Washington, D.C. 20005 All rights reserved. Introduction This calendar is based upon the General Roman Calendar promulgated by Pope Paul VI on February 14, 1969. It has been adapted to the use of the dioceses of the United States (a) by the addition of celebrations observed throughout the country and (b) by following the directions for the transfer of holy days of obligation not observed in the United States (Epiphany and Corpus Christi). For the significance of the several grades or kinds of celebrations, the norms of the Roman Calendar should be consulted (English translation: Washington, D.C. 1970). For information concerning the choice of texts and formularies, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the Introduction to the Lectionary for Mass, incorporated in the respective liturgical books, should be consulted. 1984 First Sunday of Advent Ash Wednesday Easter Ascension Pentecost Corpus Christi First Sunday of Advent November 27, 1983 March 7, 1984 April 22, 1984 May 31, 1984 June 10, 1984 June 24, 1984 December 2, 1984 Lectionary Sunday Cycle Year A November 27, 1983 to November 25, 1984 Weekday Cycle Year II November 28, 1983 to December 1, 1984 Sunday Cycle Year B December 2, 1984 to November 26, I9S5 The cycles given above have been used in the preparation of this calendar. The Proper has been used for all Solemnities and all feasts. For those Memorials and Optional Memorials that have complete readings in the Proper, both the readings from the Proper and the regular readings have been given. The readings for Vigil Masses have been included for this calendar year. For this reason, the months of November and December 1983 have been included in this booklet. Special Notes 1 . The Gloria is used on: Solemnities Feasts Sundays outside of Advent and Lent Solemn local celebrations The Profession of Faith is used on: Solemnities Sundays Solemn local celebrations (optional) 2. For clarity the optional memorials have been placed in a separate column. 3 . References to the Scripture Readings In this liturgical calendar the references to the daily readings from scripture have been added. For Sundays, solemnities and feasts, the exact text references are given. For memorials and optional memorials only the references to the semi-continuous readings are given except for the few memorials that have assigned readings (e.g., memorial of Mary Mag- dalene). On those days when a memorial is celebrated, scriptural selec- tions might be made from the common of the Saints. Generally, however, it is preferable to use the semi-continuous readings from the book as- signed in the weekday lectionary to that particular liturgical season (See Lectionary for Mass, no. 8e). The references to the Liturgy of the Word will be an aid for those who study and pray over the scriptural passages before the celebration. Al- though the numbers in the parentheses refer to the text in the revised lectionary, the Bible may be used when a lectionary is not available. 4. Interrupting the Continuous Weekday Readings It is important to determine in advance whether any interruption of the continuous reading will occur in the course of the weekday reading. “The priest, considering the entire week’s readings, may omit less important sections from the weekday lectionary or combine them with other read- ings when this will give a unified presentation of a specific theme” (Lectionary for Mass, no. 8d). Sometimes, the text replaced by the assigned reading for a solemnity, feast, or obligatory memorial, must be combined with the reading on the day before or after if the sense of the continuous reading is to be maintained.
