Supporting a loved one through the aging journey can present challenges for family members assisting their aging loved one, as well as for the seniors themselves.
A conference titled “Walking Alongside: A Navigation Conference for Family Caregivers,” scheduled for Aug. 12 and 13 (Friday and Saturday) at the University of Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture, will give caregivers an opportunity to join elder care professionals in the community for conversation, support and resource sharing with a focus on aging-in-place.
Presentations include “How Stress Gets Under the Skin: Implications for Health & Well-Being” from Cindy S. Bergeman, professor of psychology, Notre Dame; “Personal Stories of a Family Caregiver” from Bertha King, consultant, Car-King & Associates; “Overview of the PACE Programs” from Kathleen Murphy, director of marketing, Saint Joseph PACE-Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly; and “Substitute Decision Making Assessments in Guardianship and Power of Attorney” from Michael Jenuwine, clinical professor of law and concurrent associate professor of psychology, Notre Dame Law School.
Other presenters include Judith L. Fox, clinical professor of law, Notre Dame Law School; Robin Vida, director of health education, St. Joseph County Health Department; Sondra Gardetto, manager, St. Joseph Health System-Health Insurance Services; Barb Dzikowski, program manager at Alzheimer’s & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana; Julie Olson-Tobias, director of client services, Real Services Inc.; and Amy Tribbett, director of marketing and access, Center for Hospice Care.
Participants can register at artsandculture.nd.edu/community-relations. There is no cost for attendance, but a box lunch provided on Aug. 13 will cost $5.
