Celebrating Notre Dame,by Kerry Temple, editor of Notre Dame Magazine, and Matt Cashore, University photographer, was published this month by Corby Books.
The lavishly colorful 120-page book includes Cashores photographs of Notre Dames campus landscape, interiors and people in varied seasons, lights, and moods as well as a contemplative essay in which Temple uniquely interweaves natural description, spiritual longing, autobiography and local history.
In his introduction to the new book, Notre Dames president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., praised the collaboration for its capacity to evokeenergizing times of conversation and contemplation.
Celebration, which means to gather in order to honor,is a good word for the contrarian way in which Notre Dame approaches photographs or other images of life,Father Jenkins wrote.These are scenes, settings and sensations that reflect important meanings and priceless joys.Our radar picks up the presence of a memory and the possibilities of a moment.
A native of Shreveport, La., Temple, a 1974 Notre Dame alumnus, earned a masters degree in journalism at Louisiana State University before returning to work at Notre Dame in 1978.He joined the staff of Notre Dame Magazine in 1981 and has served as its editor since 1995.The recipient of numerous national writing awards, he is the author ofBack to Earth:A Backpackers Journey into Self and Soul.
Cashore, a 1994 Notre Dame alumnus, worked for Notre Dame Magazine while still a student.After graduation, he worked at WNDU as television photojournalist and for the University as a freelancer.His work has been featured in several national publications including USA Today and Sports Illustrated.He joined the Notre Dame staff in June.
