Elaine Fuchs, Rebecca C. Lancefield Professor at Rockefeller University in New York City and an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will be the featured speaker Monday and Tuesday (April 2 and 3) for the annual Nieuwland Lectures in Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame.
Fuchs is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the ability of multipotent skin cells to produce the skins epidermis and its appendages. She utilizes mammalian epithelial stem cell culture and mouse genetics as model systems. Her studies bridge an understanding of the normal biology of skin stem cells with an understanding of how these processes go awry in human diseases of the skin, including genetic diseases, skin cancers and proinflammatory disorders.
Fuchsopening lecture,Stem Cells of the Skin and Their Lineages, will be presented at4 p.m.Monday in Room 283 of the Galvin Life Sciences Building.
Her second lecture,Stem Cells: Biology and Clinical Promise,is scheduled for12:30 p.m.Tuesday in Room 101 of the Jordan Hall of Science.
Tuesday’slectureis free and open to the public.
