Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., president emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, will participate in a forum titledIntercollegiate Athletics: Their Role, Their Status, Their Futureat 11 a.m. Feb. 9 (Friday) at the University of Virginia. Hosted by the Miller Center of Public Affairs, the event will be cybercast live over the World Wide Web. The Webcast, originating from the universitysCharlottesvillecampus, will be available both live and in archive at http://www.millercenter.org/ . Joining Father Malloy on the panel will be Robert C. Khayat, chancellor of theUniversityofMississippiand a former football player for the Washington Redskins. The forum will examine the importance of intercollegiate athletics in fundraising and as part of an overall college curriculum. Recent concerns surrounding coaching salaries, behavior scandals and the academic concerns of student-athletes have brought increased scrutiny to college athletic departments and their respective universities. Father Malloy is a professor of theology at Notre Dame and served from 1987 to 2005 as the 16th president of the University. He earned bachelors and masters degrees at Notre Dame and his doctorate in Christian ethics fromVanderbiltUniversity. Father Malloy currently chairs the National Commission on Substance Abuse and Sports for theNationalCenteron Addiction and Substance Abuse atColumbiaUniversityand recently served as president of the Sports Wagering Task Force established by the NCAA.
