The Holy Ghost is a magical realist novel set in a world where the Christian God exists, one thousand years after the return of Jesus. It begins in an anarchist village in the mountains. A young boy's mother dies after being possessed by a demon—and, traumatized, the family leaves the village for the Holy City of Jerusalem: a place where, once every ten years, someone is sent to see God. Along the way, the novel is a very serious exploration of the nature of goodness, knowledge, and belief in a strange, surreal world where human society and history are unrecognizable; prophets read the words of Holy Books embedded somewhere in their chest; and the stars are holes in the sky, letting the light of heaven shine through.
