Bishop of Fort Wayne Fort Wayne, Indiana, May, 1926 OUR SUMY VISITOR LIBRARY HUNTINGTON, INDIANA JVnt^ong of ^Jaiuta Next to the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph there is scarcely another Saint more universally honored than St. Anthony ofJPadua. “St. Anthony does not belong to the city of Padua alone, He is a Saint of the whole world.” Leo XIII. St. Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on the 15th of August, 1195. The name Ferdinand was given him in Baptism. At a ten- der age he began to manifest signs of great piety. His mother, a true Chris- tian woman, fostered in his heart de- votion to the Blessed Virgin and took special delight in teaching him to sing the beautiful hymn “0 Gloriosa Domina.” On her tombstone are en- graved these words “Here Lies The Mother of St. Anthony.” At the age of fifteen he entered the order of St. Augustine. In the year 1220 the re- mains of five Franciscans, who had died for the faith in Morocco, were brought to the convent of the Holy Cross in Combra, where Ferdinand was at that time. At the sight of the Holy Martyrs he felt an irresistible impulse to enter the order of the Franciscans. Having obtained the reluctant permission of his superior, he joined the Franciscans, changing his name Ferdinand to that of An- thony. After his novitiate the su- perior complied with his request, and sent him to the African Missions, where he expected to gain the crown of Martyrdom. Sickness, however, compelled him to return to Spain, but overtaken by a violent storm, he was cast on the shores of Sicily. For nearly a year he remained in solitude unknown to the world. When a short time afterwards, his superiors dis- covered the wonderful gifts which had been bestowed by God upon Anthony, St. Francis commanded him to devote his life, henceforth to the spread of the Gospel. He traversed the north of Italy, and the south of France, and almost invariably preached in the open fields, as the churches could not contain the immense throngs, that crowded to hear him. A year before his death, he returned to Padua. One day the Saint was granted an extra- ordinary blessing, the Divine Infant especially favoring Him with His em- braces; and He is therefore generally represented with the Infant Savior, on His arms. He died June 13, 1231. To know him, means to love him. He seems to have unlimited access to the Treasures of God’s Graces, and bountifully dispenses them, to all who are in need, be this need spiritual or temporal. The people love St. An- thony. Everywhere churches arise in — 3 — his honor, and shrines invite devotion to him. He is one of the few Saints, to whom Almighty God has entrusted a goodly share of His Power of work- ing Miracles. He is called the Won- der-Worker on account of the extra- ordinary gift of Miracles, by which God favored him in life, and after death, even to the present day. He is the restorer of lost things, both tem- poral and spiritual; he advances the temporal, and still more the Eternal interest of his clients. A confident prayer to St. Anthony usually brings results. St. Anthony became the glory of his- Order; he was called the Ark of the Covenant, by the Sovereign Pontiff, for his knowledge of Holy Scripture; Hammer of Heretics, for his apostolic zeal; and so famous for sanctity was he, that he was canonized less than a year after his death by Pope Gregory IX. ST ANTHONY, whom the Infant Jesus so much loved and honored, grant us what we ask of thee. ST. ANTHONY, powerful in word and work, grant us what we ask of thee. ST. ANTHONY, attentive to those — 4 — who invoke thee, grant us what we ask of thee. : : : : : *b : : : : : Prayer to St. Anthony for Peace of Mind St. Anthony, most dear and faithful servant of Christ, to whom God has granted such favors, that through thy intercession, lost temporal goods are recovered, pray for me, a sinner, that I may acquire, and preserve peace of mind, with light and knowledge to discern good from evil, and truth from error, so that being delivered from all evil, scruples, darkness, and uneasi- ness of mind and conscience, I may faithfully serve my God and Savior, who is worthy of all honor, and glory, with peace of mind, purity of con- science, and justice of life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ST. ANTHONY, beloved of God and Man, Pray for us. Another Prayer to St. Anthony St. Anthony thou Comforter of the afflicted, who hast through thy whole life, labored and endured so much for the honor of God, and even now dost not cease to pray for those, that call upon thee, I come, full of confidence, to thee, and recommend all my needs and distresses to thee, through thy powerful intercession. Thou Great — 5 — Saint of God, rescue me from all dan- gers, which menace my soul, that it may not perish for eternity; help me to be truly sorry for my sins, to con- trol my passions, to root out all my evil inclinations, especially this one . Pray for me, that I may be filled with a holy zeal for God’s honor, and thy hatred against sin, that I may imitate thy chaste, loving and humble heart; if it is for my good, obtain this temporal favor for me Bring consolation, rest and peace unto my soul which sighs under heavy tribulations, and cease not to be mind- ful of me at the throne of God, until together with thee, I will praise our Infinite, Kind and Merciful Father for all eternity. Amen. The Miraculous Responsory of St. Anthony of Padua If miracles thou fain would’st see; Lo! error, death, calamity, The leprous stain, the demon flies, From beds of pain the sick arise. The hungry seas forego their prey, The prisoner’s cruel chains give way: While palsied limbs and treasures lost Both young and old recovered boast. And perils perish, plenty’s hoard Is heaped on hunger’s famished board: -— 6 — Let those relate, who know it well, Let Padua of her Patron tell. The hungry seas, etc. To Father, Son, may glory be, And Holy Ghost, eternally. The hungry seas, etc. Pray for us, St. Anthony. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. : : : : : * : : : : : Let Us Pray O God! let the votive comrtiemora- tion of Blessed Anthony, Thy Confes- sor, be a source of joy to Thy Church, that she may always be fortified with spiritual assistance, and may deserve to possess eternal joy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 100 days indulgence every time. ; ; ; ; ; ^ ; ; An Act of Consecration to St. Anthony O glorious St. Anthony, servant and friend of God, I salute thee through the most loving Heart of our Divine Savior Jesus Christ, whom thou didst bear in thy pure arms under the form of a child. I choose thee today as my patron, advocate and father, I place all my cares, and temptations in thy hands. I earnestly resolve never to forsake thee. Great Saint, lily of celestial purity, and vanquisher of concupiscence, ob- tain for me and all thy other clients perfect purity of body and soul. I also, in imitation of thy zeal, promise to lead others to the knowl- edge, the love and the service of God through my own example and counsel. St. Anthony’s Prayer Against Evil Spirits Behold the Cross t of the Lord. Fly, ye enemies of our Salvation, The Lion of the Tribe of Juda, The Root of David hath conquered: Alleluia! Alleluia! Conclude the beads with the Respon- sory. Origin of the Novena of the Nine Tuesdays It was on Friday that St. Anthony of Padua died, but, on account of the numerous miracles that were perform- ed by touching his body, the burial — 8 — was delayed until the following Tues- day. On this day the wonders were greater and far more numerous than on any of the preceding days, there- fore, with love and gratitude for the favors that had been bestowed upon them, the people dedicated every Tues- day to him, as being the day God was pleased to show forth his power. This was strengthened by a re- markable occurrence which took place at Bologna in the year 1617. St. An- thony appeared to a noted lady of that city, who had besought him to obtain for her a certain favor, and said to her; “Visit my image in the church of St. Francis on Nine Tues- days and thou shalt be heard.” She followed faithfully the direction, which had been given to her by the Saint, and obtained her request. This apparition was made known by the Friars Minor of St. Francis, and the devotion of the Nine Tues- days was propagated by them in vari- ous countries. St. BonaVenture, a great Doctor of the Church, declares that all miracu- lous graces may be obtained through the intercession of St. Anthony of Padua, namely, for the restoration of lost or stolen things, the recovery of health in all kinds of sickness, and for a knowledge of the will of God in the choice of a vocation, or the suc- cess of an undertaking. It would be impossible to enumerate the many wonderful graces and bless- ings that God has showered down upon those who have performed this devotion with a true confidence in St. Anthony. Scarce any one can be found who, if he or she did not receive what was requested, has not received some spiritual favor far more pre- cious. The following indulgences are granted to those who perform the devotion of the Nine Tuesdays: 1. A plenary indulgence is granted to all the faithful who visit a Church in honor of St. Anthony on one of the Nine Tuesdays immediately preceding the feast of St. Anthony (June 13) and fulfill the usual conditions.—Pope Benedict XIV, May 7, 1751. 2. On any other Tuesday of the year an indulgence of seven years and seven quarantines. — Pope Benedict XIV, May 7, 1751. 3. A plenary indulgence each Tues- day to those who visit a church dur- ing the Exposition of the Most Ador- able Sacrament, and fulfill the re- quired conditions.—Pope Clement XIV, May 25, 1770. : : : : : * : : : : : How to Make the Novena of Nine Tuesdays Visit a church or an altar or a pic- ture of the Saint each Tuesday. — 1ft — Say your prayers there, in honor of the Saint. Go to confession and communion during the Novena. In the meantime, if your means allow it, make some offering in honor of the Saint for the intentions of the Novena. Be thankful when your prayers are heard and resigned if not, firmly be- lieving that God will give you some- thing better than what you asked for. Note.—Should you not like to make the Novena of Nine Tuesdays, then make it on nine continuous days like any other Novena, by saying your prayers in honor of St. Anthony for nine days at home or at some church. Prayers for the Novena of the Nine Tuesdays In Honor of St. Anthony of Padua PREPARATORY PRAYER In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. O Almighty and Eternal God! the en- tire world is filled with the praise of Thy faithful servant, Anthony, through Thy most adorable will; and the great and wondrous works which Thou hast accomplished through his instrumen- tality, are everywhere proclaimed. When Thy only son, Jesus, deigned to come down from heaven into his arms. Thou didst proclaim to all Thy special — 11 — delight in imparting Thy divine grace to .the world through Thy holy ser- vant. Hence we prostrate ourselves in Thy divine presence, and honor the image of this great saint. In a spirit of profound humility we adore Thee, and dare to lay our necessity before Thee, through him, confident that Thou wilt graciously hear our peti- tion, should it be conducive to the welfare of our souls. We confess that the number of our misdeeds renders us unworthy in Thy sight; but we re- pent with our whole heart of having ever offended Thee, the most high and adorable good, and we firmly resolve never more to outrage Thy infinite Majesty with the heart-felt hope that Thou wilt not permit repentant and contrite hearts to depart from Thy throne of grace unheard. But should we, on account of our daily failings, be still displeasing in Thy sight, and thus place a hindrance to the graces we hope for, we then turn to thee, 0 glorious and chosen servant of God, blessed St. Anthony! and beseech thee through the love of the sweet Infant Jesus, Whom thou didst bear in thy arms, and thy holy communings with Him, that thou wilt lend us the piety of thy heart and the power of thy blessed and incorruptible tongue during these devotions, so that, with thy holy heart and blessed incorruptible tongue, we may love — 12 — Jesus all the more ardently, praise God more zealously and through thee obtain our petition at the throne of grace. Amen. Pray for us, St. Anthony! That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. : : : : : * : : : : : Prayer for the First Tuesday 0 generous protector, St. Anthony! who through thy powerful interces- sion at the throne of God, hast even raised the dead to life, we fly to Thee for refuge, and, kneeling before thy altar, beseech thee that thou wilt awaken our souls, whicSh are dead through our many offenses from the death of mortal sin to the life of Divine grace, and preserve us therein so that when we leave this mortal life, we may enter into the joys of eternal life. Amen. The Responsoi-y of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary. : : : : : : : : : : Prayer for the Second Tuesday O zealous apostle, St. Anthony! thou who enlightenst those who walk blindly among the mazes of error, we humbly remind thee of that seraphic zeal for souls, which continually burned in thy heart, so that thou wast ever ready to endure every conceiv- able pain in order to lead back the erring to the path of the true faith, and we beseech thee, through this zeal — 13 — which is so pleasing to God, and through thy consuming desire to extir- pate all error from Christendom, to guide our poor souls from the erring path of sin to the way of God’s com- mandments and true virtue, so that we may not wander from the path that leads to true happiness. Amen. The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary. Prayer for the Third Tuesday 0 blessed St. Anthony! compas- sionate comforter! thou dost help all Christians who sigh to thee, in their sorrow and distress. Wherefore we come to thee in our misery and afflic- tion with childish confidence in thee, and with afflicted hearts, reveal to thee our deep misery, and humbly be- seech thee that thou wilt lay it before the throne of God, and earnestly pray for our speedy relief. We are not in- deed, worthy of thy assistance as we have so often and so grievously of- fended God, but we nevertheless hope in the goodness which thou hast shown to so many afflicted hearts, and trust that thou wilt not deny thy fatherly aid to us, thy unworthy chil- dren, but that thou wilt continue to pray for us at the throne of grace, till we, like so many others, are freed from all misery and affliction. Amen, The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary. — 14 — Prayer for the Fourth Tuesday O St. Anthony! invincible con- queror of the evil spirit, thou knowest and we feel, alas! how persistently the evil one seeks to ensnare our souls, and how he goes around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Hence our poor souls are in perpetual danger of being lost through his evil cunning. But as God hath graciously vouchsafed to thee on ac- count of thy great merits such power over the evil spirit, we earnestly im- plore thee to preserve us against these numerous and dangerous snares of the enemy, so that we may not yield to them, but, through thy inter- cession, escape his deceit and wiles, and avoid the punishment of hell and be made sharers in eternal happiness. Amen. The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary. Prayer for the Fifth Tuesday Blessed St. Anthony! heavenly physician of body and soul, how many hast thou miraculously restored to the health they desired! When all human aid was powerless in bodily sickness thou hast lent thy aid and listened to the petitions of the afflicted. Hence we, too, hope for comfort and freedom from our bodily afflictions, well knowing that thou canst and wilt help — 15 — us; for thou art now in heaven a powerful intercessor with Christ, who will lay our necessity before the throne of God and who can and will obtain for us the request we seek. But should this request not be in ac- cordance with the will of God or be against the welfare of our souls we do not desire it, but we beg and hope that thou wilt obtain for us from God another grace that may be more con- ducive to our eternal salvation. Amen. The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary . Prayer for the Sixth Tuesday Blessed St. Anthony! thou hast gloriously stilled the raging sea, and miraculously rescued captives from their chains. Numbers of men have been in imminent danger of being swallowed up by the sea, or were con- demned to a shameful death, when having placed their hope or safety in thee, they were rescued from their dangers, to praise thy name ever after before the world, and unceasing- ly thank God for their deliverance. We are not, indeed, placed in like dan- gers; still we invoke thy aid, O blessed Saint, as the world is a stormy and dangerous sea, where we are every moment liable to suffer shipwreck of soul, where there are many sins, chains and bands wherewith the evil — 16 — spirit binds our souls. Come then to our aid and abandon us not. Rescue us from every danger, and place us in the freedom of the children of God, so that in this world, we may praise thy glorious power and praise God for- ever in the next. Amen. The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary . Prayer for the Seventh Tuesday 0 generous friend of God, blessed St. Anthony, thou who has restored sight to numbers of the blind who sought thy assistance, hearing to the deaf and the use of their limbs to the halt and lame, behold, we are wholly blind of soul, and realize the hateful- ness of sin; we are deaf and hear not the word of God and His eternal truths, we are lame and walk not in the path of virtue. In these most dangerous of maladies, we lift our eyes to thee in heaven, and beseech thee to teach us to recognize the hate- fulness of our sins! to enable us to walk steadfastly in the path of virtue, to obtain the perfection conformable to our state in life, and finally to at- tain eternal happiness. Amen. The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary . Prayer for the Eighth Tuesday Faithful servant of God, blessed St. NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. DYMFHNA Sept. 7 to Sept. 15 (She Is patron of those af- flicted with nervous or men- tal illness. 0 God, who gave St. Dymphna to Thy Infant Church in Bra- bant as a perfect model of virtue and dlds't deign that Thy servant seal with her innocent blood and with num- erous miracles the teachings of the Holy Gospels so that ^ the true religion might spread more rapidly, we be- seech Thee that Thou woulds’t grant especially to those who honor her rellques. Thy Protection, so that being fortified in the true faith and gratefully imitating all her virtues we may render greater glory to Thy supreme and Infinite Majesty, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen — 17 — Anthony! how great, how powerful art thou in the sight of God! As thou hast restored through thy pow- erful intercession, to many persons their lost gold and treasure, honor, office and dignity, so do we fly to thee for refuge, O great and powerful in- tercessor, and humbly implore thee to listen to all afflicted souls that invoke thee in their necessity, and to grant that we may find grace, and preserve it carefully till death. Amen. The Responsory of St. Anthony: One Our Father and One Hail Mary . Prayer for the Ninth Tuesday 0 powerful father and protector in all necessities, St. Anthony! thou knowest and seest that the world, the flesh and the devil fill the life of man with dangerous pitfalls, and so beset him on his pilgrimage that even the just man is liable to fall seven times a day. Sighing over this unhappy lot we bow before thy holy image, and beseech thee to deign to be not only our protector amid so many dangers of body and soul, but our guide also, so that we may escape the cunning snares of the evil one, and finally, under thy holy guidance, arrive where we shall no longer fear danger, but rejoice in eternal happiness.
