Michael Ashburner, professor of biology at the University of Cambridge and former joint-head of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), will be the featured speaker Thursday and Friday (Sept. 16 and 17) for the annual Nieuwland Lectures in Biology at the University of Notre Dame.p. Ashburners research interests lie in the structure and evolution of genomes. Most of his research has been with the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, about which he has written the standard research text, “Drosophila: A Laboratory Handbook.” He was a member of the consortium that sequenced the entire genome of this fly.p. Ashburners opening lecture, “The Natural History of Fly Genomes,” will be presented at 4 p.m. Thursday in Room 283 of the Galvin Life Sciences Center.p. His second lecture, “Ontologies for Biologists— Coping with the Data Deluge,” is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, also in 283 Galvin.p. Both lectures are free and open to the public.p.
