DIEV· ET· MON· DROIT HONI ❀ SOIT ❀ QVI ❀ MAL ❀ Y ❀ PENSE ❀ royal blazon or coat of arms ¶ By the King. ¶ A proclamation concerning the Trade of Guinea, and Binney, in the parts of Africa. WHereas Our late dear and Royal Father, King james (of ever blessed and happy memory) for the due establishing of an orderly Traffic and Trade of Merchandise unto Guinea, Binney, and Angola in the parts of Africa, did by His Letters Patents under the great Seal of England, incorporate diverse of his loving Subjects both Merchants and others, and did thereby grant unto them diverse Powers, Licences, Privileges and Authorities in the said Letters Patents mentioned; which Letters Patents We have for diverse consideratious and causes Us moving, caused in a Legal manner and way by judgement, to be called in, and made void, and which are since by Us resumed, determined, repeated and made void. And to the end the said Trade and Traffic much importing the good of Our service, and the enriching of this Our Kingdom of England, should not be let fall, and left off, We have by Our Letters Patents under Our great Seal of England, bearing date the 25. day of june last passed, given and granted unto Our well-beloved servants and Subjects Sir Richard Young Knight and Baronet, Sir Kenelm Digby Knight, George Kirke Esquire, Humphrey Slany, Nicholas Crispe, and William Cloberie of London Merchants, their Executors, Admnistrators and Assigns, the sole Trade and Traffic to Guinea, Binney, and Angola, and all Ports, Havens, and Creeks thereunto belonging, in the parts of Africa, for the term of one and thirty years, from the date of Our said Letters Patents next ensuing, as in and by the said Letters Patents amongst diverse Powers, Prohibitions, and Authorities therein contained, more at large it doth and may appear. Now to the end, none of Our loving Subjects may pretend ignorance of Our Royal Pleasure in that behalf, but that what We have prohibited, commanded, and forbidden by Our said Letters Patents, may be fully known and published, and accordingly observed and obeyed. We do therefore hereby straightly charge, inhibit, and forbid all and every Our Subjects, of what degree, or quality soever they be, that none of them directly, or indirectly, during the said term of one and thirty years, presume to visit, frequent, trade, or adventure to traffic into, or from the Lands, Dominions, and places aforesaid, or any of them. And we do also hereby, further straightly Charge, inhibit, prohibit, and forbid aswell all and every Our Subjects as aforesaid, as all and every the Subjects of any foreign Prince, State, or Potentate whatsoever, to import or bring in, any Redwood, Elephants-teeths, Hides, Wax, Gums, or Grains of those Country's, or any part thereof, or any other of the Commodities of those Country's, from any place, or places whatsoever, into any of Our Kingdoms, or Dominions (other than the said Sir Richard Young, Sir Kenelm Digby, George Kirke, Humphrey Slany, Nicholas Crispe, and William Clobery, their Executors, Administrators, Assigns, Deputies, Factors, and Servants) upon pain of Our high displeasure, and the forfeiture and loss, both of those goods, and of the Ships which shall import the same, wheresoever they shall be found. And we do also hereby charge, prohibit, inhibit, and forbid all and every the Factors, Masters of Ships, Mariners & Agents of them the said Sir Richard Young, Sir Kenelm Digby, George Kirke, Humphrey Slany, Nicholas Crispe, and William Clobery, and of every of them, and of the Executors, Aministrators and Assigns of them and every of them, That none of them directly or indirectly during the term aforesaid, presume to Trade, Adventure, or Traffic for themselves, or any of them, or for any other person or persons whatsoever, (other than the said last Patentees, into, or from the Lands, Dominions and places aforesaid, or in any of them, upon pain of Our high indignation displeasure, and forfeiture of all such Goods, and upon such other punishments, as can or may by Law be inflicted upon the offenders, for contempt of Our Royal pleasure and command in this behalf. And to the end Our commands herein may be the better performed, observed and kept, we do hereby straight charge and command, All Our Admirals, Viceadmirals, and all other Our Officers and Ministers of the Admiralty, and such as have Admiral jurisdiction; And all Majors, Portreeves, justices of Peace, Sheriffs, Bailiffs, Constables, Customers, Comptrollers, Collectors, waiters, Searchers, Surveyors, and all other Our Officers, and Ministers whatsoever to be from time to time in all things helping, aiding and assisting, and as much as in them or any of them whom it shall or may concern lieth, to see Our pleasure herein to be kept, observed and performed, as they tender Our pleasure, and will answer the contrary at their perils, and upon pain of Our heavy displeasure, and the loss of their and every of their places.
