The Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame will administer a new student award established in honor of Rev. John Considine, M.M., a Maryknoll missioner who made pioneering contributions to improve relations between the U.S. Catholic Church and the Catholic Church in Latin America.
The Rev. John Considine, M.M., Award for Outstanding Student Contributions to the Study of, or Service to, the Catholic Church in Latin America will be presented to a graduating senior at Notre Dame in recognition of service activities, academic performance and a demonstrated interest in religious issues and/or service in Latin America.
Father Considine was the first director of the Latin America Bureau of the U.S. Bishops, which was formed in 1961. “The creative leadership of Father Considine was the single most positive contribution to inter-American Church relations in the 20th century,” said Rev. Robert Pelton, C.S.C., director of Latin American/North American Church Concerns at the Kellogg Institute.
Funded by a grant from the Secretariat for the Church in Latin America of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the honor, which will be bestowed during Commencement each year, will include a $500 cash award.
