Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin, Ireland, will speak on social solidarity Friday (April 18) at 7:30 pm in the University of Notre Dames Washington Hall.
Archbishop Martins lecture,Solidarity: Past, Present, Future: Reflections On Social Concern,is one of several events celebrating the 25th anniversary of Notre Dames Center for Social Concerns.
The former secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Archbishop Martin was appointed Archbishop of Dublin in 2003.Prior to that appointment, he represented the Vatican at the major United Nations international conferences on social questions in the 1990s. He also took part in activities of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, especially those concerning international debt and poverty reduction.
Earlier on Friday, at 2 p.m. in the LaFortune Student Center ballroom, Notre Dame alumni and students will attendStories of Faith and Service.
A groundbreaking ceremony for Geddes Hall, the new building for the Institute for Church Life and the Center for Social Concerns, will be held Saturday (April 19) at 9 a.m.at the construction site on the west side of Notre Dames Hesburgh Library.
A special Mass marking the 25th anniversary will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in Notre Dames Basilica of the Sacred Heart.Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dames president, and Archbishop Martin will be concelebrants.
The Center for Social Concerns, founded in 1983, is commited to Notre Dames mission to be a place wherelearning becomes service to justice.The Center is the community-based learning and research center of the University. Since its founding it has become one of the top community-based learning and research programs in higher education. Nearly half of all Notre Dame students participate in its community-based learning or research courses while at Notre Dame, and more than 85 percent of all Notre Dame undergraduates become engaged in some form of service before graduation.
