable daughters, of other per- sonages, of the clergy, of the Catholic laity and even of the non-Catholics, besides the thousands of poor whom she had benefited in Chicago on the 22nd of December, 1917, like a dove that flitted the earth only to benefit, bless, and con- sole, mantled with celestial candor, she flew to the embrace of her heavenly Spouse.
